jct reacted to Blighty in Chaperon by Blighty - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Weathered and aged - My first build log
Hi I have some updates to show, although currently only roughed in I think they are significant changes
The LED lights arrived and Rossi46 and I wired up the lower decks. There is a slight change to the layout of the lights that I posted earlier in this log but the effect dictated that these minor changes were required.
I wanted a very restful, dim illumination and the yellow LEDs did just the job, I am very pleased. I'll post night pics later when it gets dark.
Yellow lights all round, between 1,8 and 3mm DIA. The pics below show more detail than I can describe, you know what they say, A picture paints a1000 words.
Messy work bench, it got ugly, nearly pulled the chainsaw out.

A couple of pics of the wheel, still a bit of detailing to do but the washes are complete.
Now it's back to attaching battens. ZZZZzzzzzzz!

The boiler deck is now glued up, the only ware/weathering so far is at the top of the steps, I sanded the red oxide off to expose the wood. I've added the vertical support posts to starboard side and did a little weathering to the posts, more to do yet.
I moved the fencing that is shown hung on the boiler posts in the instructions to the cabin wall rear of the boiler. I did this purely for appearance, the detail of the boiler is now more exposed for viewing and the plain (little bit boring walls) are now adorned with the fence which adds a bit of interest. Spacers were added to rear surface of the fence to pull it away from the wall to make it show up better.

Just about finished the stack clearance issue, looks ok.
I also added a division wall at the back of the boiler. I imagined this would be a useful, REMOVABLE option dependant on cargo carrying requirements.
Note, the division wall is not the full width of the boiler house, it is meant to protect the cargo from the bulk of coal dust, heat etc. but maximizing the opening into the forward compartment as well as offering a solid backup for 'stuff' to be stacked against.
Could this be a real world option, if not I'll likely remove it, but if I was the boat operator I would want to maximize flexibility of cargo capacity/security.
I will not paint this panel, I'll give it the vinegar treatment, which incidently I did as a top coat on the deck, I think it stained down well.

Ken, I've been practicing different 'chalking' techniques on some scraps of wood, I think I found an easy method, the secret is subtlety of color use I think. I settled for this:-)
In fact, I am so pleased with the results, I'm going to redo the hull.
The devil is in the detail!!! Great tip Ken.

Ken,
What a great pic you sent, that is the exact look I'm looking for, been round the block a few times. I will definitely attempt to add the chalking details, I think it looks great. That will be quite a bit later as I plan to go round the bottom deck to the level I have then add more detail on another lap and likely finish it off with one more go round. Most of the weathering will be on the lower level, the next deck will be in better shape as you would expect.
Thx so much for digging the pic out.
I have a couple more updates to show. They are still incomplete but I think the intent is plain to see.
Coal bunkers roughed in, still looking for mini coal piles!!!
Some detail added to the wall shown earlier.
The bundles of paper (or whatever) are the remains of the boilers I was going to detail.
Thx to all for following.

Hi, a couple of updates, I am working my along the SB side, have the first wash applied, then a thin coat of white that still shows the wash. In the inside corner I applied a heavy coat of white because I figured there would be little ware in the corner.
Pics 1 and 2 show the panels at the back, just detail to add and a final wash to make it match the Chaperon panel.
Last pic shows status of frt of cabins and the stairrail. Non of these panels are glued to deck.

I felt terrible running the edge of a folded 220 sandpaper sheet through that lettering :(

If you're going to weather her that heavily, you might consider adding a "mud stripe" such that the bottom 1/2-2/3 of the hull are consistently stained darker, to mimic the effects of river water. It would be a more realistic look than random weathered spots.Just a thought, you can certainly decide what looks best to you!

I've started to construct the boiler asm and found a use for the meet tenderizer. I beat up the surface of what will be the ash pan to simulate a layer of ash, I've also added a coat of black paint to see if the effect is any good. Should work ok. Note I extended the front edge of the pan to show a little bit more. I will trim off the extra length when I've finished painting it. It gives me something to hold on too.

a little brass here and there will make a big difference...should accent them quite well you'll do all that when you rig them to the deck. do a search on this vessel {and others like it}.......it will give you so many ideas
it's those little extras, that will make it your own

Hi Mike,
Just found your log, I think you're doing fine for your first time out...I also struggled with the plans and the stern fillers, that coupled with breaking timber heads is what has my Niagara build on hiatus...keep up the good work

Hey Denis...making fine head way I see, a quick question in your last post you mentioned working the stbd side then moving to port...any specific reason for this? I usually work plank by plank one side then the other? Is there any advantage to working up one full side?
THX

Hey Denis...if the interior of the boats is the only thing that is not correct you could always just scratch a tarpaulin for the ones on ht davits...that is unless you wish to detail the insides

Thank you again sir...that's another reason I transfer measurements whenever i can, used to have better than 20/20 and now at times I feel like Mr. Magoo They turned out ok, I'm hoping to add a bit more detail to the carriages further on, may make some little accessories to accompany them too, ramers and the like. Thanks again

very true.........I'm so spoiled with the larger kits........it's nice not to have need to use the smaller lines on the ruler {I have one now that's frying my eggs}.
carriages look good......I like that effect you've done to them. structures look sweet too

Thanks Popeye...the small scale is a challenge, but you can display more ships in a limited space I think it's kinda neat to see how much detail you can pack in...used to have a lot of fun with ho scale armor in plastic...teenie tiny dioramas.
A few more pics:
I painted the gun carriages a dark sea gray, influenced by some colorized pics I'd seen on line from the era, but they look a little dead and flat
so I decided I try a little dry brush on them to see if they'd pop a bit
here they are with the barrels set up
Spent a little time painting out the hatchways and skylights...still have to make the "windows"
Well that's it for now....thanks for your time and attention

after finishing the pilot house I set about to complete the other hatchways and skylights...before that I decided to blacken the supplied hardware that would require it, some of the brittena metal parts took it very well but not others...not sure why that would be,
also added the sponsons to the main deck
the paddle wheels were also completed, the metal was blackened and the woods paddles stained a dark brown, these were really fiddly...
using calipers the dimensions were transferred from the plans to basswood sheet to make the little odds and ends that made up the skylights/hatchways, I find this an easier method than measuring
next steps will be to make the skylights and glaze and bar them but that's all for now, thanks for looking in

The Pilot House project has come to a satisfactory finish...least its good enough for me...
The aforementioned screen was glued in from the bottom
Microscale Kristal Klear was applied to the windows to simulate glass
The finished Pilot House...
...still needs to have a coat of sealer applied and the roof detailed and painted, as you can see I went with the traditional white...the ivory I planned to use was bit to yellow for my taste. I'm currently debating whether to weather lightly or not...
Well that's all for now... thanks for looking in
