HIPEXEC got a reaction from augie in USS Constitution by Hipexec - FINISHED - Constructo - 1:82
I started framing the upper gunports the old fashion way. A mitre box and eyeball sanding the ends. Very tedious! I just ordered a Micro-Mark "Sand-it" which looks like will give me furniture finish cuts that will fit nice and tight. Augie gave me the tip, so thank you Augie.

At about this time based on my picture dates I meet my Future Admiral (FA). As sometimes happens a new relationship takes over your life, I finally finished planking the hull in August of 2012.
Wales were next
Then gunports
Final installation of the scuppers
Finally some stain

]Robbyn, Thank you!!
I lined the gun ports with Box wood. I did the stiles; the vertical pieces firs,t and then the rails second. I am not sure if the cabinet terms for the parts follow ship building or not but that is what I called them. I was having trouble keeping them paralell and tight to the hull sides so I "stole" a trick I learned at work: two apposing wedges. If you have access to a miter saw and a 2-3" wide piece of wood or MDF which is what I used, several inches long (like 12" or more, gotta be safe ya know) Set your miter to 2-3 degrees, the actual angle is not important. Cut a sliver off and discard it. Then flip you pice over and cut another sliver of and save that piece. Continue flipping and cutting till you have a dozen or so pieces. You can appose these wedges to use as a clamp.
Hope this helps.

Gunwales are complete. Now I have to carefully file and sand the excess wood and glue off. Next, I'll skip way ahead and install the frames on the upper gunports for added support so I don't break them while adding deck trim, bow stems and rudder post, aft cabin windows and stern windows. Then I'll install the top rails.

Hello all,
Finally an update, it was long overdue.
The railings and the grating at the bow section are in place. They just need a little touching up and staining.
Now I can really see where I made the mistakes. Before placing the railings I wish I had thought of using a template to get the right angles/roundings like J. (JCT) did on his Half Moon.
But that is water under the bridge and something to keep in mind for future reference.
The rudder is also in place.
Tomorrow it is time to start shaping the masts and spars.
Thanks for watching.

HIPEXEC reacted to cookster in USF Constitution by cookster - Model Shipways - kitbashed to 1812
Well, it's been awhile since I posted, I've had many things to deal with lately that have kept me out of the shipyard. Even my scratchbuild of Essex is suffering, but at least on that one I have been working on my drawings.
On Conny I have been adding deck planking slowly whenever i had time. I actually had forgotten where I was when I last posted so there's been more progress than I thought, although it is slow going.
With that said, pics of current progress

She's looking good Rich! One tip on the broken pieces of planking, if you take the broken piece and put it back on where it came from, it should fit with virtually no gap since it split/broke with the grain - as long as you don't attempt to sand or dress the broken edge(s). A little glue and you should be good to go for an almost invisible repair.
Good luck!

Framing corners are a 'Modified Trussben' design. Get some close-ups down the road. Right now doing hand to hand combat with the garboards. They're in!
Should finish 2nd belt this week .... more snow heading in.

Rich,
I understand what you mean about the pre cut gun ports
I have to do the same with the Aggy but I find out when you marked the gun ports correctly, you can use a small file to sand the ports to the pencil line....
I have to see if that's working for me also.

Sjors,
Yes, I pre-cut the planks to make the gun ports because I don't like my skills at cutting into the hull and still have straight and perpendicular holes. Here's a picture of the port side with full planks. There's only a small support plank to fit on the inside until I add the rails much later. I'll have to be careful handling the hull until all rails and trim is in place since these upper ports have no top support yet.

HIPEXEC got a reaction from mtaylor in First build advice on planking
First of all, you should know that planking is hard and tedious. Each plank must be treated like a separate model since each plank sits differently on the hull. Planks must be shaped, bent, twisted, tapered, beveled, cut, etc. However, when you finally plank your hull, you will feel like a million dollars. The tutorials on this website are very good. So is the advise you will get from members. Pretty soon you will be inventing your own methods that suit your talents.
Good luck.

Port & starboard second course gunwalls complete. Pre-cutting going great with minimum need for filling. All ports seem very square. better than me cutting them out.

Looks like a good idea with the pre-cutting. I always panic about breaking out the power saws to cut into the ship!

Port & Starboard gunwalls and gunports have been started. I cleaned all the measurement markings off the deck. Now, I'll continue upward.

Starboard side, next course up is finished. The kit called for me to set all the planks for the gunwales in place, then cut or saw the gun ports. I experimented with my blades, mini saws, etc and it was a mess. I decide to go up by pre-cutting the planks with nice, clean, right angle cuts using my plank cutter, and put each piece in it's place that I pre-measured. So far so good. It will just take some minor filling and sanding/filing. to make the upper planks as smooth as the lower planks.

HIPEXEC got a reaction from flying_dutchman2 in Preferred support when planking?
I built foam rubber cradles out of swim noodles with a broom handle it the center hole to cradle the hull in all its crazy angles during planking. There's a picture of them on my build log. I use three of them, but remove the center one when I want a perfectly upright model. I use all three when I want it upside down laying on her deck. Someone thought they looked like rolling pins from my wife's kitchen. They gave me ( and continue to give me) a soft, well supported system no matter what angle I'm working on. When I start the topside and rigging, I'll make something more sturdy.
