It is certainly worth seeing as is the Constitution if you get this way. I really enjoyed seeing the restoration people working on the ship. They not only have the contractors and supervisors but about 1,200 volunteer workers (mostly former Navy dudes) that work on anything that needs doing. Like a bunch of ants working. Very interesting to witness this. They are not only restoring the ship, they are teaching and preserving the old shipwrights skills in building a ship of this nature. They use as many of the old tools and methods as they can and are teaching a new generation a "lost art". Many of the trees that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and Rita in '05 were harvested from Louisiana and brought to Mystic to be used on the rebuild. Red Oaks have been used in areas they would have used Pine since it was available. There was one tree they estimated was 600 years old, and they harvesed 10 truck loads of lumber and timers from it. The stump is there at Mystic as a tribute it looks to e about 8-9 feet in diameter. Also timbers stored at the Charleston navy yard in Boston where the Constitution is berthed were discovered by the Navy and is being used on the Morgan. Interesting bits of historical importance in this rebuild.

Some additional progress on the stern.

Rather then fiddle with a paper template, I made a balsa spacer to set the height of the sills.  This will determine the height of the windows:

The sills were then installed.  Once again the pencil sander was used to fair them to the transom .... inside and out.  It has now been determined this tool IS the best thing since sliced bread:

As a final check, another paper template was used to see if we're in the ballpark:

Finally, here's an overall shot as it's been a while:

    Jim-

The 'management' of this thread accepts no liability for miscellaneous tool purchases and denies all culpability for any recommendations (implied or otherwise) as to the actual utility of the specified devices.

But heck --- it works !!!!

Hi Hamilton, I have been thinking about the same thing.  I'm currently thinking about how to accomplish this.

Well, I am currently in Virgina Beach, Va. First time I have been here in 41 years (since I was separated from the Navy in 72). We're staying directly across from Oceana NAS, and the F-18's have been flying over us all day....brings back many memories, since I was stationed here with the JFK at NOB, Norfolk. We used to camp out here in tents when we had free time from the ship. Now my Admiral understands why I'm as deaf as I am.....loud fighter jets with no ear protection...she gets the picture...lol. Pictures following soon. Have to pay for internet by the day here, so pictures might come later on.

No visit to Mystic is complete without having pizza at Mystic Pizza. This is where the movie was filmed and inspired that julia Roberts made her debut. It's cool, and the pizza is fabulous.

OK, Augie, why do you have to find another $90.00 tool that I now have to buy?????? You realize that you have now started another craze of "must have" items on the bench!

Looking nice Hamilton.  I am hoping to be there soon once I return home.  I don't think I can get much accomplished on the road.

Er... no I won't.   I'm mellowing out....     41 days and counting.    Yes, there is a not so subtle irony on planking a POF and framing a POB.   But that's what makes this hobby so dang much fun.

I have to be honest, Mark has already more then 3000…….
All the credits goes to him !

But this is not only a post for the 3000.
The ratlines of the lower part of the masts are finished.
Tomorrow I can start with making the deadeyes and shrouds for the next part of the masts.
    So more ratlines to come
