This is a "raw" deadeye, attached to its' "rod" (still called a chainplate, I'm assuming) and set next to two "iron strops" that will be painted white to surround the deadeye, which will be painted black. I'm gearing up for mass production of theses strops, simulated with aluminum from beer cans. I'll need around 70.

As promised; I did a little deadeye work.... This is a picture of the starboard main deadeyes, in their rail.. The deadeyes, and thier strops, are raw, unpainted, and undetailed. This is just to show their orientation to the rest of the ship. Also, the last three smaller deadeyes are not installed, as I am trying to find a happy medium with their tiny chain plates. I spent a heck of a lot of time to place the holes to angle these things as the shrouds would be naturally so I hope all this works... Best always, Bob

Nothing at all is glued yet; ( with the exception of the multi-piece stem, which I treat now as one piece). The first half of the keel is shown with my bulkhead progress; X thru B. Note that the bulkheads are not precisely cut; the dark black lines show where the planking will flow. These lines I will use to fair the frames, when the time comes. This assembly actually is sitting on the marked board that will be the second half of the keel.

Ok... After following Nenad's fine work on the outside of the CS, and Chris' fine work on the deadeyes, I am starting to get a little fired up for working on my Cutty. (I've also run out of printer ink, plywood, and glue sticks; all essential for my Victory build at this time..) Nenad; I guess I like jumping around these builds because of all the different aspects... I was getting tired of doing fine detailing on the Cutty, so I went with the more crude and "meaty" job of cutting out the Vic's bulkheads. When I get the planking urge, I'll probably jump over to the Niagara... But now, I'm thinking deadeye work on the Cutty is next in line.... (rudder is still not finished, but it can wait)

Your progress with this part of the build is wonderful. I usually have no problem with scaling issues, structural components, etc. but when it comes to artistic embellishments I am completely clueless... Great work! ~Bob- 4,152 replies

Hello, Nenad; Impressive work on the Star of India! It looks great, and I may have to imitate your work... Cute kitty... Cats have always been my favorite pets, but I have birds now; and curious cats can wreak havoc upon ship models... Best wishes, Bob- 4,152 replies

And there is no mess. Only You see the mess that your mind makes; we only see the wonderful work you have done to this fine ship. I could start a new build log showing all the "messes" I have made...- 4,152 replies

Ok... I've abandoned most references to Caldercraft, and am going for the AOTS. This build, marked as a 1:78 kit, is all over the place. The bower anchors are actually 1:96; The carronades are pretty close; but the long guns are an even smaller scale. Doing the math; I am now making a scratch-built 1:81.5 HMS Victory. I will fit the fittings as I see fit; and hopefully not have a fit about it..

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
