Derek C got a reaction from IgorSky in 18th century longboat by Derek C - FINISHED - from Model Shipways plans
Hello fellow MSW members
i haven’t posted in a week , not because I haven’t been working in the shipyard but because what I was working on was kicking my butt !So I thought I’d give a update .I have finished the rigging and started on the sails and I quickly found out that my sewing is the most horrid thing I had ever laid eyes on ! I have posted pictures of what I’m happy with after six or seven attempts . I still have plenty opportunity to screw these up as I still want to add a black seam of thread around the sails and make the anchoring points . I plan on attempting this process today after I apply a coat of clear to the boat I will begin my sewing nightmare again lol

Evening,
An afternoon in the Shipyard, because the chores are done early, a fresh hot cup of tea, and playoff baseball on the TV.
Could it get any better?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Well, I suppose if the Red Sox had won, then yes it would be better. But as we say...."There's always next year!
Time for a Niagara update.
Finished the port side planksheer. Plenty of length, adjusted at the stern and fit nicely.
Alignment is good. Plenty to work with here.
Time to start sanding, and filling the gaps at the bulkheads.
Similar to the waterways, the planksheer needed some adjustment at the stern, and they fit easily.
All gun port holes align well as compared to the plans.
The Yard Boss, Gordon, likes the look of these.
Just looks at me and says "start sanding".
He's a hard drivin moose! Keeps a tight Shipyard.

Evening,
Made a bit of progress. Finished the waterway, then a good overall sanding.
Moved onto the planksheer. I liked the cut of these pieces, they easily came out and clean up easily.
I decided, unlike the waterway, to install these one piece at a time, feeding off the lay of the previous piece.
Started on the starboard side.
The end of the planksheer was worked over a bit and fit nicely.
A nice smooth run with well aligned gun port areas.
Fill have to fill some open areas around the bulkhead frames.
Let this set up for a bit.
I'll tackle the port side sometime this week.
That "work" thing we have to do keeps getting in the way of my build!?!?!?
The infamous gap has appeared between the edge of my planksheer and the edge of the bulkhead frames.
Not much, but enough to add to the "to do" list.
I have plenty of scrap to fill these in. They all need it.

Thanks for the kind words Darrell!
I'll be installing the extra bow and stern filler blocks soon.
I think I'm getting tomorrow off from work, and should be a good day to get that done.

I was looking on line for some ideas for a small tool box with several flat drawers for storing small tools like knives and pliers. Ran across this neat item from an art supply company called Display2Go. I have no association with this company or anyone in it, just passing along a good idea.
15.75x9.75 inches outside dimensions. Price is around $12 + shipping. I was thinking of getting one or two to keep my most used tools in on my workbench.

I made the rudder today, I used a spare I had from the kit version of this boat as a template I started by tracing the template then sanding and filing until I got it to match
Then I mounted the rudder and got the stays rigged
next I will rig the boom and gaff and start to mock up the sails. I have read that there are a couple different rigging plans for the sails One for a short gaff and one for the gaff in the plans I used for this build. I will do a bit more research on this before I commit to either way.not that I have kept the build period correct using the colored rigging on the stays.

Hi all,
I've completed the Bowsprit Guys. The thimbles are made from Albion Alloys thin walled brass tubing, 1.6mm.
The guys are .025" rope served with #100 thread.
As you can tell photography is not my strong suit. Need to work on it more!
Next up is setting the mast and hanging the boom and gaff.

Working on the spars. I sanded the yards by hand to the plan specifications. I think the main yards might need to be reworked with a bit more tapering on the ends. They are the indicated width on the plans though. I mixed a stain similar to the masts, then tried to present a bit of a weathered effect. I figured a merchant brig would not have the budget for regular painting like a warship, but would still be serviceable.

I felt the brig was crying for an old fashioned stern lantern . I ordered it through Bluejacket. They have a very extensive fittings catalog as well. Nic was great in getting the right "period" lantern selected. I referred to Angus Konstam's "The Pirate Ship 1660-1730" for shaping and placement. I specifically looked at the color plates of Charles Vane's Ranger and Queen Anne's Revenge.

Thanks Rick. Part of the appeal of the Pirate Brig was the fact I did not have to follow a historic example. It allows for a lot of creativity. I have been thinking about giving a plank on bulkhead kit a try.
