Continued some work on both ends of the ship today. On the back end I added the black rope rail around the top of the deck house. On the bow I added anchor supports, rail poles with rope to be added later, and the red and green lights on the side. I have continued to refer to the older assembly instructions provided by Arctic37. So much better than what Ravell now includes with the kit. Had an oh *^#% moment today. As some know Ravell now includes decals for the name and decorative scroll work on the bow. I definitely don’t like it as much as the molded form on other ships like the Constitution. On the Constitution I carefully painted the raised design and name with a fine point brush. On the Cutty Sark it is just a peel and stick decal that looks like a peel and stick decal. Since that is what was provided That is what I applied. Well, somehow today moving the ship around and leaning it over to touch up paint I accidentally damaged the decal. So I just sanded it off and will either try to hand paint something in that area or just leave it black. I know I can find new decals on eBay but don’t know if I really want to put decals back on it.

Continued today with mainly touch up and fine tuning my painting. Also added the wheel house. I found Artic37’s Cutty Sark build. He included the building instructions from an older production that are much more detailed and informative. In the instructions with my kit it said to paint the 8 bucket shaped objects back by the aft deckhouse brown and place them under the quarterdeck rail. Gave no name to these pieces. In the Instructions Artic37 provided they are called fire buckets and instructions say to paint red. That made more sense to me so I changed them. Also weathered the top of the two deck houses. Developing into a beautiful ship.

Just a bit more at the stern of the ship today. Also did some fine tuning of some of my paint lines to get sharper edges. Once all the deck elements are on, probably some time this week, I plan to do a little additional touch up. Have some glue spots that are showing up a bit shiny I want to touch with some matt top coat and a few little white spots on the deck where the weathering effect needs to be touched up.

Continued to work from the bow back toward the stern adding deck elements. Some of which I must admit don’t know the name of. One of the things I really liked when I built the Revell USS Constitution is that the instruction book had several pages that listed all the parts by number and name. The Cutty Sark instructions did not have that. Something I am curious about and someone may know. On the deck house in the back there are two elements that look like upside down baskets near the front. No idea what they are. The instructions had me put the compass on the back end of the house. In videos I have watched the compass is in the front where these little baskets are. One other thing I have noticed that I have to work on is my sharp edge painting. When I look with my naked eye I think my edges look pretty good. But when I take a picture and zoom in I can see a bit of fine tuning is needed. I added some weathering to the sides of the deck houses as well.

To add sails or not? What is your preference?
Bill97 replied to Bill97's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Oh no Rob. Based on some photos Bob sent me over on my Cutty Sark build log I removed the chains today and reinstalled them more accurately to the 1912 photo. Had to risk doing some deck damage doing that. Kind of scared to remove them again. Wonder if I might brush them with a little black wash? -
Thanks Bob. This helps a lot and explains it. Going to see now if I can make these changes. I currently have the chain coming out the bottom instead of over the top of the windlass 😳. Hope I have enough chain and can get it lose without doing any damage. Do you have any knowledge of the color of the roof of the two deck houses? As I mentioned, the YouTube videos I have looked at seem to show them all white.
-
Yes I have seen Sailcat’s restoration! Quit a feat to be proud of. I am still debating if to fabricate something that would give the appearance of being used to protect the forward hatch from the destruction that would have been caused by the anchor chain. Would not be authentic but as we have all said, something was probably there. Or at least I need to severely scar up the paint under the chain. Continued today along the deck adding elements and features. The instructions say to paint the top of the deck houses kind of a gray brown. However the videos I have watched of the ship museum show the tops white (I think) so I painted them matt white.

Thanks for your compliment Rob. I was kidding when I said I should just throw my Cutty Sark away. I do thoroughly enjoy building these model ships. I find very enjoyable and therapeutic, maybe. A little glass of KY bourbon, some nice background music, and my ship and I am in heaven. Doubt I will be as accomplished as you, and at 68 I guess I can only get just a little bit better. I really like your idea of experimenting with new things to improve skills. I think my Cutty Sark is coming along nicely with advice acquired from this site. I am honing my skills for my next build, the 1/100 HMS Victory, which I received as a gift and have yet to open. Planning to tackle it starting this winter after giving all I can to the CS. The instructions said to paint the roof of the little deck houses a color, but I noticed I the video of the ship museum shows them all white. So I painted them white. -

Thanks Rob. Your 20 degree recommendation and reasoning sounds perfect. Per chance I wanted to go back and add furled, handmade sails to my Constitution it would look OK and be accurate that the yards are perpendicular? -

