marktiedens got a reaction from Bob Cleek in Are those electric plank benders worth it?
I have been using this electric plank bender for many years. It was made by Aeropiccola. It is basically a 50 watt soldering iron with a head shaped like a comma & an adjustable clamp so you can make the bend as tight as you need to.

After adding the tack lines for the fore & main sails I`m calling this one done.   The kit does include a ship`s boat kit,but I have decided to not build it.
Thanks to all that have followed along.  I will add some pictures to the gallery soon. I`m not sure what I will build next - would love to do Chuck`s  Winchelsea, but I don`t have a hobby size table saw to cut planks & can`t really afford to spend hundreds of $$ for one right now.

Update - all 10 swivel guns mounted, along with the stern lantern, flag pole, & anchors. Was not able to shape the flags well as they are stiff as a board.

Another update - the mizzen lateen yard is now in place & the sail rigged. The kit provided black beads for the parrels, but I decided to use some bronze colored ones from the bead store.  The main topgallant backstays are now done also - I had to wait until now to do all the topgallant backstays so I could get my hands in to the belaying points for all the other lines.

Hello friends!  Haven`t posted in a while - did some remodeling, cleaned out & got my mother`s house sold, then a few unfortunate things happened(Murphy`s Law has been following me around)......    I have got a couple of things done - made a bunch of rope coils,& got the fore topmast & topgallant yard braces done. Those braces were shown on the belaying plan to  belay BEHIND the main lower sail but that is not possible with the mainsail in place,so I belayed them to the railing at the rear of the forecastle deck.  Also got the fore topgallant backstays done. I hope to get back to work on this more regularly very soon.  As always, thanks for looking in.

Hi everyone.  Progress has been slow, but I have got the fore & main sails rigged(except for the tacks).  The mizzen topsail is done also. Now I need to make a bunch of rope coils to hang on the belaying points before adding the lateen yard due to space to get my hands in getting limited . Thanks for looking in.

update - topmast sails almost done.  Main & fore sails started.  Getting hard to get my hands in around the belaying points - my next ship will not have sails!

Hi everyone.  Haven`t posted for a while due to being tied up with house stuff.  I have, however, got the topgallant yards & sails rigged along with attaching the topmast yards. Not perfect, but I think it passes the galloping horse test.  Thanks for looking in!

Hello again fellow modelers - time for a little update.  3 sails are now on & rigged.  I ended up using some fine brass wire inserted into the side seams to help shape the sails.  Rope coils are being added as I go also.  The boomkins were also added to the bow knightheads with their support ropes.  Another issue is the flags - although very nicely printed, they are printed on some kind of heavy cloth with an adhesive on the back . They are meant to cut out & folded together, but the adhesive was no longer sticky. So I glued them with some fabric adhesive which made them stiff as a board!  I couldn`t get them shaped at all like I wanted,so they will be flying straight out.

Moving along, all the sails are now attached to the yards.  All the sails were pre-made,although without bolt ropes. I decided not to add them since the cloth they used is grossly out of scale & I didn`t want to spend hours & hours sewing ropes to crappy sails.  The foresail is shown below as an example.  Also, the studding sail booms were put in place along with all the blocks for the sail lines.  I formed curves in the sails & coated them with spray starch - will see how they look after being rigged.   I had thought about making new sails, but 1 - I don`t have a sewing machine & 2 - I don`t know how to sew if I had one!

Hi - a little more progress..  All the rest of the stays & backstays are now done except for the topgallant backstays - they will be added later(very little room to get my hands in to do some of the yard rigging if I do them now).   Also added the railings on the tops - almost forgot about them.   Just about time to fasten the sails to the yards - this will be an adventure since I haven`t done sails for about 20 years.  Thanks everyone for looking in!

Thanks OC - I found a method to make them in someone`s log(can`t remember who at the moment, but many thanks to him).  The illustration shows to use 12 turns of rope, but I thought that was too many for my application,so I used 8 turns of .5mm black thread. I also used thinned white glue instead of super glue to keep the ropes from loosening or sliding down.  This method is the best I have found & really works well. You may be able to find this by typing "wooldings" into the search box.

Well, for what it`s worth here`s what I did on mine.

This was built about 20 years ago so it is probably incorrect. I built it with the bowsprit centered. I put the 4 false guns in the upper openings & put lids on the lower 4. After looking at mine it doesn`t seem right - I don`t know how they would fire the lower guns without hitting the planking that curves around the front . I was pretty much a novice then so I just built it to look like the picture on the box.

Hi Phil - If you contact piratepete007 he can answer any question you have about Euromodel.  He writes the building instructions for their kits & is a member of this forum. He was extremely helpful to me when I was building the Royal William.  I can tell you the Euromodel plans are probably the best you will find - very accurate & well detailed.  I have not dealt with Euromodel directly, but I believe they are a quality company that cares about their customers & would not hesitate to buy from them.

Hi everyone - I have had this kit in the closet for quite awhile from Model Expo,so now is a good time to start it. After doing a little searching on the internet, this appears to be an actual ship - a Manila galleon of 50 guns that sank in 1750. The kit came in 6 boxes & upon opening the boxes there a number of laser cut wood sheets(mostly plywood) along with several plastic containers containing fittings & other small pieces. There are also the usual bundles of strip wood & dowels. Some of the wood will likely be replaced since much of it is a coarse grained reddish brown wood. One nice feature is it comes with pre-sewn sails ready to mount(no excuse for not putting sails on this one). It builds into a ship just over 1100mm long,so it shouldn`t be too hard to add some detail.it comes with written & pictorial instructions, but the only plan sheets provided are for the masting & rigging - none for the actual ship structures(not really needed because of the many pictures.
