    David -
Thank you for your email and your concern.  I looked at photo #2 and I see what you mean.  But then I checked the center keel top and bottom with a steel ruler and found the hull to be perfectly straight ( I had done this many times in the last few days during construction.  I don't think you need a new pair of glasses - I think that the camera was not directly over the hull and the photo is an oblique rather than a perpendicular...its an optical illusion that we see in photo #2.  The other "proof of the pudding" is that the slots in the planksheer line up perfectly with the bulwark stanchions, which can only happen if the center keel is straight.

Elia - Thanks for the "like"...I like your build log for Arethusa; especially the pictures that show how the transom and horn timbers are mounted on the center keel.  Those pictures explain things much more clearly than the instructions.

especially the photos at the bottom of page one and on page three.  She's a scatch build but very similar to Ben Latham.

Perhaps it would be better to post your question in the "Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck" forum and include a photo of your build to clarify what you are asking.  More people would see it and you would have a better chance of getting the answer you are looking for.

David, your offer to help is always appreciated.  I might be asking some questions when I get further along.

To answer your question, Greg, the 1:96 POB model has not reached the state of the framed model.  The picture below was taken a few days ago.  You are correct.  At a point after completion of the framing and deck structural work, the two models converged so virtually the same methods may be used on both to complete them.  You will note in the picture that bottom planking on the POB version has begun.  There is no bottom planking on the framed version.

The POB model was built from the beginning using similar methods to the framed model - such as upright construction, similar frame alignment  methods - but from different drawings.

    Hi everyone!

A big thank you to everyone who has shared in Rainbow's journey! Thanks for all your comments, feedback, advice and, of course, the Likes! Piet, Dave, Mike and Elia - a special thanks to you guys for your last comments.

Well, I can safely say that Rainbow is about 99% finished. I just need to do some touching up to the hull's paint job, as well a bit more cleaning up of the rigging, but essentially, she's finished. The mainsail has been attached to the mast. The genoa is set and the port side railing has been done.

    Here're the photos.

    Cheers

    Hi everyone

Many thanks to everyone for all of your Likes and comments, all of which are greatly appreciated.

A special thanks to Igor who sent me the packing film that I was able to use for the sails.  I've now had a go at using this material, with the results being shown below.

In terms of the reinforcement panels, I glued two layers of panels onto the sails, which served to provide strength and also rigidity to the sails.  I think the result looks ok and worth the effort.

The sails still require final fitting and cleaning up, but I hope you'll enjoy the photos.

    All the best!

    Cheers

    Greetings,

I was able to get some more time in at the bench today which is always a good thing, because the prospect isn't too good this coming week.  I finished mounting all the windows, mast, mast supports to the Day Cabin.  The yard was glues to the mast along with the cleats on each side at the mast base.

The Day Cabin hatch, non-skid, speed wrench and boat hook will be installed after a coat of primer has been applied, which will be at the mercy or the weatherman.  I still have to attach the blocks at each end of the yard then thread the flag halyards through each.

    Part 118 – Chain Pipes/Catheads/Topgallant Rail

Not a great deal of progress to report – just trying to get the model to the scope of volume I of the book.  The first picture shows the second chain pipe being inserted.  These reach down to the hold where the chain was stored.  From these openings the chain was run forward around the winch to the hawse holes.

In the next picture blanks for the catheads have been fitted.  The fancy rail is cut out where these pass through.  They will bolt through carlings on the inboard ends and into the framing at the side.

While sheaves were being cut into the catheads the pieces of the forecastle topgallant rail were cut, boiled and put into the fixture shown below to dry.

The rail will consist of a central bulwark plank with strips attached to the top on either side to simulate a thin top rail – much easier that to bend the 2” rail on its edge.  Sanding and painting make it look like a single rail – much like the multi-part rails along the sides.  In the next picture the rail has been assembled -  including short stanchions on the inside – and is being glued to the fancy rail.

Paint was scaped from the fancy rail for this.  The topgallant rail was then bolted through the pinholes, finish sanded and painted – as shown in the last picture.

