You may have already come across this link to photo's of the Batavia on the internet, I've consulted the photos extensively as a reference for my Fluyt build.
When in doubt consult the actual ship by built by experts, being able to click and zoom in on various details of the Batavia has been a great aid.

Hi,
In addition, this is a link where you can see the Batavia and walk in 3D on the decks of the Batavia, just like in Google Streetview.

Looking real smart. I love the weathered look of the wood. I never included the nails on the strakes but now I wish I did. Just check the length of your lower cannons as some kits had them too long and they would stick out too far.
One builder on here had dramas and had to cut them down shorter. Top job your doing.
Thanks Scott,
I've used furniture wax (dark oak) for the hull. I also used it for the Half Moon, and there I made it shiny. This time I didn't polish it, which gives it a weathered look indeed.
I didn't put all the nails yet, still working on that.
I'll double check the cannons... althouth I think I took it into accout 7 years ago when building the hull.

Hi Alex,
Nice work so far!
Do you know the book by Heinrich Winter 'Hollandische Zweidecker 1660/1670'?
He gives quite a lot of pictures of a model of a Dutch two-decker. Dik has used the drawings from that book as a starting point for his recreation of the Zeven Provincien, and Mamoli clearly used the book as primary inspiration for the Friesland. The pics in the book may be helpful when it comes to the detailing of the decks.
Jan
Hi Jan,
Yes, I recently got that book including the building plans. I think I will (try to) do the gallion according to those plans. So there is some scratch work to be done as well.

and since I started again 2 months ago:
I tried to carve the lion from scratch...
Found out it's missing some claws. But I'll add those a bit later.

Hi All,
After my build of the Half Moon, I started buiding the Friesland of Mamoli.
However, when the 2nd planking was nearly done, I paused buiding due to all kinds of circumstances. Now that I'm working from home for 2 months already (due to Corona), I picked up buiding again.
I'll post some pictures of the buid in 2013, end then continue where I left off.
I hope to finish this build, I didn't start a report earlier because I was afraid I wouldn't keep it up. But now I built for 2 months already, I dare to start. this report.
Hopefully you like it, and help my motivation to keep up!
Best regards,
Alex

Thanks Max!
I'm glad you like it.
I think the Half Moon is a good ship to start with. It has all aspects of wooden shipbuilding, but it's not too big and it's not too complex.
I hope you will start a log as well. There will be enough people who will be happy to help you out if you have questions.

Looks really good, and you're going very fast!
I really benefit from your log. I have the first planking almost done from my Friesland.
Can you still remove the upper decks to place the cannons on the deck below? If not, how will you manage?
Best Regards,
Alex

Hi,
I'll be following your build log with great interest, as I'm about to start the Friesland as well.
This model is based on the Hohenzoller model, and is a twin sister of the Zeven Provincien.
There was a ship Frysia or Groot Frysia (= Friesland), buit it was completed in1665, and part of the Dutch fleet under admiral Michiel de Ruyter in the battle against England & France.
I am looking forward to learn from you, and start a build log myself!
Regards,
Alex

I didn't use everything supplied by the kit:
But I like the result anyway. :-)
