Floyd -   in this case I am working under the assumption that what is provided in the plans IS a 2D sail template.  In short, my CAD drawings don't take this into account, they assume that a bunch of flat strips of cloth were sewn together to make a bigger flat sheet.  I will shape the finished product into wind-filled sails after cutting them out and adding details.  I don't know how I'll do that just yet, but there are lots of interesting approaches to be found on MSW.

Pete - thanks for stopping by and for the kind words.  I love the quote in your signature.

As promised, I temporarily attached the the main and fore sails to check for rough fit and to get a feel for where I might be headed with them.  Here are the photos.

    Thanks,
    Bob

Birthday was great, thanks, with the exception of the ATV I rolled at 2am!  I am really thinking about repainting the deck on mine, the white paint didn't go on well with the sealer.  It looks weathered and all but I may need to do a touch up.  What are your plans for the paint scheme?  The balsa blocks in the front of the boat make it tough to stain with that nasty vertical line on both sides.

Thanks Pete, it's been a fun project so far. I haven't done any more with it since my last update but plan to work on it more this weekend. I just finished a Midwest Products Peapod lobster boat I'll be posting about later.

Hi everyone. Many thanks for the great feedback and for the photo above. If you're not aware, the Dorade website is also a great refrence for the ship, with many detailed photos of the ship - http://dorade.org.

As for the deck, well, it has been glued permanently on. The reason being that there is a considerable amount of the hull that has been cut away to expose the interior, as well as being viewable through the open deck, that, I thought that would suffice. Well, I hope that's the case, anyway.

Thanks for the comment about the winches. There was no easy way for me to do them, so I did them by hand. Twirling them in my finger with a file. Slow, but brass is pretty soft and once you get into a rhythm, it's pretty easy.

I am also definitely an admirer of Donald McNarry! I can only dream of reaching his standard of workmanship. Phil Reed and Llyod Mc Caffrey are also people I admire.

I'll definitely post more photos as the build progresses!

    Pete,
You're out of the starting blocks! I notice that you have the keel set at an angle to the building board. I guess that's to account for the drag? And do the instructions tell you to do that, or is that your initiative?

    Nice little boat, BTW.

Thank you very much Hamilton, Pete and Keith.

The kit provided stripes for the deck are not in full length. I must use small stripes.

You are absolutely right she is a monster. But it's a fantastic kit.

    pete48 reacted to Omega1234 in Dorade Omega1234 - FINISHED - yawl
Hi everyone. Ever since I first read about the famous Sparkman and Stevens' designed yawl (built over 80 yrs ago snd she's still racing), I've wanted to build a model of her. So, after thirty years of dreaming, I've now started to build a scratch built, miniature, fully detailed model, complete with interior accommodation, etc. The model is a true miniature, ie only 15 cms approx in hull length.

As you can see, I have tried to adhere to full sized construction practices by using a built up keel and bent frames. All the wood was cut using my miniature table saw, which, is a lot of fun and satisfying, not to mention, cost effective.

I still have a long way to go before I finish the masts, winches, blocks and rigging, but it's been a hell of a lotta fun so far.

I hope you enjoy the model and photos. I will post more pics as work progresses.

Comments, feedback and suggestions are most welcomed!

pete48 reacted to ccoyle in Bluejacket: Herreshoff 12 1/2
The first thing you need to ascertain is which Herreshoff kit are you building?  The Boy's Boat is one of the designs BJ acquired when they purchased the old Laughing Whale company years ago.  Since then, BJ has updated some of the Laughing Whale designs, but (to the best of my knowledge) not all of them.  The old Laughing Whale kit was not true to the original Herreshoff design, in that the kit uses the typical POB construction method (like in your Midwest lobster smack), and this will be plainly visible on the finished model.  I used to have the Laughing Whale version years ago, and the only thing I can dimly remember that might have been caution-worthy is that the number of bulkheads was on the small side, with extensions that could probably be snapped off somewhat easily, but this is true for many small boat kits.  Other than that, the materials were good.  The instructions were sparse - nothing like what you would get in a Midwest kit, for example.  BJ do have a good reputation for customer support, so if you ran into difficulties you could most likely get help from them.

thanks for the nice words Pete
I remember someone saying to basically stay ahead of the build, as I was looking at my build last night getting ready to finish fairing the hull kind of getting my plan in place, I noticed a couple of things with the sizes of some of the pieces. Then I remembered one of the Phantom builds the builder made his own gratting (think thats the right word) because the size was off scale
can someone point me to a web link, or a link in here so i can review scale. I know its more than just 1:to whatever number i think there is a conversion in there somewhere.
I dont want this to just be "My first build" I want to do it right

Thank you Cap'n Bob, Pete, Wayne, John and Harvey for having followed this build and your comments, it's really appreciated.

This particular model had several reasons for me to build.  First was that my wife and I were going to build a simple version of a sloop but due to certain circumstances we had to shelf that idea.  Thus came the need to build a model of a real sloop I would build if I were a lot younger with unlimited resources.  The other reason was to use this project to get used to working with wood in order for me to design and build a mid 17th century Dutch VOC ship.

That project was started soon after this sloop was completed and can be seen under the name VOC ship Surabaya below my signature.  The challenge (to me) was to design my own ships and see how they would come out.  This to me is the ultimate in scratch building.  Yes, I made mistakes and learned from them but that is all part of the fun in scratch building.

My wish is to see more people build a scratch model instead of a kit, not that there is anything wrong with kit building but there is something special in doing the research on a ship or boat and then translating the drawings and paintings into a model.  There is really very little difference in these processes, you just have to make your own parts.

Well John, I think that our first port of call will be Bermuda.  We'll cast off from Flagler Beach and sail to Jacksonville via the Intercoastel and then south - east across the Atlantic.  Then from there, who knows - - - Costa Rica?
    Ah, just dreaming my friend.

Okay, now to figure out how to put this model in the gallery.

Cheers to all and happy modeling

It's the rear hull sections, the bow is easy as you just knife away the balsa blocks and when you are close to done use low grid sand paper.

In this post you will see I followed the previous advice and I soaked the wood in rubbing alcohol (my preference over water) and also cut out a card stock piece to help me trim the wood down.  It worked out great and finished perfect.  Hope that helps.

Have you seen the plans (admittedly poor resolution) from Chapelle?  I think your rudder design is accurate.

Haven't updated this in a while, I tend to get lazy with my forum threads.

I have made some progress since the last update. I have built and installed the seats and floor, installed the rub rail and toe rail, and installed the cockpit coaming.

Now I am in the process of drafting a new sail plan. I am not completely satisfied with the rigging plan, plus my girlfriend (who the model is for) likes a gaff rigged setup more.

All that's left is to hang the rudder, place the deck fitting (which I will wait until I figure out the rigging plan to do), and rig the sails.
