Thank you very much for your kind words Bill, Pete, Ferit, Jason and Hamilton.

Jason I think styrene is a good alternative to simulate wooden frames.
By the way I didn‘t use the provided paper. I‘ve bought a sheet of black cardboard with a higher paper weight and used it instead.

Hamilton I‘m very happy with the result and all the rest is hidden by the colour.

    So thanks again, guys.

That's a very nice little boat, Hamilton. I think the traditional construction technique is the best.

At last the ship's boats have been completed. Believe me, it was a real challenge.

First of all the boat's resin hulls should have been sanded. Otherwise you can have big problems when glueing the cartridge paper for the ribs into the hull. My big awareness...

But the rest was quite easy.

Well, the lauch is very tall and I'll don't fit it until the rigging has been completed.

Swivel guns are placed on the board, so I decided to finally finish galion. The result does not look bad, although does not reflect reality.

Richard, your boats look great.  Its funny, I had exactly the same experience even after sanding the hull.  I've ordered some styrene to do what the paper should because I was also thinking the paper may not have enough body to simulate the frames.  You made a very nice job of it however and I'm reconsidering my approach,  I'm curious what your thoughts are on the merits either way.

The ship's boats look amazing - it must have been very tricky using the paper for the ribs! I just finished a ship's boat at 1:100 and used 1/16 x 1/16 lime sanded down after installation to 1/32...this was fiddly enough - I can't imagine using the paper to the same high quality result you've obtained!

    Thanks for the comment, Bob.

Well, after sanding, filling and sanding the hull I started with the second planking. The walnut stripes are quite rough and brittle, so I must be very careful.

So I have the Pulpit/Pulpit rail completed except for nut & bolt details, waiting for them to arrive.

I made all the rail brackets and pulpit strapping from 1/64" thick styrene sheet which I cut to the appropriate width. Once the brass handrail was attached, it was time to wrap it with thread to match the actual boat. This was done by wrapping it twice, once nice and tight and then the secondary looser, with spacing between each wrap. I used thinned PVA to set it and superglued the ends so I wouldn't have to worry about it coming loose.

I also attached a screen grab from the movie which is a close up of the handrail to show what I was trying to achieve, not the best quality, but it's something.

This model is of the boat as when it was in the movie, so the bends and tweaks in the hand rail are supposed to be there for the used/weathered appearance.

Despite the birthday distractions I have made some progress on the build. After careful study of the V de V engraving it became apparent to me that the prow cheeks are not faceted as depicted on most models, but in my opinion are flat.I came to this conclusion because the vertical carvings run down in a straight line when viewed at an angle. This made life a whole lot easier.I developed the shape to match the engraving but also to match the proportions of my build.I cut the pieces out of 0.8mm ply and made formers to hold the pieces to the correct curve. When it came to planking the cheeks I had originally planned on horizontal planking, however being faced with a 3D structure that I believe must be close to that of the original,it didn't ring true.I realise the planking on Vasa's prow runs inline(nearest thing in existance, thanks Matti for your wonderful pics)but whilst the two look similar, they are quite different. The way I saw it was that you have four very large structural timbers running inline close to one another, then it made sense that the planking infil would join these together.
therefore I chose to plank the inside faces vertically with boxwood. These have been treenailed and epoxied in position. The outside faces should be planked tomorrow with black boxwood.
    Kind Regards Nigel

Looking good Richard, good idea to paint the masts yellow, wish I did the same on my pickle rather than the walnut stain they reccomend. Same with painting the carronades red. looks neater and more even

I made the Pulpit Rail out 3/64" brass rod. It's been super glued together, think it hold up the best this way. Still need to build the brackets to mount it to the pulpit and deck.

Once finished it will be painted and wrapped with thread to duplicate what was on the actual boat, here's a quick sample I did to make sure I was going to like the final result.
