    Ratlines port side foremast done….
Now only the starboard side to do
The last picture you see the Le Mirage, Smit Rotterdam ( tug boat ) and the Spirit of Mississippi ( paddle steamer )
I have also make the gammoning and the fore stay.
I know that the foremast is now ( I think ) a little bit to far to the back.
I hope I can change that otherwise I let it this way.
    PICTURES!!!!!!

And Ferit? I have fix the gap

on the site that I moderate,  I would give the same advice.  unless the repair is an easy one,  that doesn't require a lot of tearing down,  I would say to leave it and move on.  life is too short,  and it wouldn't be good if the repair went south for some reason or another.  what you have learned here,  will benefit you on the next build......

you still have the fore mast to step,  and the yards to do.........perhaps after all this is done,  you'll find that it doesn't really look that bad at all.   I think you've done a splendid job,  in spite of all that's gone on,  in a short period of time

Robbyn, here are a few things that are so great about first builds: We learn new skills and subject matter, we discover our strengths and areas for improvement as model shipwrights, we meet and make new friends, we can share what we've learned with others, and so much more. They also can open our eyes to how we treat ourselves: Would we tell to someone else what we say to ourselves about our builds? I once heard a long time ago that a miracle is a change in one's perspective. Your build looks great--look at all the positives that its brought into your life! I'm willing to betcha all those far outweigh a few minor hiccups. Yep, these first builds are awesome, and it's great to see you embracing yours--well done, hand buddy!

LOL, you will have more fun building one - you haven't finished your Victory yet - you don't want another, your wife will kill you!

It is going over because Amati actually own the model, and of course, they take professional pictures for box art and other promotional stuff.

    Thank you Joe.

You could make the kit every bit as good, if not much better than the one I made. One thing I do notice on some threads is that some areas seem to be rushed, especially hull prep and painting. If you take your time on this area - fill, sand, fill, sand etc, prime the hull to see where the rest of the imperfections are, and go through it all again until most if not all imperfections/cracks are gone - and then for good measure, do it one last time, the end result can look great - even if you make a hash off the planking (as I usually do...). This does take time, as does the painting - and masking for this particular model. I am sure I spent more time preparing the hull and masking than any other aspect.

Always take your time, never rush. If you're not happy with what you've just done, simply start that area again - this happened several times to get the yellow/black bands correct, or, as correct as they can be to my eye. For a kit like this (or ay other, TBH), never employ a 'That'll do' policy, and the end result is something you and others will be very happy with.

Of course! First planking is 1.5x6mm limewood and second is 1x5 walnut:

    Second planking:

    Chris,

What a great design.  It is truly an honor to see your development.  Thanks for taking the time from your busy schedule to share this with us here.  Hope my body can hold out before this kit comes available.  I've said before, but I'll say it again, Amati is truly lucky to have you.

    Hi,

Yes, it is the same model. It seems to have took an age to get this far due to all of the internal work.

I have added PE window frames to the kit version of the area in front of the stove, after my trip to Portsmouth

Gee I posted this last night, but today the post has disappeared hmmmmmmme thinks the gnomes, wabbits and spiders have been up to no good
Finished the upper shroud on the main mast last night. Not tickled pink by it, I personally think they are not spaced far enough apart. However, with all the issues I already had, I am not even considering ripping them out and redrilling anything. I don't think I have enough metal left of my crow's nest as a foundation. Re0doing the crow's nests themselves would require a tearing out of the lower shrouds as well....so it aint happening!
Not my best work, but the SF is that much closer to being completed and she will still hold a special place on the shelf as a learning project. I can only hope to aspire to doing better on the next build!

thanks Aldo...this is the most repeditive part of the build.   I've done a few so far.........small ones,  these are much larger.   I dealt with the pre formed ratlines in most of my plastic kits.  I like doing them......didn't think I would,  but it's like the old saying .......try it,  you'll like it!

when I was doing the Cutty Sark build,  I had sent in a missing parts request for the sails,  ratlines , and a decal sheet.  I got everything, but one sheet of sails.  I had a plan for the ratlines on another build........I did it.....and bagged the rest of them and put them away.  well,  I am a moderator on another site.......and one day I viewed a post asking for preformed ratlines,  for a build this fellow was doing.  he mentioned that he was in his 70's,  and was having a hard time doing them.   I packed them up and sent them to him,  with a note telling him how he could trim them to fit.  I also plan to do them on my United States build,  so that means that I'll have another set kicking around.
not a big deal........I'll just wait till there is a call for them......there's a home for them somewhere.

Thanks Popeye. I forgot to mention how impressed I am with your build. It's so easy to make a mistake but it's usually not obvious until the glue is applied or the knot is tied   :D  For some strange reason I'm looking fwd to rigging my ship.

I managed to get a little work done in the shop today, I'll write something up along with a couple of photos on my log tomorrow...

thanks Aldo......the shrouds are a slow-go at the moment......I'm hoping to pick up the pace.  I'll be glad to get all this spagetti tied off......it's starting to bug me

I did get a couple more shroud lines done.....wasn't long before I made my first goof.  After making the pair for the other side,  both sides were tied off.

in doing the lead shroud for the main mast,  the starboard side was rigged first.   in tying the dead eye for the port side,  I forgot to run the line through the top.   I had to take it all out and do it over.

but all was not lost.....I found that the line could be moved to the mizzen.   now both of the lead shroud lines are done.

