I've done some scraping using metal scrapers but not glass.   I have heard that are builders who do this.  They take an old piece of window glass, tap it with a hammer and shatter it.  They keep the big pieces and dump the little ones.  The advantage is that often the glass will shatter such that lots of different shapes and curves are formed.

For myself, I see that leading to DNA and red stains all over my ship.

Wow, guys, Thanks ever so much for all the birthday and well wishes, it's very much appreciated

Jason, I've got a long way to go yet to catch up to you (and that's even after taking a few short cuts like not replacing the stem and stern post, as you did so nicely)

Kevin, thank you very much, but don't feel the need to apologize, if it wasn't for all the good cheer around here, I'd miss my birthday too! (Just another day on the boat )

Popeye, good to hear from you again too! I wish I could say for certain it's only a few weeks but.......

Bill, Elijah and Chris, thank you all as well.

Hey guys, thanks for all the well wishes.

So the "allegedly" has now been expanded, possibly until the end of June, which I really don't mind too much, as long as I get some time up north at the lake in July.

Andy, have a good trip and make a few dollars to buy more tools and wood.  That seems to be the way it goes...   Cellphones are the bane of our existence.

So.... One of you, not sure who, was hoping too hard that I'd get back to work soon!
Seems like fate has a sick sense of humour, as I was just getting underway to head up to the cottage for the May two-four weekend (aka Victoria Day weekend), the first long weekend of the summer, when the stated objective is to do as much damage to as many cases of 24 bottles of beer as possible, the dreaded phone call came... Stupid hands free blue-tooth... No excuse to not answer....

But I digress, at this point I'm not going to say not to work, even if it is only for a few weeks (allegedly). So I'm off first thing tomorrow morning, and as usual all building comes to a halt, and I was so looking forward to playing with that most excellent castello boxwood that arrived in the mail just a couple days ago... Oh well

Looks great! I get your point about running full lengths. As the first layer this might be a good place to "practice" using some scale lengths. That way it won't be a first attempt on the finished layer. The same goes for beveling. And remember, you can sand, fill, etc.. on this layer. The finish layer is like a fine veneer, any ridges or variances will telegraph through to the finished layer.

Woodo, Thanks so much for choosing to follow along. Very kind of you - welcome aboard.

    Updated progress on mainmast;

Slid-in that middle sleeve filler at upper part of joined mast halves.

Cut the end bits which will house the pulleys

Measured the needed angle so that the crow’s nest will remain horizontal given the rake of the mainmast.

X’d out where I needed to cut the indentation groove to fit the two side half pulley bits.

Measured where I should glue the first piece allowing room for the platform cross braces.

    Glued the first one.

PS: I think that my measurements were a bit off at the mast part that will be above the platform base. Looks too short? I will have to be creative when I add the mast cap and the metal sleeve that will wrap around the mast just under the cap. Hmmm L

Your x-acto should do it..use multiple cuts to work your way through the material, never too much pressure. Work the tool with your fingers and wrist with forearms resting on a surface. Patience and a controlled hand will serve you well

    Hi Mike
Usually there is a sheet of paper or 2 showing the laser cut
sheets and parts with numbers on them, have a look at your plans.

As for getting the parts out, yes cut the waste material with whatever is needed,
but for the timber parts try and keep usable pieces of timber,
in case you need them to make something.

Yeah no rush, I have been building mine for 5 years so far, but I am doing a lot of scratch building and I only work on it on the weekends when I am not doing other stuff.
I remember when I built my first wooden ship - a Corel Victory, it took me two years and I was working on it most nights
Just ask if you need some advice, just send a personal message on here, or if you post a question on your build you will usually be flooded with advice from lots of people. Great site this!

sharp tools and a ready supply of single malt scotch whisky is essential in my book.....especially the latter.....and learn to stop and walk away when things start to go wrong, there is always later.

    Hi Guys,

This is my very first build log! As per the thread title, I'm building the HMS Endeavour, by Occre.

As I have never, ever built a model ship before, this is going to be very much a discovery process by me and hopefully I achieve a successful outcome!

My ship arrived today by courier. I have unpacked it and attaching a couple of pics here. If I am not following the rules or build log protocol, please let me know. I'm fairly new to this forum too.

Firstly, I have a set of English instructions. I noticed some folks in other threads saying that didn't receive English instructions by Occre.

Secondly...these instructions are very daunting! I am going to be doing a LOT of reading before I start this thing. Having said that, yes, the start of the build might be a couple of weeks away as I am still waiting on some tools to arrive. I have plenty of woodworking tools, but not much in the way of small tools required for this. For example, my set square and spirit level, they're quite massive and not appropriate for this ship. So I have ordered over eBay some smaller versions of certain things. Once everything has arrived then I will kick the build off! Which is good, gives me more time to do some researching.
i've tried to read as many of the rules here as possible and I understand the part about not having too much "noise" in build logs...but if it doesn't upset the mods, I'm happy for you guys to offer advice and or criticism in here. Your knowledge and experience is invaluable to me!

Never the less, this will be my build log!
    Please...wish me luck...

    *gulp*
    *deep breath*

    Here goes!
