Hi Joe, (Wacko), the plans and reference info seem to indicate there are 5 harpoons, lances, and hooks per boat.  I only have 5 boats visible that will be hanging from the davits.  2 boats are stowed upside down on the shelter roof which I haven't built yet.  There are also 4-5 harpoons that hang underneath the the roof on yet unbuilt racks.  So there's a bunch of them.....Depending on how they look on the boats will determine how many I will put inside them as there is a lot of other stuff that goes into them as well.....buckets, mast and sail, buckets, and more so should they start getting too full I will limit them to what just looks good instead of historically correct.  Don't want to create the image that if you launch one with 5 men in there also, that they would sink because of being overweight.....we'll see.....

Hi Piet, they're still waiting for you to make them.....ha ha.....seriously, a few chores needed around the house is taking precedence....must keep the Admiral happy, so there has been some delays on this end.  Later in the evenings I have been able to do a little work.  I managed to build the Fife Rail and get the Bilge Pumps mounted.  Pictures a little later today when everything is dry.  Just a little progress, but it is progress......so the enquiring minds will have to wait a bit.....

Thanks to all that contributed pictures, articles and instructions on how to build the Harpoons......very much appreciated.  That's one of the cool things about the forum is that help is just a matter of asking.  Thanks Mates......

I did more to the hull I dubbed Curly......installing the second row planking for the bulwark.

the hull I dubbed Larry has had it's share of problems.   I needed to pick up the pace on 'em and start the planking process.   it all started out so well.........I got the bulwark post sanded enough to accept the planking {I'll get to the rest later}.  the port side was almost set in place,  when I heard the snap......the bow post had broken off.   well........no time to stop now!   I propped up the broken post,  and did the starboard side......I'll fix it later!

it's funny........the one I was so worried about.......was no trouble at all     well,  this has all been fun and games..........and languishing on this project has been fun........but this isn't getting anything done on my other builds.  so,  I will go and get into something a little more entertaining........in the meantime, I will fix my problems and go further with this project a bit later.........I'll update when I hit some kind of milestone....or something.   I moved them to the other table.......to save space,  I found a neat way to store the other two.

I also got a bit of a start on the hull frame that I dubbed Curly.   it's not much,  but things are moving along.   these are full length planking strips,  primarily to stabilize the entire frame.   I wanted to do all of the bulwarks with this 1.8 x 8 x 720mm planking.......I took a count......I figure four per side.   that equates to 24 strips......I won't have enough.  so one per side will have to be done with the 1.8 x 8 x 550mm strips that I have on hand.   as long as I have a full strip along the scupper line,  It'll be alright.   the reason why I'm concerned with this,  is because I don't want the scuppers to be near a butt joint.  I did a twist test with the frame I dubbed Moe,  and with two rows of planking,  it seems pretty sturdy.    so, here is the progress I've done on this one.

ok.........now I go to bring the  Christmas stuff up from down in the cellar.  who knows what I'll find....last year's fruitcake......maybe

Either way your doing an excellent job with the detail. Like remco says each part is a kit of it's own, and your showing that by doing the extra detail work. Keep the pictures coming. How many you got left to make?

Hi Lawrence, well, it seems that each whaleboat had 5 on them, so I have 5 boats exposed and 2 turned upside down and stowed, so that makes 20 and then there are about 5-7 of them stowed under the shelter roof that I still have to make so that makes 25-28.  Now once I start on the boats I'll determine what works with the scale and stock them accordingly.  There are a lot of things that go into the boats, which really make them a build of their own....tiny repetitious models.....we'll see.....

The first shrouds are on it.
Also the deadeyes and the lanyards.
The first two pictures shows you the served rope.
It goes to where the futtock staves are coming.
I think that it is right but when I'm wrong, please say so.

You must have been real good Mate, those are some fine looking tools.....just keep the fingers out.  I like the way you did your yards, and showing the needlework and splice.  I will have to remember to go through your log again when I get to that stage of the build.  All of your little jigs will really be helpful.

Thanks again Wayne, Mobbise, Augie, Lawrence and Mick, and all the "likes".

Today I added the horses (foot ropes) and the stunsl booms.  The horses are spliced over the end of the yard, and then threaded through the stirrups before being spliced again just outside the sling cleats. In reality, the inner end has a thimble that is lashed around the yard.  Inspired by Blue Ensign, I also "cheated" by using the splice on the inboard side.  The last item to attach were the stunsl booms, which had been pre-made and simply required lashing at the inboard end.  With that, I declare the Fore Lower Yard complete and ready to be attached to the ship.

You may have noticed that I also had a birthday during the week.  Well, all I can say is that I must have been a very, very good boy this year! :D  I hope the mods will indulge me a slight diversion here.

My darling wife obviously thinks I need to spend more time in the shipyard, and bought me this:

I was also allowed to buy this for myself:

And during our recent holiday, we saw a Leonardo da Vinci exhibition in Venice.  Knowing my love of his drawings of machines, my son gave me this:

Plenty to keep me busy once I eventually finish this project!

Thanks again everyone for the kind comments and the likes.

Progress is once again at a glacial pace as life seems to have a habit of getting in the way at the moment. Nevertheless, I did manage to progress a bit further with the yard preparation today.

I made an interesting discovery in my wife's favourite sewing shop today - "self-threading" needles.  And they work!

I received some more of Chuck's excellent rigging thread in the post this week, so was able to start on the stirrups.  I must admit to once again being inspired by the work of Blue Ensign on his outstanding Pegasus build. He is just far enough ahead of me in progress terms to be an excellent source of guidance and inspiration.  So my method for the stirrups follows pretty closely to his.

It starts with forming a "false splice" in one end of the thread.  I'm using 0.30 mm black thread for my stirrups, which is pretty close to scale for the 4-inch circ. rope used at full scale.  I've chosen to do my stirrups and horses in black, which may or may not be correct, but is consistent with my choices for hammock netting and ratline colours.  The method of forming the "false splice" is borrowed from Gil Middleton, repeated by Blue Ensign, and now by me.

A needle is used to thread the line back through itself:

And then back through a second time:

The completed "splice" looks like this:

The splice is then placed over a 1mm diameter brass rod held in a Fly-tying vice (thanks Mobbsie for that idea ) :

A dab of CA is applied to the splice and around the eye, which is then carefully removed from the brass rod:

The stirrups are then attached to the yard, being wrapped three times around the yard, with the "fall" of the stirrup lying on the aft side of the yard, and outboard of the turns. A dab of CA is applied and once set, a small weight is applied to the fall of the stirrup and the entire stirrup painted with diluted PVA and left to dry overnight.  Tomorrow I will add the horses.

You can also see in the picture above and the next below, the Truss Pendants, which have been fitted with a brass thimble and seized to the yard.  Note that the thimble lies down on the starboard side and up on the port side (as per Longridge pg 240).

If I can finish the horses tomorrow, that will be the Fore Lower Yard complete.  Only eight more yards to go!  (then I will be able to say I've gone "the whole nine yards" )

Thanks Piet, I was able to find what I needed at Hobby Lobby.  Wasn't exactly but I think close enough.  Found a sheet of .008", I haven't calipered it to metric yet, as it is still packaged, but it was the only size they had, it had a little crease or dent in it, so I got  a 4" x 10" sheet for $1.39.  Bargain since I'm going to be cutting it in pieces.  I also found some .8 mm brass rods. Thanks for telling me the sizes, now all I have to do is match your forging skills and I'll be off and running.  Looks like if I match the requirements I'll be building 5 harpoons for the boats, and 8-10 for the racks......going to get a lot of practice.
