    Build log part 51

    Update....

the forward boatsdeck ply-sheet is in dry-fit mode, in order to fit the semi-round front part, the slightly raised intermediate podest ( about 5 mm higher than the boats deck, where the boats will be seated), the stairs to the lower bridge level, the positions of the vents, ......
The stair-etch patterns I had were not long enough, so I am making these from longer patterns, ac.. to scale, but that unfortunately does not have rails, so bend and solder from 0,5mm brass wire. The bridge elevation will (not shown here) be reached by an additional upwards pair of stairs....

    Nils

    longer made stairs

the plank on edge resembles the level of the podest

due to the curvature of the deckhousing roof, the semi round white piece must be glued down later on and secured with two micro screws, that are srewed in here for dry fit already

the pair of face vents will be shortend later on

the support-beams rest on small cut-outs in the two nav-light towers

Congrats on a job well done.  Too bad I cannot be at the meeting to cheer you on.  fom what I have seen and been told you have a very bright future ahead of you in modeling.  Put it in a case and enter it into the contest at Manitowoc.  I think you will impress the judges and your fellow modelers. What do you have planned for your next project?

Looking good Elijah!  I see you got the poster board for a clean background.

For everybody following Elijah's build I want to tell you that when he comes to the local club meetings he is always asking how to do something in a better way and takes all the club members, as your suggestions/help, to heart.  He's well on his way to tackling much tougher subjects.  It's great to see his progress.

Keep up the good work Elijah.

Hello again! My boat is now a year old! I got it yesterday one year ago. I have finished the masts and have started work on the stays. Here are the pictures.

    Until next time!

Hello again! It feels like a while since I last updated. I had a while where I couldn't fit much if any build time in anywhere. Now, though, I have finished the bowsprit rigging and have started work on the fore mast. The rigging was done with the fittings unpainted and I painted them afterwards. That way the paint didn't peel or rub off while I got the lines on. It is not perfect, buy I think by the last line I kind of had the hang of it (pun intended ). After painting, I hand tapered the lower fore mast. I used my squishy sanding block from say back when I was sanding my hull. I filed the notch on the top for the last cap and glued it in. I then added the 'iron' bands on which are made of striping tape. I also glued in the eyebolts. The mast is stained, but the painted parts will be painted after all the structural work is complete. Anyway, here are the pictures!

    Until next time!

I am not almost finished with the boat, but am almost finished with the bowsprit. Next up are two cleats on the onboard side and bowsprit rigging. I hope these images work. Progress has been slow with everything going on lately. I hope to get back to pace late this month. We will see. Anyway, let's hope these images fit!

Until next time! Hopefully sooner than this time was.

I finished the fore deck. I was able to slow myself down, but I still have it finished. Next up is the bowsprit and bowsprit rigging. Most of the pieces on the fore deck just needed some painting and wire bending. Here are the images.

I don't know what is wrong with the upside down photos. Sorry! Until next time!

Been a bit since the last update.  Thanks for following along on this journey of discovery and sawdust and for the likes and the comments.

A bit of a minor/major milestone... the ship is in the cradle... YIPPEE!!!!!

The next step is start removing the build board and trimming down the frames to the sheer strake(s).

I considered pedestals versus a cradle as I didn't want to stress the keel, etc .nor did I want to attempt to put a large baseboard on at this point.  The cradle just seems (to me) to be steadier and stronger.  I noted that I do seem to get some wobble on my Constellation which is on pedestals.  It could be my method of mounting is faulty or just the way it is with them.

The cradle is 1/4" mahogany (see photo).  After finessing it into position, assembling it and re-finessing, I drilled a 3/32" hole through the cradle and inserted a brass tube of the appropriate diameter.  I mounted the cradle into position, and drilled (using the tubing as a drill guide) a 1/16" hole through the keel, frames and keelson.  A brass rod was inserted with a light coating of epoxy.  When set, the cradles were set into place with more epoxy on the brass rod and in two places on each end of the cradle.  The structure seems sound and steady.

I tried to design the cradle so as not to hide the lines of her and I think I pretty much succeeded.   At some point, the hole where the crosspieces go through the cradle will be covered by a small carving on each.  I'm leaning towards a fleur de lis.

    Anyway, here's the pictures.

Depends on the tube.  I ordered a 45W (which was tested and is putting out 50W) for $250 (not counting discount special going on) from lightobject.com.   The power supply came from Automation Technologies.   I think the tube supplier is getting better tubes from China these days.  The last one was rated at 45W and tested for 45W max.  The new one is the same tube I ordered the last time but the 50W is hit and with less input amperage.   Same for the power supply.  The replacement is higher rated for output and has a fan for cooling.

