Superb work Jim. I love the detail and the 'atmosphere' you instill in your work. I particularly appreciate your depiction of Bucklers Hard - one of my most favorite places in the New Forest.
    Thank's for sharing them.

Thank you all for your comments.
Last year I was fortunate to be invited, along with my wife, to take part in 'Dervish75’ the celebrations commemorating the arrival of the first Convoy to Russia. We were part of a group of WW2 convoy veterans and their carers ( the Vets were all in their 90s) flown up to Arkhangelsk where we took part in various events in memory of those who were lost during the what Winston Churchill called 'The Worst Journey On Earth.'  We then moved on to St Petersburg and Kronstadt for more of the same. We shared all of these events and receptions at various consulates and embassies with our Russian hosts. We made many friends and shared lots of memories as sailors do, helped along of course with copious supplies of Vodka. A year before the trip I had been asked if I had any paintings of convoys that could be used as a small exhibition during the event. However this snowballed into 50 of my paintings being made up into a book ( printed in Moscow) 250 copies were printed and were given free to the veterans, VIPs, museums, schools and anyone who provided assistance to the venture. Each year reciprocal visits take place between Vets from Russia and UK and other allies.  Efforts are being made to continue these international visits after the original veterans are gone.
Our governments may have 'frosty' relationships, but at the grass roots I know our Russian friends had exactly the same hopes and fears we have. We both want to get on with living life in peace and happiness.

If you only want it for small drills and other rotary jobs then a 'Dremel' is most people's default.

The main question would be how big or how small the holes would be, you want to drill. Down to 0,5 mm this is not a very big issue, but below that the run-out of the drill-spindle and the chuck/collets become a crucial variable in your considerations.

I gather, if you are based in continental Europe, as your first name might suggest, you may want to look into PROXXON-products, for both hand-held and bench-drills. Have intensively used their bench-drill for the last 35 or so years (I must admit, after a lot of abuse due to oversize work etc., now the bearings aren't the best anymore). All PROXXON-drills can be used either with a drill-chuck or collets. In general, I prefer the latter, as they are smaller and have a smaller run-out.

I never had any of the fancy Dremel or PROXXON hand-drills. Bought a simple DC electric motor in aluminium tube and with a collet attachment that is still alive and well after 40 years of heavy (ab)use. Again, I think steel collets are preferable over drill-chucks.

For a hand-held drill I would try out how it feels in your hand - diameter/balance. The rest is not so important.

Welcome to MSW Angel!  You do very fine work, something to be proud of.  Ever thought of selling your models?  I have sold almost all of the ships that I have made.  I seldom made much more than the price of the kits but display space is limited and it was usually enough for me to afford the next model, so it was like getting it for free.  To me the object was just to have the fun of building them, not to keep them on a shelf.  (Our watch bird doesn't seem much interested in them anyway.)

Impressive work! Unfortunately I can not undertake certain projects. In my country I am considered as a blind man (I am retired therefore).
I still have some visual acuity, but I can't do certain things. It is life!

I'm going to show you my ships :), and hope to continue with this hobby for a long time.
First, the Swift (Artesanía Latina) made in 1999
Next, The San Francisco (Artesanía Latina) Begun in 2000 and finished in 2016. The work and family have kept the project frozen for 14 years
Next, Boat Captain Nelson from the Agamemnon, (Disarmodel) Made at the end of 2016.
The last, this arabian sambuk from Corel, finished recently.
Now making the boat of the San Juan Nepomuceno (Artesanía Latina), and preparing the Roar Ege from Billing Boats.
    Its all

Hi, I saw article on Mystic Seaport and saw model of SY IOLANDA. There is also a model at New York Yacht Club. I am the grandson of the owner of the ship who bought it from Morton in 1910 and am looking to obtain a model of the IOLANDA to include in our family Museum. I seek any modeler professional or amateur to undertake such a mission hopefully using the Mystic model as a base because the NY Club has been less than cooperative. Please contact me to discuss costs and details that might be pertinent.

    Hi I'm a new member.

I built a couple of Billings models when l was younger, one with the help of my father.
About the time I married I started building a Dikar model of the Roger B Taney, but when we moved to our 2nd house, driven by birth of our second child the model got put away and left untouched for 30 years.

My kids are out of the house now and I'm retiring at the end of the year. I looked for and found the kit and was rummaging through it, thought it was probably time I returned to it. In my rummaging trying to figure out what step I had left off I had questions. Thinking google might be able to help I stumbled on your site and decided to sign myself up.

My question. Does anyone out there have a set of instructions that include figure 29 and 29a that shows you how to assemble the deck house. They seem to have referenced these figures in my instruction set but neglected to actually include them. Can anyone help me out?

Hello Cooey, and a warm welcome to MSW.

If no-one can help with the instructions, perhaps when you start a build log you could post some photos of the parts.  I'm sure some of our kit builders would be able to offer helpful suggestions.

Welcome to MSW! Good to have you with us. As suggested already, start up a build log and post some pictures of where you are at and of what the finished piece looks like if it is shown well on the box. We have many experienced builders that might have built her or are good with scratch building that might be able to give you some tips to create it.

You only started the log 4 days ago.  Be patient, it takes time for build logs to develop a following.  Not everyone checks the forum every day, and many people don't look for new logs on a regular basis as there are just so many going on.  I clicked on this one because I actually love this ship and plan to build it myself some day, and I know there are a few other logs going on, so I don't think it is an unpopular ship at all.

In any case, looks like you have a good start, and I'll try to check in once in a while to watch the progress, but my time has been quite limited recently, so no guarantees!

Have fun building her, she's got fantastic lines.  I use the PoB II as my desktop background on my PC.
