canoe21 reacted to Mirabell61 in SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse 1897 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:144 - POF - first German four stacker of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line
    Update....

little cabin structure beneath the bridge, and preliminary set up to try position of the first stb. boat (dummy boats cradle only),
There is still so much to do...
as mentioned earlier in this log, some of the upper structures will be of wood, as for the actual ship way back in 1897.
I still did`nt get the ordered "stack- brass tubes", so I chose an alternative material, now its aluminium tube with slightly thicker wall thickness, found at Ebay- Austria, but that should do as well. Expecting this by end this week.

    Nils

the structure is only 16,5 mm high. Could be that this is the captain`s quarters...

the crew figurine is "railroad N gauge"  scale 1:160

it must have been about nearly 1000 or more "caulked"  planks to lay over all decks, and still not finished.....

trust that the boats will go on last, when all the upper structures and the four stacks are done

    Update :

funnel sockets and some vent enbeddings on the upper deck, also doing a bending template for one of the upper platforms (with waste 8 mm copper stripe), before bending the rather fragile and  expensive etched railing material...
The vent tubes still have to be cut to length at a later time

    Nils

here the first raw funnel socket comprising the short center dowel, with 10 ° backward rake, (the hole made with the hole-saw tool as introduced before)
The structures are made from 7-layer water tight ply.
The socket design worked out exactly  as it was intended to be

the bottom funnel-end will be shifted appr. 12mm into the foreseen close-fit socket

the centering dowel sits rock tight (glued) in the structure plate

these are two of the four largest vents on the ship, bringing required amount of air down to the boiler furnaces.
Member, Bill of Idaho, will probably have noticed that here the "Brad-Point drills" have come in the game  for making the clean cut vent-tube holes.

here the wooden layers can be seen quite well in unpainted condition....

this is a bending template for the railing of one of the upper platforms, before bending and glueing on the etched railing

    Hi Denis, Bob and Peter,
    for your kind comments....

    Denis,
I also like those gratings, found them the other day at a web shop, they are made from 1 mm thick hard card, and can be easy cut with a scalpel

    Bob,
thats a nice word, I also love rather the nostalgic liners....

    Peter,
thanks for looking in again, its been quite some time......
you`re so right with the poor deck-hands who had to set the vents to position. Those large vents of the KWdG were so heavy that that would not have been possible without gear device, also an access-ladder for greasing the gear...., have a look at the pic I thankfully received from one of member Mr. Holloms posts(showing KWdG vent- gear), but I do`nt know if that was common for ships of that era, to turn the scoop per gear shaft and crank handle on deck level ( too difficult to model detail wise in this case)
You may have noted, that here also some of the vents are turned to exhaust position...

    UPDATE

made some structures and 24 windows, and the first two funnel (raw) sections. The appropriate vents still have to be placed, as well as the quater for the first officer.

    Nils

a little paint and gratings on the middle upper structures. The sockets are ready to take up the funnel tubes with 10° backward rake

dry fit of the first two funnels

diagonal its possible to get the total overview on the pic

    Update

I`m asking myself if I am right in bringing in all these vents. Appr. the same amount as just placed in the area of the first two funnels will go into the area of 3rd and 4th funnel as well. Cross-checking over again many times with the overview drawing. confirms the number of vents and their individual sizes.......
I remember when I once researched the differences in detail for the Cunard twins "Mauretania" and "Lusitania" (as potential scratch build model), it was only the "Mauritania" that was comprising the traditional forest of vents, her "sister" had a different vent design

    Nils

in this area all vents are in place now

here one of the raw boats with dummy cradle (for checking position arrangement)

    Hi everyone

Thanks for all the Likes and comments!  Greatly appreciated.

This is just another quick update.  I've been progressing with the internal fit out, albeit at a very early stage, taking care to ensure that the major cabin bulkheads are fitted and installed.  As usual, a whole bucket load more work to go; but it's a start.

    Enjoy!

    Cheers

    Patrick

She's been relatively trouble free, so far. Still lots of fun stuff, to go, though.

    Have a great week.

HI everyone - many thanks for all of your comments and Likes.  A special thanks to Leo-zd for the photos of his 1:1 ships!

A quick update.  I've spent the last couple of weeks cutting out and individually planking all of the internal decks.  In doing so, care was taken to ensure that each deck could be removed and inserted easily and smoothly.

Here are the results so far.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

    All the best everyone.

    Cheers

    Hi Leo

Thanks!   Those are some nice 1:1 models you've got there.

On the other hand, there's absolutely no problems about 'spamming' my log.  I enjoyed them. Maybe you could put more photos in the Shore Leave forum for all to enjoy?

    Cheers

    Matt, thanks.

It not that I'm not building, I am. But I got "volunteered" to do some large scale model RR structures for my train club. Built a 1/24 scale water powered grist mill and a small house. The house is a pile of sticks and some so-so plans (hmm, sounds familiar).  The launch sits on the back of my workbench, giving me it's "come hither" looks. And I have a battle station I've been eying with interest.

Hi Leo - I understand exactly what you're saying .  Your wife is/should be the 'best thing in your life'.  If not, then you're in strife.  You now what they say - Happy wife, happy life!  On another note, do you have any info/photos of your 1:1 scale model????

Hi Lawrence - many thanks.  I'm itching to get stuck into the internal accommodation, too.  Soon, I hope!

HaHaHa, told you it was just a little crazy, Thanks for all your comments and likes. Just a little different to say the least but it worked and will be covered up. Whether I needed blocks between all bulkheads I'm not sure, probably not, but now I am certain I will have a good base.

    Thanks Again
