just a paragraph of how detailed and cool the build looked and that they would be passing the pictures around to their different depts.  it's good that I wasn't expecting anything from it.  kind of how I got to know Tom@ Billing USA........I had gotten the Nordkap and I was asking about the fittings kit for it.  I got this huge e-mail of how he was concerned about me building a kit that was so old {over 20 years},  as my first kit.  I even got to meet him in person last summer.........I built the Susan A for him,  and he and his wife came by to pick it up.   they are such wonderful folk....hope to see them again.

still,  it's nice to get a positive responce from the folks who make these kits

    Hi Andy,

Short sleeve shirts only from now mate, that pointed sticky out thing in the front is just made for catching a shirt sleeve or jumper.

She's looking absolutely great mate, your doing a superb job, hope you know who has had his fix on the pics.

OK, ok!... Don't get all bent out of shape...

I've got the battens done on the main top, next step will be to do the bands and cleats, then the main mast will get painted up.

Foremast all painted and the wooldings put on, I had to joggle the spacing a little bit, but it's not really noticeable unless you attack the thing with a ruler.

Also got the bowsprit all cleated and painted up, and yes according to the plans, those cleats are supposed to look like that.

And just for good measure, a couple of overall shots.... nevermind the mess on the workbench... the paint revolution has not yet come...

    Now... is that better?

    Andy,

    Looking good.

Gonna be interesting to see what you do with the leeches and bunts.....

I understand that if you put salt on the leeches they will fall off, so be careful....

    Cheers,

    Hello dear friends,

Another year and another number added to my age.
Thank you all so much for making my birthday even more special with all your wonderful wishes.
This also includes everyone who has sent me a PM, Mobbsie, Cristi (Christikc), Martin (McDood), Sam (Samueljr), Al (Cuda1949), Christian (Barbossa), John (John46) and Edwin (Edmay).
It means a lot to me that you all took the time to wish me a happy birthday.
And I feel very blessed to have you as my friends. This was a beautiful day.

And for those who want to know, this is where we had dinner.
In our favorite restaurant Grand Café 't Oude Raedthuys in Schiedam.
They have a great cook, delicious food, wonderful staff and very good service.

    So the promised photos.

The fore top painted. Made the bands around the mast out of some stripwood I had lying about.

The the mizzen top mast, shaped, but not yet tapered. And finally the main top mast all ready to go.

It was nice to break out the paint again and get some colour on things.

Still got a lot of tedious detail work to go on the other two masts and on the bowsprit.

Can anyone who's built this kit tell me what the six blocks under the fore and main tops are for and on which spreader arm they go? I want to at least get the eyebolts in place before the rigging starts... and the plans don't really make it clear what they are for and where exactly they go... (And I don't want to find out the hard way)

    Andy

Everyone: More pics for my progress folder. The first one I had posted earlier but got lost -shows the rigging work I had done on the upper gun deck. A bit of work but worth it. The next photo is a quick pic of the progress that I have completed so far.. have the spar deck half planked (still needs to be sanded and treenailed).

Once the planks are all done I will get the bulwarks planked and then finish off with the grates and deck furniture and then I can finally start on the stern ornamentation and channels on the bow and port side.. finally some tangible progress! :-)

Glad to see this forum getting back up to full speed after the crash... Great stuff!

    Hi Andy,

Following on with the hand drill lathe mate here is a pic of one from the old MSW, I cant remember who posted it, hope they dont mind. I keep meaning to build it myself but just hav'nt gotten round to it yet.

I would make just one small modifiation which is to place a roller bearing to hold the dowel end, we dont want any fires do we.

I hope you dont mind me posting this to you but I thought it might help.

Have a great stay in the wild's mate and come back all refreshed and eager to get stuck in again.

Not to worry... I've still got many things to get out of my system (read: kits) before I go down that road.. I also need to buy a few power tools.... And learn how to use them properly....

Anyway... Up at the cottage this weekend.. Given the nice weather (finally!!), couldn't pass up the chance...

Earliest opening day yet! Most years we wait for the May TwoFour weekend.

(Victoria day or whatever you call it in England or Oz... Ours boils down to a reference to a case of beer... And a general idea about what is done.... Head north with friends... Light a fire and sit around it late into the night drinking said beer and feeding black flies....)

So the long and the short of it is... A relaxing pause from the work bench... But I'll be back at 'er soon enough...

Relax, Andy...it's just a bunch of those folks forming a Confederacy to try and entice others using the Syren call.  We know the force is strong in you...but, boy, new tools, a place to use them, the ability to really screw up in a more spectacular and rapid fashion!

But remember: Power tools also make your slips and errors faster much bigger – and so far I’m only talking about nicks in the wood. So, it’s your choice - do you want to live fast and furious or slow and gentle.
(OK, OK, there are more options - like slow and furious etc.)

    Hi, Sjors!
Ask more questions, much better everything with started specifying and planning, than then to puzzle how to correct. I too was in such situations when already there was late something to correct  . The Greek philosopher Socrates spoke "Isn't shame something not to know. It is a shame not to want to study" and it is the good principle to which I always follow, and not only in construction of models  .

    Hi Garward,

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm glad that your are back and I accept your apology.
Let us just leave this behind us and get back to the build.

Danny showed me a picture how it should be and yes, it is a big difference with what I have done.
The chains on my Mirage are soldered at the end and in there they made a tiny hole to attach the chain to the hull.
When I cut the chains shorter, I see no way to attach them to the hull.
I wanted to change it but I didn't know how, for me this was the only way. That's why I left it the way it is now.

    Thanks again for your reply.

    Hello, Sjors!

I apologize for a little overdue answer, there were urgent affairs.  Both in any matter, and in shipbuilding, there are fundamental basic principles and rules. That I wrote about the correct arrangement of shroud plate and shroud just belongs to such rules. These rules for the sailing ships (regardless of the name - Le Mirage or Fantom or somehow differently  ) are described in many books about construction of the ships and models. How to arrive in such cases - to follow the established rules or to repeat errors of drawings from kits (and these mistakes, as it is known to all modellers, there is a lot of   - producers of kits try to do models simpler and in bigger quantity) is a natural right and a choice the modeller, here to him nobody can specify.  If you like to build Le Mirage according to drawings of a kit -  it is your choice and your solution which nobody proposes you to change.

thanks all for your kind comments      putting the eye bolts in was the better solution......that or four tiny filled in holes that might have shown up like a sore thumb.   errands today kinda put a crimp in my build time,  but I still got a bit more done.  thanks again,  I really appreciate your kind views.

don't count yourself short Paul......experiment with some thin linen.  cut them,  fold and sew the edges,  and then sew in some pleats   {I use a sewing machine for all this}.   paint them with diluted white glue and drape them over a folded towel {covered with a piece of plastic wrap}.   you'd be surprised with what you can come up with.   I haven't been making them too long...this is the second build I've done with sails.   I see your new here.......welcome to the fold!   you've come to the right place!

I'll be around when your ready to do your sails Alex.   I'm not an expert.....but I'll be happy to help where I can!
