ulrich reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
I have also tried to make a grating (it is made from longitudinal wooden laths - they were also used on English ships from that period), but I do not have any accurate plans or images that could help me with a realistic appearance. Now I'm thinking about design of seats of ease, I have several options but I am not sure, which of them is suitable for Royal Katherine from 1670... If you have historically more accurate information, I will be very grateful for your help.
Best regards,
Doris

Beautifully realized, Doris.
The earlier the subject, the less information we have. Have you looked at photographs of Vasa's head to see the seats of ease on that ship? Although Swedish, it is almost contemporary to Royal Katherine. That may give you a guide.
If I may comment, the Vale painting seems to have the figure and tip of the knee of the head slightly more angled up than in the Sheldon model. You might want to check that.

Hello everyone and thanks for the kind comments.
The carving and ornaments on this model exceed my abilities considerably.
They are a very well executed commissioned work and correspond exactly to my ideas.
The execution was made in boxwood.

ulrich got a reaction from Canute in Simulating tiny chain
I have used several different sizes of chain on my Cutty Sark (1:78), down to about 47 l/in. However, instead of chain for the the sheets, I used bead cord. I obtained this (nylon?) material from my local jewelry store. It comes in diff. colors and sizes and really looks like chain considering the small scale it is to represent. The drawback is that it might twist when its stretched.

ulrich reacted to archnav in Gunport Stops - only mentioned by Steel 1805 - Identification ?
Please pay attention that the pictures of the port stand upside down !
First picture shows the gun deck port
This picture shows the port from a lower angle...the "Stop Beam" or "bumper" is clearly visible
Next is the left side of the port which is the side of one of the frames - look at these thin pieces of wood, forming a slot for a washboard ?
Next comes the sketch of the port seen from above like in the first picture
Here you can see the much smaller rebates for the (missing) port lid - this don`t matches with Steel`s dimensions !
Last picture shows the port as once being intact - note again the small rebates for the lid and the fact, that the ship was built without any waterway !
I hope, that this discussion here will go on. Thanks guys for your help to find some conclusive answers - thank you really very much

ulrich reacted to Thistle17 in Atlantis by Thistle17 - FINISHED - Robbe
Hard to believe I am finally approaching the end of the deck cabins for Atlantis. They have been mini projects in themselves that never seemed as though there was an end in sight. Fundamentally the deck furniture woodwork is done save the main cabin sky lights and handrails for this and the aft cabin. The body wood is boxwood and the roof and some trim is mahogany. They have been coated with Minwax wiping varnish. The last appointments will be the running lights, air vents and hatch handles. I have not decided how to treat the porthole and cabin "glass" quite yet. I was reading McCaffery's book and he suggests .025 microscope slide glass. Only timidity I have is how do I accurately cut the porthole glass. Secondly the back side has to be opaque as I did not finish the interior of cabins.
One final note. I took some stylized liberty with the furniture. Call it aesthetic license or whatever they just looked better to me. Note the "gauges" on the helm (aft cabin). I went on line and found an actual boat panel I liked, then modified it and reduced it to scale. Maybe that is why it has taken me way too long to get to this point!

ulrich reacted to vaddoc in A lathe for masts and spars
Last time I used a drill and a bearing. The drill was on a simple wooden support to keep the chuck horizontal and the bearing was within a piece of scrap MDF screwed to my disc sander. Worked pretty well.

A lathe is not required. Decent spars can be made with a drill (corded or battery) and sand paper. Duff
