Building the little things, is almost as much fun as building the boat. Added to my Philadelphia the small things make it look nicer.

I started this a few months ago, a follow up to my Midwest models I finished last winter. Overall I am pretty pleased with the kit and the build, more mistakes than I care to mention. I need to work on my planking and rigging skills, but it is what it is at this point. I want to thank the other members who posted their build logs, making it easier for me to create something special for my grandson.

Yes agreed, these are great kits especially for beginners like myself, and look very nice upon completion. Working on finishing up the grandkid fleet, one boat for each kid. The Lobster Smack is completed and am in the process of working on the sharpie Schooner. The Sharpie got upgraded to deck and cabin planking. After the Sharpie is complete I will be taking a spring break, if it ever shows up in NY. I have already purchased next winters project, The Gunboat Philadelphia and will be looking forward to challenging myself with a harder build.

I Purchased a few Midwest kits from e-bay, after my Virginia pilot boat build. I wanted a few easy/quicker builds for my grand kids. The Flattie and Lobster smack fit the bill nicely and give me a little more confidence as I learn as I build. I finished up the Flattie this week, it was my first build with sails, and I am pretty happy with the kit and the finished model. Next up is the Lobster smack

Yes indeed, patience comes with age.

Very nice, did your kit come with sails? I had my biggest problems with the planking.

Thanks for the welcome, something very satisfying looking at a completed project. I can honestly say, more than a few times I almost trashed it. The first time, when I ripped the first layer of planking off not satisfied with it. Now that I got the building bug I can't stop looking for more

New member here, My name is Lou and recently finished my first wood ship model. A little background on me, recently retired, 60 yr. old with plenty of free time. I have an array of building tools left to me from my father who built a few model ships as well as some in bottles. I wish I had paid more attention growing up I might of learned something, all the questions he could of answered now come from Forums and web sites, glad they are available. We did build some RC aircraft together and I still like to fly them but decided it was time to try a ship, had it sitting for the past 6 months. I purchased an older die cut Artesania Latina Virginia Pilot Boat 1805 because the buy it now price was to good to pass at $30. I figured I won't be out that much $ if I had to use it for a Viking funeral. I made plenty of mistakes and covered up a lot as well but was still happy I finished it. Now the grand kids have seen it and want ship models, I decided a few easy kits would fit the bill, and after reading up decided on the Midwest boats Muskongus bay lobster smack and Chesapeake bay Flattie. Maybe down the road after these two are finished I might dive into something more challenging, I did enjoy the building and would like something a little bigger next time.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
