Seems the Syren is a very popular first time build. It was my first one also. Good luck, the kit is very comprehensive and well designed. Mr Passero really does a good job of explaining the process. The only problem I ran into was not knowing the terminology. Had to read another book to find out what a jibboom was.

Starting a new build now. Decided to start the Anteo as I was given this kit from the daughter of one of our crew mates that has past to calmer seas and is now in the hands of Christ. She asked to send her some pics once its done, so I am compelled to get it going and finished quickly. I have decided to make it an RC model capable, just in case I want to incorporate the components later. That will be new to me also. I have finished the frame and underlying structural components, and planked the frame. I am now working on the deck. The kit is an original Italian version and the instructions are limited and confusing. I am relying on the several threads from other modelers who have completed this build. If anyone has an electronic copy of one of the later versions, I would appreciate any help. Anyway, away we go!

I was wondering if you should overlap the seams on the 2nd layer. After reading this thread, I haven't seen any reason to do that. I am building an RC model with double planking and thought that it was for strength, but that would be the best reason to do that. The hull will be painted with Gelcoat, (same as a full size boat would be).

Well, it took a little time, but I have all the standing rigging done. Moving on to the yards, running rigging and finishing touches.

Started this build over 3 years ago. First time building a wooden model so I had to learn a lot of lessons. Plans are very comprehensive and the accompanying book was quite helpful. Got the hull and decking done about a year ago, then put it on the shelf for awhile. Started back up 8 months ago and now working consistently. Really didn't know what I was doing, so relied on the book and plans to get this far. Still have many questions. I am on the standing rigging now, but almost done with the lower main and fore mast. Would love any feedback provided.

Hello all, I just discovered this site from a newsletter put out by Rocky Mountain Shipwrights in Colorado. I recently joined this group and many members have recommended this site. I am a first-time ship model builder, but have been building models of various types for most of my life. I chose the US Brig Syren as my first build, from Model Shipways. I looked at the description and the instruction info on the website and felt it was something I could do. I am also a amateur woodworker, so that has helped a lot with the build. While many of the skills are new to me, I have a basic understanding of how to build things. I have actually built a small wooden rowboat in my shop. Started this project about 2.5 years ago, and got a little sidetracked when I finally retired for good and started working in my shop everyday. I have been back to building the model pretty consistently for the last 6 months. Using only the model instruction sheets, I have gotten this far. I only recently discovered all these resources available. I enjoy figuring things out for myself, but really appreciate the info on sites like this. Looking forward to seeing and reading about other people's projects and solutions.

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
