AVBiker reacted to rafine in Granado by rafine - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:64
With the exception of the swivel guns and the anchors, work on the hull is now complete. Those items will be done during or after the masting and rigging process to avoid damage.
At the aft end, I added the cabin port lids and the standing figures at the transom edge. At the bow, I did the foremost port covers and added the chesstrees and simulated sheaves for the fore tack.
The transom figures are the kit castings, but with their heavy bases cut off and the figures modified to fit the transom in a manner more closely reproducing the appearance shown in AOTS. The metal was painted to match wood in the same manner as previously done on the other castings.
All of the port lids and covers were made from boxwood strip and used the kit's PE brass hinges. The aft lids also had brass rings added. AOTS shows no rings on the forward covers.
The chesstrees are boxwood strip with simulated sheaves drilled and cut in. The fore tack sheaves were drilled and cut into the hull ahead of the chesstrees.
I am now beginning work on the masting and rigging.

AVBiker reacted to Robin Lous in Greek Bireme by Robin Lous - FINISHED - Dusek - Scale 1:72 - First wooden ship build
I finished the railing on the rear deck.
Did it the same way as the centre deck railing and made sure the height and the distance between the stantions are the same.
From the side it looks like a continuing railing now.
More soon,
Robin

AVBiker reacted to mikiek in US Brig Niagara by mikiek - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64 - First wooden ship build
The pix don't look a lot different than the ones from last week. But I am calling the deck finished now. All the parts made and mounted. I will still do a final compare with the plans to see if I overlooked something.
My thanks to Darrell for leading the way on the galley pipe. Was not sure how to do that one. Soldering brass strips to the brass pipe was quite annoying. Tried a mini torch at first. Get one soldered. Go to do the next one and the heat would melt the solder on the first one. Had to break out the resistance solderer. It took a while to get each strip in place with one of those third hand things. Then get the electrodes touching without knocking everything off. But the solder was quick and did not affect the other pieces. The little cone piece on top was made by turning a piece of wood. Actually my first attempt using a lathe for anything other than rounding square sticks for spars.
I did some reading on galley stoves and it appears that early pipes were made of wood not metal. Not so sure about during the Niagara period. If it is wood then I probably have the pipe painted the wrong color. I know the top area would have been black from soot.
Channels and chain plates are next. I've posted a question about that here. Feel free to add your 2 cents worth on that.
Well here she is.

The round gunports from Mamoli are not very good. I make my version, a little bit smaler and difficiler.
The plan from Mamoli is not correct. The print from VdVelde dJ looks a closed window with decoration and not 2 other windows. So my Mary is make as VdVelde print and Mary as museum.
