Time for an update and the celebration of a milestone. We've reached 1,000 hours into the build !
The planking of the quarter deck has been completed and some of the details (speaking tube, mizzen rail) added. The deck is planked only to the midline to allow some of the gun deck and great cabin work to be seen:
The planking is, of course, Swiss Pear and the treesnails done with the 'drill and fill' method The finish is Natural stain under WOP. I'll provide some more detailed photos as the final details are added.

Sjors reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Thanks for the likes and comments.
Dan,
I'm absorbing all I can.... Your post is big help. I rechecked the Belle Poule and La Venus monographs as they have the same planking style as Licorne. The pics show the re-positioned (this morning) batten. Not much from the red pin back but definitely moreso at the bow.
My dead flat and the widest frame is frame 20 (black arrow in full length picture below). The batten at that point is 41 mm which is 8 planks wide. I examined the planking schemes and did some rough measurements from the plans and moved the bow piece towards the wale. This flattened the plank out so there's not a nasty twist/bend in it. It's 17.5 mm. I measured the last strern frame and I get 37 mm. The area between the batten and wales is for the wider planks of 5/32" (5mm).
For reference, the dead flat frame dimension from keel to wale is 129mm, first frame forward is 80 mm and last frame is 123 mm
These plans also show that the fore part of the garboard doesn't taper down like an English ship but goes up. I need to double check this as could just be a drawing distortion. (see the red line). Nor does it appear that they used a broad strake next to the garboard (which was wide) but a wide stealer near the stern. <scratches head> The other oddball (to me) thing is that the planks are not uniform in width at the midsection for those but the NMM cross-section plan for Licorne is.
I'll give the tape method a shot and see what it does... sounds like a good idea.

Cut out & dry fitted all the pieces for the top of the gun ports. Glued them all in place- ready to sand the sides down.

Shaved the extra wood sides down with a small carving blade. Started sanding. Was having trouble sanding the inside corners so I made a homemade sanding stick with pointed wedge on one end by gluing sandpaper to a stick with contact cement. This got down in those corners better. Have them all sanded to shape on port & starboard sides. Ready to start the gun port lintels.

Fastened the temporary batten to line up the gun port sills. Got it lined up good & marked the line. Cut out pieces of wood & fitted them making sure they all flow in a smooth line the whole way. Had to re-cut a few of them but once I had them all right I glued them in both port & starboard. Used a metal ruler to check that they were equally level on each side.

thank you Sal, Carl, and all you fine folks who hit the like button. the clean table......yea, there's a reason for doing it.
in putting the last few pieces in place, I feel this would be the best time to call this build finished. oh, I'm sure that there are a few more aspects I could add, but confinement of space is beginning to be a problem. some of the aspects I've added, and some that I still had in mind, would have been better done, if the trawl rig wasn't in place.
I did some modifications that wasn't on the actual boat, but they are minor, considering how close this build looks compared to the kit build. I'm pretty amazed how close I got. it's too bad I couldn't find the rigging directions for her....I could have gotten closer to that as well. what the heck........I muddled through
Frank......if your looking in......I tried.......I really did. I guess George Clooney is too busy I got the addresses for his agent and publisher, and sent them a letter along with pictures. I haven't heard back thus far. I'm still holding the candle though, perhaps I may hear something down the road......if I do, I'll post it
these are just a few pictures of the finished boat. I will do some more for the gallery.......even some of the Lobsie twins.....they're about a year overdue. I'm so very glad that you folks enjoyed the build.......I had an absolute blast in doing it! should I add any more to her, I will be sure to post it as well.
thanks for looking in and showing your support and suggestions!

thanks Augie........as Mark wrote.......the times that try men's souls. mine is 'nuth'in to get hung about........'
so anyway........the preservers were set aside for a short time.......and then cemented in place. as I mentioned, the one with the minor defect {really minor} was put on the bulkhead wall.
the holder for this one was painted flat white.
I had one more plastic single block left over. since the bead string is done, I cut the excess off and seized the block to it. it was then wound up in a coil and cemented with white glue to keep the coil together. it was then cemented on the main deck under the podium.
then......something amazing happened.......all the clutter disappeared! the several months of dust and stuff......gone!
the buoy string was cut into three sections. the first section had a stub of rope sticking out.........white glue was squeezed into the hole, and the stubble was tucked in to create a rope eye loop. this one was to be placed in the top of the podium.
the other two were of equal length. for the ends of these two, I did something a bit different. trimming the rope stubbles off, metal eye bolts were cemented in.
the first one was laid lengthwise along the starboard side.
the other one was laid down however it wanted to..........

