Even in the previous picture towards the bottom it looks as if they all overlap. You can clearly see the whales above that overlapping.

So  Basically it is a smooth planking on both sides and then the whales on top of that planking. If you look in the picture that I have enclosed it looks like they all overlap.

Keith I do have a question for you though. On your planking did you overlap any? I have looked at countless pictures of the Victory and it appears that around the whales some of the planks do overlap. Or is that the whales themselves that appear to overlap the planking?

Id like to do them all open. Thats the plan now.

Keith...agreed. There are some raised edges along the edges of the ply that I want to smooth down. It will no doubt take some of the ply away....not much but will smooth the side for planking and will also leave plenty of ply for the plank to bond to.

Planked the second deck and coated it as well. Did some minor painting and test fitting. Actually used a black cherry stain instead of flat black as it calls for per the directions.

Keith your build is an inspiration. I have a few small things to do before planking which I am nervous about to say the least. I see some use filler and or blocks and some dont. Not sure my approach yet. I have not planked the lower deck as I call it. The main is just in place for fit and check. That did have to be sanded in a few places to allow the fourth plank to fit flush at the top. I have sanded that top deck back some and did have small issues with the lower three. If you look in my pictures there is a small gap in one row. As I sad in a previous post, I think I can compensate for that with the planking and placement of the lower row of guns as they are not opened up, but more just a dummy wall to mount a cannon on. I think if planned right that lower row could be moved up 1 or 2 mm and still keep the final appearance correct. If you have thoughts on planking please feel free to share or suggest.

Got a little curious.

That bottom plank somehow managed to get worked down as I strugggled with it and had to notch the plank on the lower edge...but not much. I think as we plank it I can move the gun ports up about 1mm and it wont be noticed. This should put the ports where they need to be and I don't believe it will be noticed when finished.

Just an update as to where I am with Ms. Victory here.....to say the least she is a beast by all means. Just this far has been......an experience??? Ive noticed that the deck is too wide in some spots and needs to be sanded some...other than that this has fit well. Now the planking.......I don't know anything about but I will tackle soon....maybe.

mtaylor and Keith I have looked through the logs for Victory seeing final results and Billings logs for building and have scanned through clearways build countless times. I have been to the table since I posted the last progress picture. I am hoping for some time this weekend.

Ok huge question!!! The two visible decks of the Victory...some stain...some paint. The pictures I have found show it to be a dirty white....almost light sandy brown. Opinions? Not really happy with whats provided.....

Thank you for the welcome Keith and the deep end it is! Well worth it when complete I am sure! I will consider the stairs but may pass....may not. This being my first build and all....Im not even sure where this will take me in the end. Stain...paint....still considering.

I have read through your post and viewed your photos. It does seem a monster but patience is key...and research....and help from fine folks on here it will be beautiful when complete. I do love the colors but have not decided to do post or pre colors. I need to do a lot of research. I will post each step as I go and I welcome any comments or insight from all!
