Sjors reacted to Katsumoto in Santa Maria 1492 by Katsumoto - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - scale 1:65
**Railings, Railings, Railings.....Rawhide!**
Mesdames et Messieurs - Salut!
Within the Christmas spirit, I bring you a lean and mean update of the ship and I continued on the upper railings. Not much to say, just have a look!
Oh and for the keen observers, I did made a mistake on purpose. I'll explain later, but it is all intentional, but technicaly wrong!
Down the stairs we go...
I made a "thingy" for the windlass...to stop the thing when operating it.
Next....just look...
This is how AL want me to make it...
So I like to continue the style and design I have chosen, so here we go, and oh....it will give me some issues later on when I need to start rigging the ship. But we will cross that bridge when we get there....
The line of the deck has a curve into it. I want to follow that curve for my railing. The top plank must be bend and thats an issue. It's better to use the spilling plank technique, but I do not have the proper lumber to do that trick. I need to soak, bend and pray it will hold!
Soaking first, just boiling water, nothing special.
.
Phew, made it....now some nice views of the ship...
Thats it folks...
Adieu!
Peter

Sjors reacted to EJ_L in Le Soleil Royal by EJ_L - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:77 - 1669 Version
Vic, I will try to remember to post some pictures of how I make the coils soon. I meant to do it this weekend but, it slipped my mind till just now. The process is very simple but, worth showing multiple times for anyone who doesn’t know.
I did get quite a bit done over the last few days. Walkways are installed across the waist, ladders have been built and set and the first of he side rails have gone in. Now I am fabricating the remaining bitts for the fore and mizzenmast masts as well as the remaining knights which brings me to my next major challenge, deciphering the rigging plans.
I spent several hours hours yesterday with colored pencils tracing out the lines to deck locations as shown on the plans and have come to the conclusion that the person who created these drawings did not double check the design. Many lines foul each other, several lines connect to nothing and others share the same point of termination in ways gay I know would not have been done.
So, that means I will turn to much more useful books, particularly Anderson’s great works as I did for La Couronne and make the best out of that source.
No, I am not yet ready for rigging but, in order to make sure that I have all the deck fittings I need ready and correct, I must start looking and figuring things out now. Reality is, once I finish up with the deck pieces, dummy guns and port lids are next followed by channels and any other miscellaneous parts I have forgotten. Then the masting will start.

Finished rigging the guns on the upper gun deck. With those installed I can install the bitts and the cradles for the ship’s boats. Also with the work on the gun decks wrapping up I can start building the railings for the forecastle, quarter and poop decks without as much fear of them being damaged.

The eight remaining guns for the waist and the sixteen for the forecastle and quarter decks are ready with their blocks attached. Now to make the breech ropes and the other half of the tackle and they will be ready to install.

Cannon building continues. I did get some new blocks and rope from Syren to help out. Step by step they are coming together!

Far too kind! Doris is definitely someone to aspire to as her work is beautiful pieces of art.
The catheads and their supporting posts posts are in place. I also fitted, though not secured, the bow sprit.
Next up are a bunch of small assemblies. Bitts, railings, knight heads, ladders and more canons. The decks will be coming alive over the next weeks.
Thanks you all for the very kind words, likes and following along on this long journey.

Sjors reacted to Old Collingwood in Black Pearl by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - 1/72 Scale
Good day all - Happy Holidays to all,
First day back on the pearl in what feels like ages, any way I decided to carry on working from the inside - out, this ment working on the canons starting by assembling the canon/carriages, then I fixed the breach ropes and working on two at a time - I applied a few coats of paint then weathered them, I also fitted a thin strip of wood under the carriage to aid gluing them down to the deck.
I used the same trick as the previous canons - I drilled two fine holes through the bulkhead to take the breach ropes.
So two have been placed and glued down, when they are fixed I will place the breach ropes with the right amount of sag - then glue them through the holes.
Just two pics folks.

