Work is continuing at a good pace on the back and mainstays and I think I have the end of the standing rigging in sight! Just a couple more backstays for the top masts to complete and then I need to fit the two top gallant masts. I already have the main top gallant prepared, I will just need to repeat for the fore top gallant. After that, add in a pair of backstays for each and the main stay.

I'll update with photos once complete. Hopefully with a bit of hard work, this will be done by the weekend.

Then it's onto the crazy fun of working out all of the running rigging diagrams..........

    Hi Guys,

Thank you all for your very kind comments and remarks, also for all whom hit the like button, it is really appreciated.

It's been a while since I last posted and progress has been very slow, whilst my other project has gathered a bit of pace but even that isn't going as quickly as I would have liked.

I do however have a bit of good news, I have had two of my builds accepted for display in our local Maritime Museum. They really just concentrate on local history so both builds fit in nicely.

They are the Bomb Vessel Granado which was build in Ipswich and then fitted out in Harwich, the other was the Thames Barge Edme, she was commissioned by the Malt Factory back in 1896 and build by a local yard in Harwich.

It's only a small museum, it's housed in a Lighthouse in old Harwich Town.

With regard to the progress on Aggy, the snaking is all complete and I have finished the Crowsfeet on all three masts. I have also redone the timberheads either side of the Bowsprit and fitted the seats of ease.

    Pictures will follow soon.

Finished up making the wire strops for the top deadeys, usual pins and excess wood making up the jig.  Went with a slightly shorter version than my first mock up as some hooks from a 'Badger' photo-etch kit I'd ordered last year were used (unfortunately none of the supplied PE strops fitted the 3mm deadeyes).  Once bent a spot of CA was used to close any remaining gaps and a coat of paint applied.  These were then epoxied into the tops so the top mast shroud tensions don't cause any knock-on complications.  Completed one set of futtock shrouds to see if everything would work OK before continuing, and pretty happy with the results.

Given that I'm planning on taking Snake to the Connecticut model ship show, I'm only going to finish up the other futtock shrouds and various small repair/touch-up jobs for now.  Am planning to start on the various spars once thats complete and get these finished before installing any of the top and topgallant masts as these would be an accident waiting to happen I suspect.

I am now finally back ahead of where I was before the great disaster of 2013....!

Spent a while last night drilling out the centre of my mounting pedestals and corresponding holes in my mounting board. Two guide holes through the keel of the ship, and a couple of long screws were fed through the bottom of the base, up through the pillars and into the keel of the ship. It is all nice and solidly mounted.

Progress made on backstays for the fore top mast. There are three on each side, each of which is slightly different. Finished the three on starboard side. Just need to finish one final backstay on the port and then it is on to the main mast.

Outboard view of the backstays showing the three different types.

Inboard view showing the belaying of two of the backstays. Eventually, I will add coils to each of the belaying points to finish.

Photo Time.. WooHoo  (I know I know, I really spoil ye..  )

The Stern Post is in place, and the Hull is pretty much finished with sanding (it might get the odd gentle rub as I progress though)

You can see the Hawse Hole (where the Anchor Rope would go through the hull) re-enforcing I put in place, it isn't called for in the 'Plans' but I kinda figured it to be an area that would have been built up to combat wear 'n tear ! it hasn't been fully shaped & filed totally smooth yet .

The Wales are made from  2@  3 x 1 mm Beech lengths I had in stock, and will ultimately be painted black. The wale hasn't been shaped properly at the stern yet, but isn't too far off (possibly a little filling required at the very after-most part to blend it into the transom)

See I haven't been slacking off.. much..

Glad to see you back (and indeed ahead) of where you were before the bowling ball 'Cat'astrophe !
Snake looks amazing.. she is really coming along, I know most people hate rigging but it is the thing that always seems to bring a ship alive.

I've always liked those pedestal type stands, they seem to look very 'clean', much less fussy than the standard support that comes with kits.

Ferit, Eamon, B.E., Timmo - cheers guys!

Still proceeding at a snails pace.  Following picture for the benefit of other Snake builders.  The block on the foremast for the maintopmast preventer stay could very easily interfere with catharpins on foremast shrouds, felt a bit lucky that I didn't run afoul of this, the positioning of the futtock stave is important as the block couldn't move any higher because of the mast cheeks.  One more catharpin to go on foremast (which I'm remaking again because it didn't fit....)

I'm officially awarding myself 'Muppet of the Week'.....!

Busy adding backstays to the fore top mast. Had gone through the process of seizing a loop around the mast, and spent a while tying a series of half hitches to perform the seizing. Just need to trim off the short length of thread forming the back stay to leave the seizing and the main length of stay. However, like a halfwit I proceeded to snip the wrong thread and chopped of the long length of the actual back stay itself. DOH!

Cue muttering and slightly blue self depreciation.

Whilst I only lost 10 minutes of actual work, it was the sheer basic stupidity of the error that stood out.....

    Hi,

The fore and main mast stays have now been fully refitted and lanyards added and frapped. Glad I made the decision to go back and redo all of these. The tension in the stays is far better and the frapped lanyards look much nicer than my original attempt.

Now working on the backstays for the foremast.....

Hi All.. Photo as Promised are below..

Have Completed 1st Sanding Phase and discovered a small few 'Dips' in the planking, due it would seem to slight Inconsistencies in the 1mm thick planks, will have to watch out for this in future! tis no biggie though as I've plenty of Filler in reserve!!
2nd Sanding wont be happening until Sunday at best due to work, but it will give me occasion to examine those 'dips' more closely and open my Filler Warehouse..
The Gun Ports have been filed out a little accurately more but there is 1mm or so to go, I want to complete inner bulwark planking before finishing them properly. The First & Last Ports are to be cut to the Cap Rail too.
I have Angled Files coming in the post as we speak and hopefully they will arrive just before my timber order for the deck (I need to file down the Bulkhead Spurs which I removed a few days ago before addressing the deck.. have to get the Order of things sorted too re Spirketting, edge of Deck Planks, Painting etc. before going too far)

BTW Contrary to appearance in photos the hull is exceeding smooth, even at this stage.. Honestly !!

If it's the triangular hole you're referring to, all I've done is to plank upto the penultimate bulkhead. My experience from planking Snake is that it makes planking the transom and the subsequent 2nd planking easier.

    Hi Stergios,

I've just used some matt varnish for the ladders. Thinking about touching up the visible layers of the ply with some walnut coloured paint.

A lot of the other deck fittings were painted red ochre.

Been a little while since the last update.

Busy with all sorts (including Ballahoo!) but I have my partner moving in currently so the house is a huge state of flux at the moment.

Finally got round to removing the main and fore stays for refitting. Used the serving machine in anger for the first time, and after a little playing around got the technique sorted in my head. Made an estimate of 15cm of line to be served to give the loop around the mast, the mouse and a little further down the stay. Made the mouse in the end by simply serving back and forth over a 1cm length of line favouring one end to give the correct shape. A couple of dabs of GS Hypo to secure and sorted.

Added the heart blocks to end of the stay, and many thanks to Gil Middletons build, with a false splice. The technique takes a little while but gives a really good tidy result. Almost want to redo all my shrouds, almost.....!

Added the lanyards between the two heart blocks and frapped. This looks far better than my old lanyards.

    Only three more to go....

The last photo shows the improved splice for the upper heart block and the old method for the lower. Should have replaced the lower before frapping but I think I can replace in situ.