Sjors reacted to rafine in Frigate Essex by Rafine - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Kitbashed
I've now done the main lower and topsail yards and their rigging. The making of the yards was identical to that shown for the comparable fore yards. The rigging was also very similar, although the increasingly tight spaces in which to work have made the process slower and more difficult.
With this work, the main mast is now complete, except for a few lines that seem better left until the mizzen is done ( topsail and lower braces, lower sheets). I'm now making the mizzen topsail and lower yards and the boom and gaff. The end is in sight.

After reading all the theories and "how-to's" where the rubber meets the road.... I'd like some feedback on my batten. I'm planking from the wales down to the batten first. The batten represents where the wide wale planks will end... or should end.

Port side aft bulwark planked... I'm cleaning up the shop a bit and I'll start on the hull planking.
Critiques, laughing out loud, pretty much anything you want to say about it is allowed, as always.
I do notice that there's a couple of place that need a touch more sanding, but those places are on hold until after the rest of the hull is planked. Might as well get everything at once....

Sjors reacted to Piet in Hr. Ms. O 19 1938 by Piet - FINISHED - scale 1:50 - submarine of the Royal Navy Netherlands in service 1939 - 1945
Hello everyone, well, as I have mentioned a few posts ago, the only thing left for me to do before closing this build log is a few final pics. Out of the roughly 50 pics I took yesterday I picked only nine.
I want to thank everyone for following this build and your encouragement. A special thanks to those who gave me advice and assistance in procuring photos, drawings and hardware like Gino, Remco, Amateur Jan, Mark T. If I missed anyone, please forgive me, I have thanked you on the spot in one of the earlier posts.
I will monitor this log for a short while and respond but please keep it on topic. If you have questions send me a PM and I'll answer to the best of my ability.
I have really enjoyed doing this build with all of you looking over my shoulder. Your friendship I will treasure and hopefully I'll see you all again in my VOC ship dockyard.
Cheers,

Thanks again folks for all the kind words and the "likes".
Just a small update today. I have completed preparations for the Upper Deck framing.
The next step was to make the Upper Deck Clamps. These comprise an Upper and a Lower Clamp and I opted to include “iron bolts” using copper wire blackened in situ using Liver of Sulphur. To make life easier, I prepared a card template for the bolting pattern and inserted the bolts prior to installation on the model. Here are the clamps ready for installation (the bolts to the right appear not to be blackened, but this is just a trick of the light in the photo):
Clamping them securely was a little tricky and I was grateful for the mini Spales I had made previously:
The final preparations prior to moving on to the Upper Deck construction were the Mortar Pit Support Standards (knees) and the Centreline Stanchions. The knees were easily cut on the scroll saw, ensuring the grain was oriented on the diagonal, and then given their final shape using the spindle sander and disc sander. The Centreline Stanchions introduced another timber – Walnut. These were turned on the lathe. My extremely limited turning abilities managed a reasonable approximation to the stepped shape at either end of these. The Walnut is not a particularly good wood for machining, but it was finished up by a series of increasing grit sand paper, to an almost polished finish prior to being coated with Wipe-On Poly. During the turning process, each end of the columns were drilled to take a 1.5mm brass locating pin.
Here are the Stanchions and Standards (Knees) in place, along with a view of the completed Deck Clamps. The Stanchions are only temporarily placed for the photo – they will be permanently fixed once the Deck Beams are ready to be permanently fixed in place.
I have now started work on the upper deck beams, but have discovered a possible error in the drawings. I have sent a message to Jeff Staudt for confirmation before proceeding.

Hello All, Thanks for the comments and Likes, as always very much appreciated.
Just a small update just working on a few bit that I can do with a few hours spare.
I wanted to finish the quarter galleries. (Parts 178+73) OMG, That was such pain. I could not find any reference for the installation. I Seached and searched.. well this is how its turned out so far.
Part 73, I sanded an edge to it, it looked better that just a square edge..

I could not wait to order part from CBS,
So I took a strip of walnut 0.5 x 4mm hand sanded an L shape pattern,
once glued I lightly sanded to blend in with the hull so no lip is visible, then sanded the whole strip so its not to thick.
TBH, This is what i was thinking although every ones advice was great and helpful.
Going to be clearing up work area now, then clean up the painting on the hull and toughing up where needed. I am working on the starboard side, with anything that needs adding , I have painted the door arch parts.. ...
cheers to all