Rob I read through page 7 of your Great Republic build. This initial part covered your hull build and ingenious copper platings. Simply incredible! I don’t know if I am worthy to even discuss model ship building with you! Probably should just throw my models in the trash and take up knitting or macrame 😊. Your skills and inventiveness are very impressive! Looking so forward to reading more of the GR build. Going to spend a little time on my Cutty Sark today, which until now I thought was kind of intense delicate work, much like my recent Construction build. But now after reading about your build this just might be child’s play! 😀 Again great job. I am sure you are proud of it, and all your models. -

Rob I found it! I bookmarked it and plan to read all the way through it. I am very early in my Cutty Sark build so it will be a while before I am ready to make my finished sails. Plenty of time to practice. Another question for you and gang, when you plan to add sails I know the yards are supposed to be turned (not sure what the correct term is) at an angle, not perpendicular to the ship. Is that amount just personal preference, or do you have a set amount you use? -

Rob I am just not having any luck finding what to click on to see your Great Republic. You said look at your sig line at the bottom of any of your comments. The photo is a screen shot of the bottom of one of your comments. What should I be seeing? -

Thanks Rob. I have searched for your build of the Great Republic but can’t find it in the quick index. Where can I find it? -
Shipman these are Bob Fraser’s drawings. It is so interesting the history of this ship. And so unfortunate that we cannot know exactly how she was at first launch. Building it now while knowing it is not an exact replica of the original design does diminish it a bit, but I hope to build a beautiful display model and keep the secret of her changes to my self. 98 percent of the people who will see my model in person will have no idea! 🙂

Thanks Bob. This is very interesting. I think 1932 was about the time the ship was sold, reconfigured, and began begin used for training purposes. Wonder the time thought that led to the anchor chains on deck. Guess we will never know. Bill

To add sails or not? What is your preference?
Bill97 replied to Bill97's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Great Rob. Thanks. From looking at the pictures and reading your instructions I think I am understanding but I do have a few clarification questions. (1) In your instructions you mention knowing the size 12~24”. Not completely sure I know what you mean there. I have the molded plastic sails that came in the kit. Could I just match the size of each of them? (2) It looks like the vertical lines across the sail are the ones you drew in. Is that correct? And for the spacing could I again mimic the lines on the plastic sails! (3) and the last question is about the edging you put around. I understand you only put it on the top and sides, not the bottom? And it also looks as if on the larger sails you have 2 horizontal strips about mid way, and one on the smaller sail. -
Good morning Shipman. I too have tried to research old pictures and data about the CS but not much. I did notice on the current videos that the anchor chain no longer comes up from below deck through the pipes. I don’t know if that is just to prevent a trip hazard for tourists or what. Wonder if those pipes were and chain route were old modifications from the original design construction? Possibly the anchor chain was originally stored, let out, and pulled back in from a lower deck. What is your thought?

Rob I printed out the above instructions you gave for making your paper sails. I have read over it a couple times and am going to practice your method before attempting to make them for my Cutty Sark. I hope you don’t mind if I from time to time ask you a question or clarification on what may seem to be simple or obvious. -
Thanks Shipman. I had the same curiosity about the anchor chain placement. Thought in actuality it would tear up everything when anchor dropped. I use this YouTube video for reference and could not find any footage of the chain on the ship.
-
Continued the build for a while today. Added a number of elements to the deck. After solving the anchor chain challenge prior to my last post, I have found the Revell instructions to be pretty clear and straight forward. The instruction book does list recommended colors with most being in the matt sheen. I have watched a number of YouTube videos of the actual Cutty Sark museum. There does seem to be a bit of shine in n a number of the structures and machinery on the deck. So I have opted to use a satin or gloss enamel on those pieces to add visual effect and contrast with the flat/matt finish of the deck.

How to get build listed in index
Bill97 replied to Bill97's topic in How to use the MSW forum - **NO MODELING CONTENT**
OK Thanks JeffT. This is the link to it. Please advise if I have done anything wrong, or failed to do a step. As I said I am fairly new to the site and am learning. -
Good morning. I am fairly new to the site. I have a few postings and discussions. I am curious how I add my new build to the Quick-Find Indexes to Build Logs from Kits? I recently started a new build of the Revell 1/96 Cutty Sark post that has had a few replies but it does not show in the quick index. I am certain it is because I need to do something with the post but don’t know what. Thanks for your great job with the site. I find it extremely helpful.
