    Hi Pops
Hair dryers draw more electricity than anything - believe it! I holiday in a place which is off grid. Solar and PV panels provide the only power. Hair dryers are banned! They'll suck the life out of a fully charged battery in seconds and then we live in darkness.

As per my PM, you don't need a hair dryer or any other device. Wet the wood, clamp it around a curved object - a cup or some such thing - and wait for it to dry all by itself. Slow, dull but very gentle on the wood and effective.

Leanne,, I"m glad i can return something, for all the help i have had is what has made this build what it is.. The whole MSW forum is a godsend..

I look forward to seeing your build log surface

John thanks for the compliments, i have a tendency towards wanting perfection, which can be a downfall at times, i came to the conclusion that ratlines were probably not perfect anyway..

Anyway the second time they have come up neater, although i did redo a few to get it right, too much sag on some.. also had a flame up and two rungs burnt out that was exciting/scary..  one has gotta be quick with the flame if burning fuzz..

When i stand back and look at it all, the ratlines and shrouds are really making it look close to done..      Onto back stays next..  steady as she goes, as i want to soak up the last parts of this marvelous journey..   Ollie

Hey Ollie - it's all looking so great. I started at the beginning of your build log and have been copying & pasting all your posts and the various pieces of advice from other members to form a kind of 'practicum' for the Mermaid... leaving out most of the 'attaboy' type posts (as well deserved as they are), so far it's around 240 A4 pages. It's going to be such a useful reference as I work on mine   thank you to everyone who has contributed, your input has just added to the value of the quality work Ollie has displayed and achieved in his own right..
Now, just to find some time to get back to my own build...

Ok, rats are done on starboard side.. reasonably happy with it, oh ok... I cant complain for a first go

It's not as easy as one would like and i'm sure it will go smoother on second run..

I was brave enough to throw in a macro..  Black card helps find the fuzzy bits...
best if you dont use waterbased marker to mark out card, it runs when glueng..

I have a grip on the cow and clove hitch now, handy to know..   I used the principle of doing every forth run and then coming back to fill in..  Ollie

Photo Update Time Folks.. I know I know I do spoil ye all..

Deck Planking is going grand, am thinking about putting a Beech row down either side of the hatches (it will intersect the Companionway though.. the sideways 'hole'.. but that should be ok)
The Margin planks are not yet fixed in place as I may follow Jims method which allows the nibbling/joggling to be done 'off' the boat, also if I make a pigs ear of anything it will be easier to replace..   that said the Port/Stbd stern 'margins' are fixed down as they are the base for the deck planking!

I understand that 'full' un-butted planks are used between Hatches etc .. that is to say where a 'full' plank would fit, I appear to have done this between the Stern and the Aft most Hatch which I would imagine is incorrect, it will be easy to fix though !

As usual folks if ye have any thoughts suggestions please do shout them out.

Incidentally those are the Paper Templates I'm using for the Shift Pattern (more-so the one on the Right, the left is showing the Hatch Mast Holes, and is only a rough)

Nice, nice and very nice. You have avoided the hour glass effect on the shrouds and the rope colours look spot on.

I love how much this hobby is teaching me..   So i wanted to get my front stay on, then i'm onto ratlines..

I did a few tries at getting it right.. Re did it all in the end, doesnt take long..

The deadeye supplied was the same as others used on shrouds but it needed drilling out as the kit said to use the same 1mm black cord to reeve it..

i drilled the holes a bit too large, the deadeye looked a bit small and i actually didnt like the black, tried a few cords till i got looking good,, hand made my first dead-eye.. wasnt hard, made it a bit larger than supplied ones...

I'm taking my time now and very happy with the way she is looking..  Ollie

I think I'm going to leave sheer-pole off... I have learned so much from you all.. Next build will be a breeze ;-)

I added top mast rope. Not sure exactly how that operates in reality. Looks like it raises the top mast out of the cap ? Any.how it's fitted as instructed.. Rat line business is next. Front and back stays... Realising blocks could be refined down more, but all good..

Most don't do black ratlines I gather.. I read they were lightly tarred.. Will probably go with fawn.. Regards Oliver

I now have a total of 10 guns mounted.  I also added the bilge pumps and the aft gallows, although it isn’t glued.  I acquired a new spool of 28 gauge wire that is annealed and it is much stronger than the wire I was using that I got from a craft store.  It’s much easier to work with.  My method for rigging the guns is to do everything before the carriage, with barrel attached, is installed on the deck.  The holes on the bulwark are drilled and the eyebolt for the outhaul tackle is in; and the barrel attached to the carriage before installation.
I do agree that the whole process of setting up the carriage/gun is lengthy, but I try to break it up by doing 4 guns and then working on some deck furniture.  So I have 10 down and 4 to go.  Next up is the capstan – and I’m not pleased with the kit supplied one.  I’m going to have to create my own somehow.

After studying the plans and the guns that I have already constructed, I decided that the gun ports should be 3/8 square rather than 1/4 inch square.  That requires that the height of the bulwarks must increase by 1/8 inch.  This seems to be a common alteration (see Bob rafine’s log).  Also, the plans have the two aft guns practically right up against the housing front.  I can’t see how those guns could ever be fired without knocking down the ladder to the quarter deck or even the housing itself.  Plus, the captain would have to climb over the guns to exit his cabin.  So I moved the guns about 1/16 inch closer together and will move the housing front aft towards bulkhead #13.  I expect this will provide about an inch between the aft guns and the housing front.
In framing out the gun ports I also added several shims to assure that all measurements were in line and there were no gaps between planks.  This makes for a patchwork look - especially since I used walnut wood for the shims.  I didn’t create a solid bulwark wall as Bob (rafine) did and I hope I won’t regret it later.  But all in all I am pleased with the result.

I attach another photo showing the addition of the extra bulwark planks port and starboard.  And yes, there is a boat under all those clamps.
