Here are some pictures of the maiden voyage of our Banterer as you can see she is riding still very high on the water  indicating that about 4 kilos of ballast are still missing to stabilize her.

Next steps will be to give her more ballast before her next trial.

Just a light update... been working on frames.  Have several cut and test fitted and all reference points marked.

The pics below show how I'm solving the issues that plagued me on Version 1.0.

Since all measurements are referenced to the build board, I've added a tab to each frame to securely locate that point (green arrow). After I cut in that part of the frame, I fit it and re-measure, re-refrence the other points.

One set of points is where the deck clamps need to be so the red arrows show those.  1/8" deck beam, a 1/8" clamp and 1/16" inch plank will put the deck height were it needs to be.  This particular frame is #1 and thus, there's three decks.. lower, gun, and forecastle.

The blue arrows reference the outside dimensions of the gun port cutout for the sill to sit properly.  I'm using a 1/8" sill and when they're fitted I'll finesse them to be exact.

The black arrows point to the line for the wales.  These are small cuts into the frame and filled with colored glue to hightlight  They only demarcate the transition line from wale to planking and vice versa.

The black arrow with the white fill is the cutline for when this beast is finally cut from the build board.  A top rail will sit on top of this line.

I'm going slow and careful to avoid dong wrong what I did the last time.

Installed oar locks. Their crisp edges a bit in contrast with a smooth hull. I tried to smooth them, but on that scale I can't make it accurately. So let's call it a feature

While making a photos saw how innacurate is the twart moulding... I should have make it from boxwood, but. I had no boxwood back then... And it is deeply in a boat structure, can't find a way to replace twarts without traces.
Well, I will blame that drunk rowers, who was trying to hide contraband in that mouldings!

Looks good! Doublecheck that all frames are properly aligned, so there would be no "holes" and "bulges" because some frame is a bit non-aligned. I did that mistake on my pinnace, it's unfixable on later phases. Take a plank and see how it goes, hull must be perfectly symmetric.

Small hint - it would be easier to make a planking if you glue all frames together with a few strips on top:

And then glue some scrap wood in the center of the hull, to just clamp it into a table vice:

It is much easier to plank when hull is firmly fixed, you don't need to hold it, and frames are not wiggling (because they are glued together).
All that strips will go away when you remove the frame centers, so they do not affect any end result.

Work went slow the last number of months.

I finished the sides of the main gratings with some off-cut planking strips.  I first sanded the planks to same height as the gratings.

I did not follow the instructions for the cat davits precisely.  I did not like the idea of tying the rope that is used to hoist the anchors to an eyebolt on the deck, so I replaced that eyebolt with a cleat that I filed from some scrap wood.  The other eyebolt was blackened and varnished first.

The plywood roof of the helmsman’s cabin needed some pre bending.  I traced the curves of the fore and aft walls onto some scrap wood, made a ‘negative’ cut out and used it as I jig to clamp and shape the roof.

I sanded all the sides, but the joints between the walls and the roof wasn’t perfect.  I covered all the walls with wood filler and sanded all the sides again to get a perfect finish.

Finally, I lined all the sides with the mahogany laminate strips.   I first cut the lining strips into thinner strips that had variation in their width.  It makes the 'planks' look more natural to me.

The admiral bought me some presents with my credit card.  I’m looking forward to practising my lathe work before I start with the masts and yards.

Reading a short description on Amazon give no info about a book content. Blah blah, something about shipmodels, aha, ok, clear

Prepared all metal parts. Manual suggests to use black paper, but it looks so-so, will use blackened brass instead.
Imitation of bolts is done by bumping it with a dull nail.

Waiting for a blackening liquid to arrive...

Rest of the day was spent on oars. Tricky little things, if you don't have a lathe.
I turned them from a square boxwood stock, holding it with bare fingers. Even on a minimum speed it was hard, now I don't have a fingerprints on a few fingers anymore

When painted, they look cute (no poly yet, will be better after a coat of poly):

Just read your log. All I can say is well done! My Pinnace is sitting ready to build and you've provided some great ideas.

Slowly finishing interior details. Mounted splash protectors, rings, some decorative things near a few twarts, small ladder for a captain.
Some things are done not according to the manual (different position on splash protectors, etc). So far I like the modified parts compared to pictures in manual

Rudder tiller was nice, but too small for that scale. Made another one, bigger. Maybe it is not in scale, but now it will not break if a fly poops on it
Connection between carved part and turned part is enforced with a small brass rod. It is a pity that connection is visible, will try better next time:

And that is a moulded boxwood strip instead of friesers (that look like an overdecoration imho). I understand that are a part of contemporary model, plus the whole point of captain pinnace is to flash, so it was overdecorated. But I like a more laconic design, so replaced most flashy parts with less flashy, but elegant:

Glued floors, stained inboard and covered it with poly. Not very accurate though.

    Yahoo! Finished the hull planking!
    Looks ugly before sanding:

(Yes, wood is of different color, no more basswood!)

    But much better after sanding:

Final sanding would be done after a treenails imitation. Planks are quite thin, dont want to sand them too much

Now it really feels like a boat!

In a meanwhile, added a third planking level and made a base for a slipway-style model stand. It would be painted black and I will add some diagonal supports for the boat when the planking would be completed.
Still not sure how that stand will look in reality, so maybe there would be a second iteration.

Today worked on oar locks. There is a mismatch between photo in instructions and the ship plans, preferred version from plans.

Inspired by Remco build log, decided to switch to "treat every detail as a model" philosophy and no sanding, make things good straight away, do not count on sanding to hide mistakes. And - want to make a tiny thing - make a jig first!

Now I wonder how to apply poly to that tiny pieces... And ideas?