now that the hull is upright again.........I can do a little on the deck I was on the right track when I made the second bow bulkhead fascia.......too bad I didn't stick with it. well.......anyway, first thing I did was cement the anchor boxes in place. I still need to cut them out.
I was amazed that the bow beam I cemented on earlier didn't break off in the planking process..........at one point, I was using it as a grab handle! it just shows how well it's cemented in place had I referred to the diagram, I would have seen that I memory was correct.........two ladders and the opening at the bulkhead was in the middle. I have plans of making sliding doors for it........much like the ones seen in the intro to the old Popeye cartoons. I was amazed at one of my Christmas gifts....... a DVD collection of Popeye cartoons! in it, is the cartoon where Popeye rescues Olive Oyl from Ali-baba and the forty thieves.......I believe that is the one that shows Popeye's ship {either that, or it the one about Sinbad the Sailor}...... at any rate, that is the boat that I still plan on basing the S.S. Olive Oyl on. I have just the hull........I just have to clone it first anyway,........I stuck with the Nordkap bulkhead fascia, but with a twist. I moved the door more to port and reversed the porthole opening.
next was to assemble the compartment for the opening.......in hindsight, I shoulda made it larger. the bulkhead beam and the next one was added.
I still need to clean it up a bit more. I then turned towards making the pit for the companionway. after cutting out the opening, it was boxed in.
some sanding will need to be done to cut down on the depth of the box. I think I need to remove the end piece and make the opening wider....the doors might not be able to make a full swing
the portholes were cleaned out..........open the pit just a little bit more and it will look better....then I can cement the floor in. I'll then need to mark where the entrance windows are, so I can cut them out. I thought I had made a mistake with the structure, but in looking at the diagrams and pictures, I'm good so far. the lower cabin will be added for the next update......I really want to stay with the general looks of the vessel. the bow bulkhead fascia will hopefully be the only pho-par........I'm not going to bother changing it.

So, here we go..
The frames and strenghtenings are in place.
The beginning is there.
I also place the consoles for the axels and motor.( I don't use that because she stays static but want to show you how it works if you want it RC )
I have phone around and there will be no lights .......
I found it to expensive for what I want.
The model ,when she is finished, will stay at the workshop and don't go into the living room.
I'm only there when there is daylight so it's no use .
Then now the pictures.
What's in the box...... not much 😀

Welcome all of you who is visiting me .
This build log of course!
Grand was coming with the great idea to make her rc so someone can take it over......
I was telling it to Anja and she had the great idea to put light in it......
That should be for the first time for me to do.
So here are the new plans......
Light in the steering cabin, green on the outside for starboard, red for portside.
Maybe lights in the hull?
Light for a searchlight?
If anyone knows what to do.....tell me.
Then i don’t need a christmast tree anymore....

Welcome everyone
@ Lou,
I just like this model.
I lived for 5 minutes away when her home port was Schiedam.
I see her many times and I was a few times on board to see how she looks inside
@ Ben,
As you can see I build her before and it's fun!
When I compare the first and last ,there is a big difference!
And when you get started ob your workboat....let me know!
@ John,
I have install a safe in the house 😁
When she is finished I will lock her away......
@ Wayne,
Nice to hear of you😀
We can make music together on Skype?????
Anja is saying Hi to you also
@ Denis,
You know that you are always welcome.
In the future I think you will build her also!
And Anja is protecting her 😝
@ Piet,
Also welcome.
I like the Zwarte Zee also and I have build her many years ago but now she has a plastic hull and I don't like that!
So no more Zwarte Zee for me!
Anja is also yelling Hi to you 😊
@ Nick,
Thanks for the welcome.
Health issues took me away from the workshop.
And because I'm a little tired of ratlines, shrouds and canons I thought this is a good change.
I will finish the other ones but not now.
I know now how she looks and how to build but as I say before.....each kit is different!
The first one was not laser cut.
This one is not totally planked!
I will close the hull but you will see how that goes.
Then there is for me a last thing.
For everyone a Merry Christmas and all the good things for 2019
Also from Anja !

Evening Zappto.
It is a interesting ship.
Not only see this one in real but also as a model.
The first was 25 years ago and the difference between the kits arehuge.
The first one i have to saw everything by myself and now it is laser cut.
Also you had two bye 2 boxes....one with wood and the other with the metal parts.
When you really want to do something else i can recommend this one!

What interesting ship you will build. It is a pleasure to see a different ship build, not a tall ship. Looks like a nice kit!

The ratlines are now complete. Three things are true about doing ratlines: 1) since it is a year or more between times that I do them, I completely forget how to tie clove hitches, and have to look up how to do them each time; 2) once I have tied a few, it's like riding a bike ,and it comes back quickly; and 3) it always feels like I could have, and should have, done them better. Having said all that, I'm happy that they are done and I can move on to more enjoyable things. Time to make , mount and rig some yards.
