Hello all, I am intrested in building the Bluejacket Herreshoff 12 1/2 as a future build, and was wondering if anyone on M.S.W. has built one, I would like to know how well the kit is made ( I know Bluejacket has a good reputation) Any insight would be helpful

Thank you,

The first thing you need to ascertain is which Herreshoff kit are you building?  The Boy's Boat is one of the designs BJ acquired when they purchased the old Laughing Whale company years ago.  Since then, BJ has updated some of the Laughing Whale designs, but (to the best of my knowledge) not all of them.  The old Laughing Whale kit was not true to the original Herreshoff design, in that the kit uses the typical POB construction method (like in your Midwest lobster smack), and this will be plainly visible on the finished model.  I used to have the Laughing Whale version years ago, and the only thing I can dimly remember that might have been caution-worthy is that the number of bulkheads was on the small side, with extensions that could probably be snapped off somewhat easily, but this is true for many small boat kits.  Other than that, the materials were good.  The instructions were sparse - nothing like what you would get in a Midwest kit, for example.  BJ do have a good reputation for customer support, so if you ran into difficulties you could most likely get help from them.

Thank you Chris, I do have the Herreshoff Sensible Crusing Designs book, with the lines and offset table for the 12 1/2 and thought that the kit may be quicker than lofting and getting scantlings together. It is kinda what I thought, that I would have to do a scratch build to get it right. I also thought BJ would have better plans and instructions (I have not built a BJ kit) So I thank you again for this valuable insight.

Pete,

I built it many years ago, and had  great time with it. It even came out okay :o. I'll try to get a couple pictures of it in the next couple of days.

The only things I changed were the adding some frames along with the bulkheads (since they're visible from the cockpit) and added some reinforcing blocks to attach the chainplates.

Have fun!

Thank you Harvey, I appreciate that . I am thinking that I may do a scratch build on this one, Then I can keep the scale at 1/2 " = 1'-0"  ( this is the scale of my Lobster Smack

Was looking forward the Bluejacket build since Iam in the market to buy and need that little push to order

<runs up from behind and 'push'> If that's the one you want, go for it.  Open a build log and you'll find help will pop up.

And I'm looking forward to the scratchbuild in a smaller scale. One of my "goals" is to create a fleet of 1:64 or 1:48 Friendship Sloops from the different sets of FS plans I have (I think I have 4 or 5 different ones).

Buzzard Bay Boys' Boats are a lot of fun to sail. The only change I've seen people make (to the real ones) is to square off the bottom of the rudder. As designed, the rudder doesn't seem to have enough "bite" and this change seems to help.

Thanks,

Harvey

Pete, I just realized you're going to have to be careful with scratchbuilding these small boats. In the last few minutes I've thought of 2 others that I've love to see in 1:24 or 1:48 or 1:64-A Murray Peterson Coasting Schooner and a John Alden Malabar 2. Both are 42' on deck and would make fun little projects (and much less costly and labor intensive than the real thing!)

Saw it. Looking good. I had considered building one in college but couldn't get the lofting to work out. It's more boat than I wanted full sized at the time too so that wasn't an option. I waited and am now building a Catspaw full sized. Still plug away at my Revell Cutty Sark in 1:96 when I can though.
