After painting the gunports, hull planking began began with the wales, moving upward. The model is single planked primarily with 1/8 x 1/16" basswood. Chuck provided suggestions for making a planking jig which proved invaluable. I could have spent more time dressing the edges of the planks but hey, I'm learning ---- this is my first fully rigged POB ship.
Continuing on, the counter at the stern and transom were added.

This should be interesting, Popeye. I wasn't aware of the problem with the decking joints. Your idea to replace the deck with wood sounds like a really viable upgrade and I'm looking forward to seeing it....I'll be following.

Looks like an interesting project. With 3 builds it looks likes Popeye will need to be concerned about supremacy.
I second the motion on installing some proper fillers stem and stern.

After careful analysis of the data presented, it would appear that an alternative conclusion may also prove viable. Specifically, the glue joints in each case are stronger than the wood itself. It is suggested that further experimentation be conducted to determine the strength of the joints in the tension, rather than in the shear, mode. This might best be accomplished with the use of either an 'Instron' device or the application of opposing forces using two identical teams of draught horses
Pending the publication of the results of the modified experimental design, I shall continue to get the 'brown stuff' off prior to gluing

The ship's cat paid a visit. All important activities are done under her watchful eye ---- at least until rigging begins!!!!
The inner bulwark details such as cleats and belaying pin racks were added.

Just came across your log, Ken and wanted to wish you luck on your first wooden ship build.
Just one comment. I've worked quite a bit with basswood from MS. I always use a pre-stain on it if it is to be stained. It cuts down on blotchiness that you can run into without it. Also, Golden Oak, as is, is pretty dark. You might wish to consider cutting it down to 30-50% with a natural stain before applying. As with any finish, it's best to make a sample of what you want to do before committing to the entire model or section.

Nice to see you back in the fray. You've picked a handsome vessel for your first POB. And congrats on getting a flat bulkhead former !!!
Brian's suggestion to reinforce the bulkheads is a good one --- providing that reinforcement doesn't interfere with anything down the road. Check your plans and instructions to see what happens later in the build. Some kits use wooden blocks between the bulkheads. You might check the other Pride logs to see what's been done. Before you reinforce anything, take the time to triple check that your bulkheads are all square to the former and also level when sighting down the deck.
Fairing takes patience but establishes and important foundation for your planking. You can use one of the planks to check the 'run' of the planking along the bulkheads. It should be smooth and the taper you'll be sanding in allows for that smooth run without the plank being twisted into position. Check all up and down the hull as you go, working slowly. It takes some 'feel' and a good eye, but you'll get it.

She's not a dumb ship, she's your ship. Thanks for starting a log so we can follow. I think you have an idea now of the way suggestions can come in.
Be cautious.....you will almost always get several suggestions, all of them good. You need to find what works for you. So never be afraid to experiment..off ship.... before you dive in. Do a 'mock up' on some spare material and you'll see where you're going. Excellent suggestions on washing the plastic first BTW to remove any residuals that might interfere with your paint later. Blue tape or Tamiya.....I use them both
Always remember .... you are the Captain so all final decisions are yours alone.

Sterling did some boats but their main business was model airplanes. They made quite a few decent kits for control line and free flight flying. I think they have been out of the business for more than 30 years.

Time for a small update. Didn't want Andy to sail off without some fond memories.
We have ventured into the realm of running rigging (the brown stuff) with the installation of the spanker boom and gaff. Their addition has certainly filled out the stern.
It was a little hard getting the right background but I think you'll get the idea. She has now reached her full LOA.
Will be moving forward now with topmast halliards, etc. before we get to YARDwork .

Time for an update. Not that I've achieved a major milestone but I need to take a break to handle some 'real life'.
Most of the planking above the wales has been completed P/S. The gun ports on the gun and quarter decks are completed. I've touched up the gun port red and done the first coarse sanding.
There are still about 4 rows of planks to finish up the main wale. Then I'll be able to final sand and begin finishing on this section. The sweep ports will be installed, the double planking on the wales put on and I need to decide what will be painted and what will be stained. Treenailing is also on the docket.
Sounds like a plan ---- right into 2014!

Shot a quick photo of the completed case as it currently stands. As mentioned, all the finishing is complete and she's ready for final assembly. Syren's baseboard is screwed to the case base and she's very secure.
The glass has been ordered. Took one of the slotted uprights to the glass shop and the 1/8" fits perfectly. Glad I sanded out the grooves just a tad before finishing!
One final going over to make sure everything is clean and in Bristol fashion. Once the glass arrives we'll take that perilous voyage up the stairs to her final resting place. Don't laugh but I blew this 'transfer cruise' once back in '78 so I'm in no hurry to embark .
Oh......getting the ME case to this point took only about 12 hours. It is definitely sturdy and I like the way it came out. Considering I'm not a power tool guy, the investment was well worth it ---- especially if you catch one on sale.
Be back with the final installment when the glass comes in. For the first time in 21 months, I have nothing to do!!!!! This is intolerable. I have set up my lawn chair out by the mailbox and shall anxiously await the arrival of CONFEDERACY.