I took this picture of the stern....it would look better if they were complete.

then I took these random pictures

perhaps the next update will show more progress.

detail........detail........what to include in a model?   this is a bit of detail that is rarely done,  given the scale-down between the cap rails and the pin rails.   more detail is shown to be structual,  rather that decorative.  I do agree that it would be a cool thing to do mock-ups of different aspects ........then of course, to scale it down for the build.   it is a cool bit of detail though......if you can see it,  then it should be shown

edmay reacted to nickedw in HMS Victory by nickedw - Caldercraft - 1/72nd Scale - First wooden Ship build
Like most other folks on this forum, I'm building a Caldercraft Victory.

This is my second foray into the world of ships, the first being a 1/200th Trumpy Arizona that I built by accident, seeing as somebody maliciously stuck the kit under my nose for fifty quid, so what can you do?

    Here's that one anyway:-

SO the Victory, I bought as a 'long term project' in 2007, after, I'm ashamed to say, spending a morning in Portsmouth, recovering from a very drunken stag do and finding myself getting dragged around HMS Victory. Knowing nothing at all about ships, then or now, I was blown away by the thing, and decided to resurrect my model building career by buying this kit.

The rest is history, it really did start me building models again - aircraft and after having made a start on her building the basic hull, second planking I ran out of steam after plating one side of the Hull. And got sucked back into aviation modelling again in a big way for the last six years.

So she has followed me around after two house moves in that condition until about three weeks ago, where finding some long lost time on my hands, I decided to crack on. I've got the customary few old photos of the 'excitement' of getting the most expensive kit I ever bought started:-

The early build is just like everyone else's, so I won't bore you with the same old shots.

Here is where I'm up to today:-

Thanks for looking and the warm welcome to the forum, I'm amazed how many other people are building this kit.

    Regards

    Nick

your making me wish i had a Cutty build in front of me,  you know.   it caused me to get out my Cutty build and show how Revell molded these details.   it has been in  'the hallway'  for well over a year,  waiting for me to finish her.   when I did this build,  there was so much conjecture as to her color,  I just went and painted her my way.  I am amazed with how little dust is on her......just a few ceilling putty droppings...the folks who live upstairs stomp around like animals....lucky the whloe ceilling hasn't come down!

the two rub rails along the bulwark is there.......and then the cap rails

the inner bulwark detail can be done as close as you like,  but some of the details do get lost with scale, some too small to actually do.  just getting the basic layout,  can be quite rewarding.

Revell had a hard time with the fore castle deck and windlass assembly.  they specified using multiple pieces of chain to do the windlass.  with just a couple of holes drilled into the deck.....two covered by the chain gates and the other two covered by the decking,  I cut it down to just two pieces of chain.   you had mentioned the stern and the shape of it.  Revell did a nice job of this and the way the rub rails wrap around it.  the cap rails finishes it off.

the last Cutty I did,  I included all of the sails.......I intend to do the same to this one.  the studding sails and braces still need to be done,  as well as the repairs to the rigging from the move here.  one of these days,  I'll get her back on the table

I really like Michael's "definition" for what I am doing.
    It's actually quite true.

So....I did some more "juggling the order" and decided to carve the figurehead. It's not that I don't like planking, it's just a tad monotonous compared to other tasks.

The figurehead is in 2 pieces and was hand carved from a small block of basswood. The scalpel in the photo is for size comparison.

The figurehead appears larger than it really is when dry fitted on the stem because of the angle of the photograph. (That being said - it is probably a little off scale, but I'm happy with and will leave it as is.)

Sorry to hear that you're still suffering from this. It gets hard to shake off. Yes, the Queen would be interesting. I, of course are in the same time length also on the carronades that you are, only even further out. I haven't finished the Morgan yet, and wouldn't be starting the Niagra until that is finished. Just planning ahead, and would start accumulating options as they are available so that I would be prepared once I begin. Chuck seems to just be in the planning stages at this point, and with his time constraints, this could be a while coming. I guess, this could be an excuse for a Sherline lathe and mill.....lol. Unfortunately, I used to have both, but lost them in a divorce. Check out Chuck's build log on the Winchelsea, he sent me a drawing of his proposed carronade, it is 15/16" long. I don't have a Niagra carronade handy to compare it to. He designed it for the Syrene, but I think it is the same scale. Get well Dude! No time for being down and sick.

I too share the same dilemma;  I pre-painted my lines and installed them after painting the hull underneath, in order to avoid a lot of tedious masking.
I'm not sure that was a wise idea, because they are coming loose in places, requiring me to use ca glue, which discolors the paint, which leads to sanding and repainting....  (on and on...)  I have had many run-ins with fate or bad luck, (or drunken nights )with this ship, but I repair my many mistakes as best I can and keep plugging along.  I agree that the time invested is not worth restarting the build.  I try to view the mistakes I make as inevitable "battle scars" and will be proud of the ship, no matter what the "critics" may think!