This picture also shows the finished catheads installed – with their American plaque emblems painted on the ends.

These are very complex forms bending in three dimensions, and you make it all flow so smoothy. Beautiful work.

    Greetings,
Today was a rainy gloomy day here in Virginia Beach which means it's a good day to hit the building bench.  I managed to get the Day Cabin about 80% completed.  As you can see, I still have to paint the torpedo tubes.  Our weather hasn't been warm enough to get out on the porch for that yet, hopefully in the next week or two.  I included a shot with most of the toys placed on the deck just for kicks and a photo op.

    Cheers, Tim

I was perplexed with the wood quarter galleries and finally cut them off. I assembled the five parts of the galleries  ( with CA glue )and shaped them with much care. The glue broke loose a couple times but was helpful in allowing shaping as an assembly. This metal bends really nice without breaking.

Hello shipmates, regarding the deck extensions I found this explanation. The 4 balconies on the deck are used from the captain to execute maneuvers when the ship leaves or coming to  the port. Also the 4 balconies have gyro compass or magnetic compass depending on the season. They were also used  for observation from the officers  watching out for other ships or floating objects.

Hello shipmates, Elia-Igor-Patrick, I do thank you for your nice comments and also for the likes.
Regarding your question about the white boxes and  the deck extensions.... After doing some research on the web ( it is not mention in the manual) I find out.. absolutely nothing!! I believe you are right about the white boxes. I think that the deck extensions are some kind of observation points.Let me get back on this after doing some more research!! :)

    Dimitris,

Very nice work on the stern rudder housing - your typical high build standards! I had wondered what the little white 'box' objects were and where they went... Are they storage lockers? I also wonder what those little 'deck extensions' are to which you've installed hand rails and stanchions (all brass). Very nice work there.

    Hi everyone

There's not a hell of a lot left to do on Rainbow, apart from the final suit of sails, railings on the port side of the hull and finishing off the rigging. Well, tonight, I managed to do some of those niggly yet visually important things like Rainbow's beautiful gold cove-stripe which runs from bow to stern and accentuates her sheer line. As well as that, I added the strip of red that sits just above the waterline from bow to stern. As you'll see from the photos, I'll still need to clean up the paint on the waterline itself. It looks a tad rough. Lastly, I also added the flag pole which adornes Rainbow's stern (still requires finishing off though). I might leave that for another night, though.

    All the best everyone.

    Cheers

    Patrick

Thank you all for your kind words and my special thanks to SawdustDave for planning this event for a very worthy cause.  Children who have lost their fathers in a war.
Regardless how tragic this is for them, at least they have their father buried in a tangible grave they can visit.  I do not have that, and not till a rather recent time I did not fully know how my father died.  The part of the ship where his battle station is is the part that was hit by the Jap torpedo and in the resulting explosion that part just vanished, evaporated, with him and his shipmates.  Yes, I write it in the present tense, for a reason.
However, I now do have actual photographs of the wreck and the stern section just aft of his battle station, so now I also have a grave marker.  I do have closure of sorts but the hurt is still there.

So, I do fully understand the loss of these children, the mental anguish they have to deal with for a long time.  I was fortunate in that my father came home while his ship was being rearmed and fueled, to say his goodbyes.  One of the things he told me man to man was, that it is his duty to go out with the fleet to meet the enemy.  That word - duty - is burned into my memory.  No matter how unfair this world deals with us  These fathers have sworn an auth as well.  It was their duty to put their lives on the line, tragically, some did not survive.

Dave deserves our admiration and thanks for his time and effort to set up this affair in order to gen up some capital to give something back to these children as a small token of our gratitude for the ultimate price their beloved fathers paid.
That's why I did not hesitate to drive 450 miles to be an active part in that effort and share my story.

Sorry for the sob story but I felt all of you needed to know why Dave set this up, for there is a great need to help these children and of course the widows who are left behind.
I sincerely hope that more can be done in the future.

    Cheers,