As I'm understanding it, the Chinese are in a mad race.... their lax patent rules and enforcement are coming back to haunt them, so the legit suppliers are stepping up efforts for quality in manufacturing and improvements in design while petitioning and pushing the government to crackdown on the patent/copyright infringers.

    But I digress...

I discovered the sequence of events and Murphy's part in this....   the water pump failed during a long, high-powered cut (which I contributed to per the above) which took out the tube from overheating... which took out the power supply.. which took out the controller board.   Water pump and controller are on order and should be here late this week.  I think that when the tube went, the 25kV followed the water down the high voltage cable to the power supply and there, all havoc was unleashed.    Oh... all this equipment went out in the process of protecting the fuses.  Not a single fuse blew.  Go figure.

As time permits, I'm still working on the cradles, but given the state of the workshop with laser parts all over, there's not much bench space for ship work.

Thanks for the laughs fellows, and yes, the lion needs a lot of help to make it satisfactory to me.  I'm after a wild and threatening look but not a self portrait though, that'll be too wild and threatening
I have been temporarily sidelined with a change in our dietary way of life and a few other things.

Hope to get back to the Surabaya soon and to another diorama of the Young America in scale of 1:3000 this time.  The plan is to show her at sea with a few sails.  Then there is a plastic kit of the Dutch submarine O16 I really need to build. My father served on her as well before he was placed on the O19.

So you see there is a lot of work waiting for me and I'm not even looking at my bucket list.  Help, I need another life time

thanks Pat    it's filling out ......but there's more still

I had a bit of time to mess with her........the net trawl rigs are in the beginning process.   there are the two dowels that are 290 mm {I may have to shorten them a little,  to match the nets}.   I have a pair of brass rings that are a perfect fit,  but that's it.......only two.  so,  I'll have to make some.  I took a couple of those small spools and cut the ends off them...sanded down, I think think they will do OK for the task.

    the net rig for the Cux.......and the part I need to make {two of them}

and it all will come together to look like this.

Here is what the Cux looked like.......I don't have the boat.......I sent it to Tom in Wisconsin.

the next thing I did,  was to bring out the soldering gun and make a jig for the shroud dead eyes.   my first try didn't hold up to me spreading the arms apart to accept a dead eye.   for the second attempt,  I gave it a handle,  as sort of a binder to hold the two sides together.   it's a working jig now

the port side shrouds are done.......I'm going to add ratlines.   I may not go all the way up though,  since there is a railing around the top.   perhaps half way up may be good enough.  thoughts on this would be helpful     so here are the shrouds and how they look........I made provision with three eye bolts,  but I only made use of two of them,  to give it some sort of taper,  as it goes to the top.

hopefully,  I can get more done tonight

well...I'm glad to hear it Patrick and Jesse      I try not to....the other build logs {on Word Press and other blogs} reflect it as well.    I feel that updating progress,  should be just as much fun,  as building the model.   less than that,  would make it a chore....and that's not what I would call an achievement.

I broke my own rule.........not like its a solid rule or something,   but I did play around a little.  I mentioned putting the fish box in place to see how it would look,  now that the rigging is in the picture.   I went a little further........Pat 'n you folks,  so kind in your comments,  I think you'd enjoy seeing  what I did.

the fish box and conveyors in place on deck.....the net lines lay i=on the fore deck.....

if the shrouds were in place.......I still have to make the jig.......this would look very different

I thought to myself,  that the boom winch would look more complete with the net lines rigged

the gallows winch  in contrast to it's surrounding detail

so I said the heck with it and rigged the net lines

so as it stands right now,  the forward 'haul' lines and the net lines,  are the only two not terminated.   there will be two other lines added for the net....they will be terminated, tied at the shrouds.   the forward haul lines will be tied at the cheats on the forward gallows

it will be a couple of dreary days of wet weather 'round here......I hope to get the net rigs together.   I hope to have more to report soon.  thanks again for the kind comments....enjoy

as seen earlier,  the boom winch was finally cemented in place.   during the last couple of days,  I did a little here,  and something stupid over there.......it would have been pointless to follow what I was doing.  when you hear the phrase 'rhyme or reason'.......think of me     they did!     wait though..........usually there's the word 'no' in front of it.   oh bother!

anyway........I mentioned shrouds.  the fish box changed this thought a little,  but I'm still doing them........just a bit differently.

for the Half Moon,   I got these dead eye collars {can't think of the name of them},  to make life a bit easy.   I got quite a few.....I'm sure the build won't miss them.

