 Nils,
That's a great tip, thanks. I guess I'll start going to flea markets, too.

And the rest of you guys, thanks for tuning in. I consider all of you much more accomplished than me.

 Pete,
It's coming along. I'm pleased, although there are elements I'd do differently. I love your Muscongus Bay boats; you certainly know how to put those together. How was the move? I hope you didn't have to go too far.

Nils, Thanks, but your Bohuslan is the standard; a truly beautiful piece of work. I loved your use of plumbing fixtures for ventilators. I saw it too late to try it myself. Sometimes I wish I had more stuff on the deck like you do. It makes things more interesting to look at. From my model railroad days I remember the old saying, "the clutter is the clincher".

Stern galleries v2.0. Walnut looks much better than lime which had to be painted. Maybe I'll add some decoration to the black top, maybe not.

Cheers, Martinw. Jack just got some new equipment and a bottle of port. There is also new lighting - instead of two huge LEDs I've installed short piece of LED strip - more light and it won't be visible through the windows

this will be my first scratchbuilt project.based on a set of plans first published around an article in modelboats cica 1996 by a chap called peter danks. (myrmidon man?)
apparently this vessel was originally built for service on the great lakes of north america during the america war of independance.
built around ply wood bulkheads on a similar system to some of the billing kits ie in two halves.
 wales planked using 3mm x 4mm beech.
all other planking in lime wood.
various fittings will be in a mixture of other timbers including boxwood, ramin.

found some more pictures of current build.should bring things up to date. almost ready to start rigging.will be using chuck passaros blocks and rope.

already used some of chucks cannon barrels on scratch built carriages.absolutely superb qaulity turnings.

will also be using chucks lantern kit as a final stern embellishment.

postman brought my latest kit this morning, direct from model expo in florida . rn pinnace based on chucks prototype. should be an interesting build.

also have just subscribed to deagostini for their hms surprise kit.this will form the basis of a heavily modified kit build.some of the components are crude to say the least. i was intending to build this as the refitted ship circa 1798? hence the purchase of the original draft from the nmm.wont be starting this for another 12 months or so, lots of planning to do first.

 Steering Rigging

I also rigged the Steering Wheel to the Tiller. I removed the previously fitted eyebolts in each side, as it's MUCH easier to strop the blocks to them in my vice rather than on the ship.

The blocks are 6" (3mm) from Syren Ship Models, and the line is 3" (0.45mm) from the same place - great stuff, thanks Chuck . I also seized the line to the starboard side of the Tiller off the ship :

Then I replaced the eyebolts/blocks on the starboard side and glued in the wheel :

Five turns around the wheel Hub, replaced the Port side blocks and did the rather fiddly seizing to the port side of the tiller - TWICE. The first attempt wasn't as successful as I'd have liked - I took over an inch of slack out of the line the second time :

Some views of the completed rigging. Note the very small nail in the centre of the turns on the hub :

See you all in a couple of weeks.

 Danny

Thank you Geoff - you didn't have long to wait for this one, but the next update won't be for a week or two - I'm back up to the van and some more will be done on that Victory re-build (maybe even get her finished I hope ).

Going through my "Finished Parts" drawer this morning I realized I could fit the already finished Brake Pumps, so I did :

So some more pictures...I have been busy on a job but try to work a bit every day on the Triton.

I am pretty much at this point fairing the inside, adjusting frames and adding the gunport sills.

Here I am fairing the inside using and old plane iron both ends work well.

Measuring the sill height from the frame plan I printed our and taped together, the rueler across the bottom in my Drywall T

I need to put a new outside support (riban) for the frames then I will start build the lower deck

 To be continued:

The finished sail was provided with the necessary lines and furled to the yard. The buntline blocks were installed as descript in Lees. After putting up the yard with parrel ropes, ties and lifts the cluelines and sheets were installed.

For the lifts I choose (together with my bosun) a rather unconventional instalment. During the period of Pegasus’ build and live usually the topgallant sheets were used also as topsail lifts. In earlier or later times the lifts ran from the masthead; the same arrangement that is shown in the kits plans. The yard by yard build up seems easier for me, if I use separate lifts and sheets. Therefore, upon a suggestion of my bosun, I decided on a clove hitched span around the cap and seized the topsail lifts to it.

Another problem is the belaying of all those lines. The space is rather cramped and I try to find reasonable belaying points using the plans and Lees while not overcrowding the bitts and rails.

In the meantime the sail maker has started to work on the main topgallant sail.

In the beginning there is still some space to belay the lines on the quarterdeck rail

 Buntlines are in place

Captain Jack asks for more order around the bitts...

...and the bosun tries to live up to this rather untimely request.

Braces, sheets and tacks on lower yards will be installed last in order not to block access to the deck.

Next was the mighty main yard. First, the main sail was made similar to the mizzen top sail. Its size was reduced by about 30%. I need a little material to form a bulk in the middle of the furled sail and for such a large square sail this seemed about the necessary size. (The furled sail looks quite OK.)

The sail was bent to the yard and blocks for sheets and clues as well as clues and buntlines were attached. There will be 2 buntlines rigged according Lees. This means that only one buntline could be attached to the sail as it will lead through several blocks back to the sail as its own second buntline and can only be fixed with the yard mounted.
The buntline blocks on the yard were positioned wrongly (I put them up according the plans) and had to be shifted.

Then the sail was furled and now the yard brought to the mast. First a sling was put in place to hold the yard. Then it was held to the mast with the truss pendants (no parrel rope on this yard). The pendants lead towards the deck and are seized with simple falls via blocks to the riding bitts.

Now the jeers were installed and belayed to the main bitts. The clue lines were belayed on the riding bits. Finally the lifts were put up and the ends belayed – contrary to the plan, but according Lees- on the timber head near the first main mast shroud.

The belaying points according to the kits plans differ for several lines from those in Lees ‘Masting and Rigging...’ and I mainly followed Lees.

Between knotting and splicing I made the first gun port lid and installed it. The hinge got an additional small piece of cartridge paper to represent the fixed part on the hull.

 Hi Nils and Mike

 Thank you.
It’s actually fun to try to find out about the function of all those lines in the rigging (quite often I feel like Steven Maturin ) and to install them correctly. There are some differences between the kits plans and Lees book. Sometimes I go with the book and other times (especially if it’s simpler but still looks reasonable) with the plan. My Pegasus seems to have a unique bosun: sometimes he is very conservative and using old fashioned solutions and suddenly his work borders on science fiction. But over all I enjoy the setting up of the running rigging more than is right.

 Cheers
 Peter
