Mirabell61 reacted to kscadman in US Brig Syren by kscadman - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64 - first wooden ship build
Ah, its good to see some progress. I've completed 8 of my carronades and now its time to finish the the 2nd half of them. They're dry fitted for now, but its nice to see something occupying the deck.
I still think I have the wrong carronades but I'll work with what I have. Also I'll probably rig them as I do final installation - lessen the risk of breakage, lol.

Hi everyone, I finally have a chance to work on my Syren.
I've completed putting the figurehead on which was an adventure in itself.I ended up breaking the lower cheeks off while fitting the figurehead. Also I've been able to get the swivel brackets, pinrails and cleats installed. Now I'm working on my carronades. Two are done and fitted.

Hi everyone, here is a quick update of where I am now. The spars and braces are up, and at this stage, all that I have left is some rigging at the bow and stern, the backstays, jib stay, tighten up some other lines, and add the remaining detail items (driver boom, some more coils, the anchors and non buoys, rudder chain and flag). I was originally planning to have the ship completed by the end of last month, but came down with shingles of all things. Thankfully I'm better after about three weeks of excruciating pain, and making some good progress. I'm not in a rush at this point, as I'm not expecting the upgraded wood packages for my next two builds, the Corel Unicorn and MS Charles Morgan, until April or May. So, that gives me time to enjoy the home stretch and finish the display case.
Enough rambling, here are some pictures. Again, sorry for the poor quality, but this is the most neutral background I can find in my house Thanks for looking in as always.

Here are the pictures - sorry they are a little dark, but the lighting in my living room (the only neutral background I could find) is not the best. Thanks!

Well I had a little time the last few days, so thought I would ease back into the build by building the anchor buoys. Let's just say they took me probably four or five times longer than I thought they would I have to clean them up a bit, but here they are. I was fairly pleased for the first attempt at making them.
To build the buoy, most people I see use wooden dowels. I started down that road, but ended up switching the black sculpey clay. I used that clay earlier on the build for the mouse stays - it's easy to mold, quick to bake in your oven, and comes in various colors. I was able to make a bunch of different sizes until I got to the size that I thought worked best, and it was much quicker than working with dowels by hand or on my lathe. Once baked, I painted them with brown acrylic. The acrylic ended up acting more like a wash than a paint on the clay, which ended up giving it the look I was hoping for (not solid, but sorta worn and weathered) without using different shades of brown and black as I first thought I would end up having to do.
The buoy harness (if that is what it is called) was probably the biggest pain for me. There are eight ropes running along the length, and two rope bands that go around the width. The bands only are knotted at the four ropes that start from the opposite end of the buoy, and lay over the other four that start at the end closest to the hoop (hope that makes sense) I started by first making a "spider" with two lengths of rope that crossed each other with one of them making the harness loop at the top. Glued the spider to the top, and the first half portion of the "legs" down the length of the buoy. Then I repeated with the other side. That was fairly easy, but figuring out the bands was tricky. I tried doing pre-made bands to slide onto the buoy, but they never looked right. I ended up taking the approach of cutting a length of thread, and tying each of the four knots one by one working around the diameter of the buoy. Once the knots were done and dabbed with diluted PVA, I cut the extra lengths, and glued the legs and the bands onto the buoy. That part took me a few hours to figure out how to do, but they came out ok I think.
Next up - furled sails (finally).

I've been missing in action the past few months as my wife had twins at the end of March. It's been a bit hectic to put it mildly, so I haven't had time to hit the shipyard recently. Thankfully the girls are almost three months now and sleeping better, so I'm gearing up to get back to work on the Badger.
Here are some pictures of where I left off earlier this year. Most of the standing rigging is done, and I'm about to start on adding furled sails. I'm hoping to finish it before the end of the year as I now have the Corel Unicorn and the Amati Pegasus on my shelf. Between kids and honey-do's, and of course being a complete novice, the build has taken me four and a half years.

You have made a fine job of Badger Mike, your guns and rigging look impressive and I particularly like the fineness you have achieved with the topmasts.

It's a whole new experience to see a ship model grow at such a fast pace. Maybe I should also publish my build log only after my Cutty Sark model is ready. On the other hand, you then would have to wait till 2020 (or beyond) and not everyone might still be around then. After all, I started researching her in the nineteen fifties...
