Well done.  The old adage 'measure twice, cut once' holds true.

Hoping to hear how the treatment worked.  Give it plenty of time to dry out.  Wood likes to 'spring back' and fight with you.

Good catch.  And rest assured (as Mark said) that in the many Syren logs I've followed, there have been quite a few bulk heads cracked.

That rabbet method is really a good technique.  Chuck used it in Confed as well.

I'll be following along JesseLee.  She was my first and I really enjoyed the challenge.  Chuck's practicum is first rate.

    Have a great voyage.

May as well take advantage of extra pairs of eyes to set your mind at ease.  I'm sure you'll give her a secure berth on her trip to the meeting.  I know one fellow here on MSW had to make a quick stop on a similar adventure and the results were unfortunate.

I'm no expert but the run of the planks looks very good.

Please don't rush it, Wes.  You've set a lofty goal and I'm not alone in wishing you succeed.

I don't do social media at all Richard but have found the 'like' button useful.  As Dirk says, it gives you an opportunity to let the author know you're looking and that you 'like' what you see ....... without sending the old 'great job' comment.

I use both CA and PVA.  The PVA mostly for larger areas that can be clamped.

For CA I use 3 different viscosities depending on the need.  I dislike the typical 'thin' grade as it can get all over the place.  My actual favorite is a 50/50 mixture of thin and medium.

Thin CA can actually be used over painted surfaces if you take the time to carefully pinprick the painted surface so the CA gets down to the wood.

To use CA on metal-to-metal, I scuff the surface of the metal parts.  Adds a lot to the strength of the joint.

I use the CA on the wax paper trick and apply it with a sharpened toothpick.  When the toothpick gets some buildup, I sand it back to a point using 80 grit on a sanding block.  That same block comes in handy if I get some CA on my fingertip.  I also use a very fine 'fork' which I keep soaking in a tube with acetone so it doesn't clog up.

Mark hit it on the head for glue 'removal'.  But who ever needs to do that

Managed to get a few things done before Spring drives me outdoors

Firstly, I talked about thinning the bulwarks.  The first two photos show the 'before' version.  You can see the thickness of the bulkhead frames, combined with the outer planking, gives me an overall thickness of 1/4" +.

This needed to be brought down to an overall thickness of 5/32" at the caprail and 7/32" at deck level which is seen in the next two photos:

The transom had been previously done.

It was then time to add the cap rail to the transom.  Although it may have been possible to do this with one continuous piece (I tried but couldn't), the kit provides two laser cut pieces to handle the curves and a third section is added to the center.  This worked quite well although I need to work on the seams a bit.  They are actually perfectly smooth to the touch, but not to the eye.  Here it is depicted from a few different angles:

Finally, the quarter galleries are making progress.  The first layers have been added.  There is an overlaying layer and additional vertical area to be added.  But I'm pleased so far with the arrangement:

The interior areas of the QG were stained before it was closed up.  Not much will be visible once completed but this was a good time to get it done.

That's it for the time being.  Everyone grab your favorite beverage and sing out a toast to the long-awaited Spring, 2014!

    Just a small update.

The upper counter has been planked and the transom painted black.  Scribed moldings were made and added to the transom.

In addition, the bases for the QG were mounted, painted and moldings added:

I've worked on the white metal castings that go below the stern galleries getting them to sit properly.  I'll cover this when I get to mounting them.

Now it's time to thin the bulwarks from the inside.  Quite a bit needs to be removed and, since I don't relish this task, I'll be taking my time over the next few days.

    Time for a short update.

The stern post and previously scribed hull moldings were added:

Work on the transom has begun:

Here you can see that a double layer of 1/8 x 1/16 " planks had been laid on the transom wings.  The entire transom was then thinned (on the inside) to an overall thickness of 3/16".  This was a bit tricky but (once again) the pencil sander did most of the work:

We'll now begin to add the quarter galleries.

    Just a quick update.

The stern gun ports have been laid in:

As they are vertical to the deck, they do not match the angle of the canted stern frames.  I used plywood spacers to set the height and width of the ports so (hopefully) they are accurate.

Just need to add a few support fillers to the stern and fair them in.  Then it's on to the false deck

Some additional progress on the stern.

Rather then fiddle with a paper template, I made a balsa spacer to set the height of the sills.  This will determine the height of the windows:

The sills were then installed.  Once again the pencil sander was used to fair them to the transom .... inside and out.  It has now been determined this tool IS the best thing since sliced bread:

As a final check, another paper template was used to see if we're in the ballpark:

Finally, here's an overall shot as it's been a while:

Framing of the stern has begun.

The uprights are installed in pre-cut slots in the aftmost bulkhead which establishes the appropriate angle preliminarily.  The final adjustment is carried out during the installation of the lintels and sills which frame the stern windows.  I'm trying to be very cautious with alignment here as tolerances are tight.

The lintels and sills are laser cut from 3/16" ply, 2 layers laminated together to form 3/8" fillers.  In the first photo, the lintels have been installed and faired to the stern.  I have taped a template of the windows to the stern for illustrative purposes:

The lintels need to be faired inboard as well because of their thickness:

Normally this inside fairing would be a chore around here.  But I used a 'pencil sander' (?) I got from Microlux to do the job:

I'm not certain this tool is the best thing since sliced bread but it just saved my butt.  I foresee more uses in future.

Tomorrow we'll start to get the sills installed and faired in a similar fashion.  I'll post some long range shots then.

Did I mention this is a lot of fun ???

    50 hours into the build.

Yes, I recall a bit of twist.  I think the beveling plus a little 'creative sanding' pretty much solves the issue.

Thanks to all for looking in.  I really do not deserve all these wonderful comments ....... if she looks good it's because she was designed that way.  I just do my best to follow Chuck's plans and practicum.  And the encouragement I get from you folks keeps me focused and striving to improve.
