Didn't get to go fishing today.  My wife had other ideas so in between lots of household chores, I managed to finish the second planking on the starboard side of the hull.
I ran into a bit of trouble as I neared the end and the last plank had so many undulations in it to fit the final gap, that it looked more like a snake than a plank!
I cant believe how long this took me.  Either I'm just very slow or there is a simpler way that I'm yet to figure out.
I've given it a rough sand but will wait until I've done the other side before doing a final sand.

In the DVD instructions it says to give the whole hull and deck a spray coat of satin estapol.
Should I do this before adding the wales, stanchions and deck railing caps or after they are all glued on?

I'm really enjoying building this model but cant wait to get to the deck fittings etc.  This planking caper is hard work!
    Cheers
    Rod

Well another 3 hrs went by on the companionway. Time flys when your having fun that is for certain..   Working in 0.5 of mm or less tolerences is testing at times, i usually work within 1mm tolerences only... not fractions of mm

So I built the doors in one part first, to aid with getting everything flat straight and square.. The grid is excellent for this.. I used pins and cut them at desired length plus some, so can be sanded flat and even as required.. .. Cut bigger then work smaller and mark off the actual job are some of my tips,..

I added a "lug" you may call it, to prevent hatch being hable to come off whilst model is in transit or being fondled. The hatch can slide off once right hand door is open but will not come off otherwise ( in open position or closed with doors closed.).

I have chosen an off-white for interior ceilengs etc.. There is lots more tidying to do, but very happy..
    ------------------------------------
0.5mm drill bit in the drill press. I suggest using a pin to indent wood first to aid in drill not bending and vibrating.

I also found some of dads really old timber and cut some down, its hard as nails, i think it's maple or mahogany. will find out. I have lots of tools but they are not designed to work this fine, i cut the strips on a home made bench ripping saw, i like to make do with what i have.. I do have a nice dremel that will come in handy. no micro mills or lathes in this shed..

    Regards Ollie

Nicely done David, especially where you differed from the kit's instructions with the linings of the Companionways - yours look much better.

That kit-supplied Windlass looks like nice quality - certainly better than some of the cast metal offerings of other kits .

    Hello every-one
Now onto the Figure head and head rails . I had a lot of cutting to  get the figure head to sit properly (she was painted with a gold leaf and attached with 5 minute epoxy ) . I set my figure head more horizontal than what it shows so the gown flows better with the heads rails . The head rails need to have a curve in them so some soaking and drying is needed .

The channels were next on . I wanted to put these on now so i could get a coat of vanish on the hull .

Now i can tackle all of the deck furniture .
The main  companionway was assemble with the kit parts and then planked in the Tanganika on the sides , rear and top(i planked the top even tho they say to leave it ) . A strip of 2x2 walnut was placed around the edge of the roof . 2X2  shaped walnut was glued on the vertical edges and some 2x1 around the base . I changed the way the doors were to be done from the instructions because i couldn't see how they would function , especially the Forward companionway . I used some strips of 1 mm thick lime wood stained a Baltic stain . The part of the hinges that bolt to the frames are made out of black card . Once finished a coat of Matt varnish was applied .

The Forward companionway was done the same way . Again i strayed from the plans here . Especially how the hatch cover was done . They have the front trim running all the way across the front .

Finally managed to find some time to continue with my hull planking.
After doing the "easy" planks I had to begin the tapering process.
I divided the remainder of the hull up into three sections using a planking batten as suggest in the article on MSW and this seemed to make it a bit easier.
After what seemed like 5 hours I had completed a grand total of 10 planks!
I hope I get faster at this!
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the way its turning out.  After a good sand it should come out pretty smooth.
If its raining tomorrow, I wont be going fishing so hopefully can finish off this side of the hull, so long as the better half doesn't find a whole lot of other jobs for me.
    Cheers
    Rod

Thanks Guys, really enjoying the deck...  Adding another 4 hours to log...

I am wondering about gangway and skylight.  Is it most realistic if decking goes underneath or do they sit on top of the decking like most other deck fixtures such as windlass?

Thanks for looking and Merry Christmas and holiday season to all. Happy crafting..  Ollie
