Then there's the big question what next.  Sure you got the Gothenburg but I just can't see you doing only one or two builds.

    Ahoy Daniel

    Welcome to Model Ship World

The Elsie is a solid hull and an entry level kit. I would love to say that makes it easy but it only means it is easier then others. All of these kits require a commitment and time

I would start a log here. Read other logs, they don't have to be the same ship. Take your time and post questions, review the responses then act. The key to success with these kits is to find out first then do the work. Test and practice before committing to the model

Perhaps 4whelr will start a log and the two of you can work togeather to reslove any issues associated with this kit

    Here are some links

"Hopeful" is a very skilled builder and has a similar build here
    http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/1603-phantom-by-hopeful-model-shipways-scale-148/

One of the Moderators did the practicum (advanced instructions) for the Sultana here (under the "Documents tab" )
    http://www.modelexpo-online.com/product.asp?ITEMNO=MS2016

    Both of these will help

I am new too and just finished planking my intermediate level kit. Took me over 120 hours

Good luck with your build; they are a lot of fun.

    Thanks Garward.

A small update I added the stern chasers tiller a couple cannons and the bowsprit.  The cannons have proved easier with a draw plate.  I used to turn all of them but they never came out the same size.

I must be reading Augies build log to often because i added the Syren red gunports.  The color scheme i was given called for red, gold, white and black.  I had them all but read and I wasn't sure where to put it so I painted the gun ports.  I think it makes them pop a little more.

You aren't even kidding. Got the hatches down but now I got to pick up my sister from the airport in this icy mess.  Guess I better reef the sails and take it steady as she goes. I'm of tired of this bipolar weather.

I use a pin vise similar to this one.  The only real difference is the handle is wood and not plastic.  I got it from a friend not sure where he got it.

You can get this one here for $4.49

    http://www.cmlsupply.com/pin-vise-hand-drill-bit-chuck-ball-head.html

What I like about these is you hold the ball in your palm and turn the vise.  It's more comfortable and help keep me more accurate.  You don't need the drill to spin fast if your just going through wood.  The bits are small and sharp and will sink into the wood pretty quickly just turning by hand.

I always judge a good model as one where I feel like I could climb aboard and sail away on.  This one is a thousand times more then that.  Incredible work to the last detail.

I tried a new technique today creating the figurehead.  Took a lot of tries but it worked out.

You can see what she's supposed to look like on the plans.  Given the scale I think she looks pretty good.  Got the idea from an amazing SIB builder Michael Bardet of France.  Here's the link.

     http://michel.bardet.pagesperso-orange.fr/rdr2006infoa.htm

Simply put I took a piece of wire and bent it into the shape of the figurehead.  Then painted it a couple times to fill out the shape.

Got the port side done and the rudder in place.  Still need to add the keel which is why I left the rudder so long.  My philosophy is cut big and sand to size. So far it works.

I also decided to change the way I did the windows and the transom.  The ship lacked color so I cut off the old transom added color to the plans in Photoshop and printed a new one.  I like this much better.  Then like an idiot I nick it with the dremel.   So if you see some paint differences that's why.

I also added gold paint around the windows.  This actually did two things added color and the build up of the paint gave it a more defined  windowsill look.  I'm much happier with my windows now.

Food is fine so long as you clean it up after.  No one likes a sticky forum floor.

So I'm still not sure about this one.  I think I'm in over my head with the planking method and I'm thinking of reverting back to my specialty in solid hulls.  It's that or I'm to much of a perfectionist.  Feel free to share your thoughts on this I really need honest opinions.  Since the pirates are actually paying for this I want it to be my best work.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Well i have some bad news.  The ship as is has been scrapped.  As I was comparing it to the draughts it had some fatal flaws that made it not at all the ship I was trying to build.  I think I may still use it later since it looks good but I'm starting over on the Mercury.  To me it's all part of the learning experience.  I did the same thing on the cutter I built using the same technique.  The first time I built it I planked the hull and it looked so bad I threw it way.  It did turn out to be one of my best ships though.  I've posted a picture below in case any one wanted to see it.  I hope to have pictures of the new and improved Mercury soon.

what I mean is,  you have to spray a seal coat on them.   with ink jet decals,  this is very important....the ink is on the surface of the decal film.  if you were to put water on them,  the ink would come off.   Testors has a decal program you can purchase

    Testors

they also carry decal bonder to spray on after the decals are printed.   there are two drawbacks though.......printers cannot print white and there is a bit of a transparency issue......I haven't worked it out yet...still experimenting.   I've made decals for all my boats