they were loaded with a dead eye,  assembled,  and cemented in place.......I corrected the port side,  being off on the location of the dead eyes.   I also cemented some single blocks to the deck.

finally.......after all this time,  the mast was cemented in place.   no more pull'in it out for some ungodly reason

    I had added a couple of cleats,  and a few more blocks to it.  then the rigging began { I hope you can see it.....I tried to take user friendly pictures}.  the center most blocks were rigged,  even added a couple of single blocks to the hold, and rigged it to open and close.  {not really,  but you get the picture....nudge,  nudge,  wink,  wink}

where to terminate them was a puzzle........no belaying pins,  so a fife rail of sorts was out {I wasn't going to use pieces of rod or anything silly}.   I decided to terminate them at the winch drum.

then I began with the booms......rigging the lifts.  something weird about this one...I'll have to check it out.   I wondered what mechanism would be used to swing the boom in and out.  with the net affixed on the boom,  there will not be enough weight to keep the pulley assembly taught.   I will add a set of lines that will not only do that,  but give the impression that they perform this task.

turned around,  the starboard side will be done now.   I've only terminated the aft line on the port side.  the fore line will be done after the shrouds are rigged.   there will be some standing rigging for the bow too.......I haven't done it yet.

this pulley assembly came out right.......this is the way it should look.

the aft line is terminated at a cleat on the side of the gallow.   the fore line will be terminated at a cleat on the fore gallow.
this is done on both sides.

there are some small lights that be located on those three pedestals above the top.   I still have a little bit of the window maker,  so I could fill in the lenses.   when they dry,  they will be clear.........I may try and get some yellow paint inside to color the window maker.   when I do the Nav lights,  they will either be done the same way,  or I will used the red and green plastic inserts that come with them.

the cleats for the 'swing lines' are located on the sides of the gallows..........here they are fore and aft.

the layout is almost to the point,  where I can cement in the fish box and the conveyors.   this will pretty much finish off the mid ship,  and I can move on to the helm and aft.   I did have one mishap though........I broke a blade off the prop.   I glued it,  but it came off again........so now I've removed the prop and cemented it again.  hopefully I did a better job this time,  and I can put it back on.   once the mid ship is done,  I'm hoping for a quick finish,  and I can move on to another victim.......errrrrrr,  I mean project

a small step forward.....but this is big.   the boom winch is in place!   I added the brake levers and cemented it in place.....no more parts will be added to it.   the levers are actually parts that I did not use for the AmericA build........they are the light boxes.   painted up and affixed to the winch,  they serve the purpose well enough.   you may not readily see them in the picture.......I took it this morning before the camera decided that it needed to be fed {charged up}.

the holes for the shrouds are already drilled......eye bolts dry fitted at the moment.  I need to adjust the port side though, since I found that the gallow for the port side is a bit forward than the starboard side.  I'm sure there will be more parts added,  before this is said and done

    more to come

the holidays are over...........steadily trying to pick up where we left off here.   there are two more parts I want to add to the boom/net winch....these got a coat of paint.  while they were drying,  I figured I'd do a little toggling between two larger steps,   faring the frame of the Thermopylae,  and starting on the nets for this build.   the templates were drawn out for them......I thought I'd try to do it,  so I'd only have to sew one side of the net.   I did both sides when I did the nets for the Cux....can't tell ya how many times I picked myself with the needle.    I thought this would do the trick.........

....till I came back to the table a bit later and realized that it wouldn't work.   not feeling like redoing it, I just cut them out.   I have two different colors of netting.......I bought this a while back {can't remember which ship I got it for}.  I got it from the local Hobby Lobby.

this is pretty close to the netting you get in most Billing's kits........the weave is small enough.

290 mm across x 290 mm deep....I chose the brown.   laying a big piece of thick cardboard on the table,  the template was laid out and the netting was paid over it.   I used a couple short lengths of 2 x 4 to weight it down.   the triangular cutouts were brought to my desk.

the first one I did freehand.......with nothing to hold it in place or anchor.......what a pain!   brought back some fond memories,  I can tell ya that!

using those clamps you see.........I devised an anchor system.    it made life a little easier

now........I thought I had folded it out to make two sets of net halves.   seems I underestimated how thin this material really is.   I ended up with four nets........and I made them all.   I was rather bug eyed by the time I was done.

I still need to trim off the excess thread and turn them inside out.   there is still a little more prep work.......and then the net rig needs to be made.   I will also add the round buoys from the Cux instructions as well.
