Derek C reacted to JOUFF in La Créole 1827 by archjofo - Scale 1/48 - French corvette
Hello Johann!
Congratulations for this very beautiful work : I look with great interest your way of proceeding, it is very inspiring.
I have a little question. I saw that you have an "Emco-Unimat" and I think I have the same, inherited from my father who bought it in Freiburg im Breisgau in ... 1962, when we lived there :
Today it is mine, in perfect working order and I saw that it could be used as a saw too. Is this your case and if so, could you put me some pictures in this configuration and tell me what are the necessary accessories?
Thank you in advance.

Derek C reacted to Tom E in US Brig Niagara by Tom E - Model Shipways - 1:64 Scale
Evening,
Thought I would share an update.
Did some little things over the course of the work week.
I figure since the overall skeleton of the hull is up I would start the fairing. The way I fair is slow and deliberate and will take me a few weeks.
The fairing wont "officially" wrap up until the planking is done and sanded into its final shape.
So far, I've only found one shim needed for the inside of the bulkheads.
While fairing the hull, I was sick of looking at this brown shell of a ship and decided it needed a little color.
Don't know why, could be out of order in a ships build, but the goblins in my head told me to go ahead and get a layer or primer on the planksheer/waterway.
Then proceeded to put the first coat of bulwarks/gun carriage red down.
Yes, I'm using the Model Expo paint set.
I realize that almost most of this will be sanded down, covered with wood filler and the like.
Since most painting is done in several coats, might as well start now. Areas may form where access will get tougher and tougher as the ship fills in.
Seeing some color down is a milestone in the build in my book.
Feels good, feels like progress!!!!

I have started replacing the rigging and got the main sail up slow and steady
She is coming together nicely I think . I enjoyed building the longboat kit I purchased from model Shipway and it was a challenge , that being said ... building it from scratch was very challenging and a bit of a test to see if I could actually build a boat from scratch before I moved on to something bigger. Doing this longboat has giving me the confidence that I might be able to build my next project the Triton Cross Section.

So I know I was planning on getting back to work on S.R. now that vacation is over but the past few days I have been distracted as my inner child got to play with his favorite toy. While on vacation I picked up the Lego Disney Cinderella's Castle. It is built with 4,080 pieces, stands 29 inches tall and 19 inches wide. Comes with 5 characters; Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Tinkerbell and has an amazing collection of details from several Disney movies. As both the Admiral and myself are huge Disney fans this was a great addition to our collection. It took me 14 hours to build so that is what happened to my ship yard time since Saturday.
Now I can get back to work on ship modeling as I shouldn't have any more distractions!!

Below are the process photos of the floorboard installation. Shaping the planks was accomplished first. I traced a cap to create the rounded shape at the bow. Next step was to install the middle plank. After this dried, the next two outer planks were glued. Finally, the last two planks were installed. Wipe-on-Poly was applied the following day. Five non-consecutive days to complete this process.
After applying the finish I noticed a plank was a bit loose. This will be fastened before the next steps.

It's looking really nice Steve. My longboat planking instill giving me fits. I made tick strips and layed out one plank and glued it in but ended up ripping it out because there was a gap at the rabbit on the bow. I wish I had used the tick strips from the begining. Your boat is an inspiration.

Bulkhead centers were removed with the needle file shown below. The process went smoothly. Inboard fairing is moving along. We're just about 1/16" thickness all around. I'd like to get it closer to 1/32". I'm back and forth between sandpaper and my rotary tool with a sanding disk attachment.

One method I've used a lot for edge-bending planks is to cut a scrap piece into a gentle curve, around which I can bend the plank. I find that it helps to have a solid curve to press up against, it lessens the potential for the plank to buckle or form a sharp curve in one place. This form doesn't have to be true to the final curve, just something roughly similar. I clamp it down first and then bend the plank around it. This is roughly what you're already doing in bending the second plank around the garboard, just more standardized since you won't be able to do that every time.
From what I can tell, you've definitely got the right idea and it's looking good.

Fitting the first garboard stake went pretty well. It sure is a challange. There is a lot of trial and error in bending and twisting the wood to conform to the hull. The edge bending was not as bad as I thought it would be and the second one went easier than the first. At this point I have both garboard strakes and one up from the garboard strake on the port side. I don't have pictures of that because it's covered in clamps and I just had enough for the day.

Welcome to MSW! I will agree with the sentiments of it being a smart move to start of with something simpler and smaller. Take your time on the build, be sure to read ahead in the instructions and plan sheets and don't be afraid of asking a "dumb" question. Most of all, have fun! Best of luck to you on your first build!

Hello everybody, I will start to introduce myself although I have been on this forum for some time. I live in the city of Braila on the Danube at 150 km from the Black Sea, my grandfather was a sailor, my father captain, my cousin is a heller, my brother is a mechanic on the ship, and myself a mechanic and a sailor on a river ship. I am passionate about building ships since I was in gymnasium and until now I am a member of Galati University Club and participate national and international competitions. My works are on the Romanian shipmodels forums.

Thanks Cathead. I think you have a great idea. This kit is a great lesson in planking for sure.

Finally finished framing the gunports and sweep ports, took a lot longer than expected, just a little final sanding left, broke the frames several times where the bulkheads were .cut and had to rebuild.
