    Hi Vivian,

She is looking really great, nice neat work on the anchors and their rigging and I think your cannons turned out OK. You will soon be onto the real fun part, the rigging.
By the way have your wooden deadeyes turned up yet?

Keep up the good work and the pics coming

Hey all! Did some progress today and I´ll bring some pictures on.

First of all, worked on my anchors, and don´t know why found them cute. Some time sanding, some time polishing, then painted them black, as all my metallic fittings. The wooden part was made from two 3x3mm pieces tied together - all again, sanded, varnished and closed with the ropes, waxed to get dark.

Had the water pump to do the same, so, I did. Sanded, polished and painted it black. Fixed it to the appointed place on plans and it looks that way:

Mizzen alone don´t have the power over mizzen sail, so, there it is, a tail to hold the sail.

The rudder got its driving bar and got some seccurity ropes (so I think it is). Bar made from a 4x4mm wooden strip, sculpted to fit in. Ropes got trough brass fittings attached to the hull and rudder.

Finished my anchors and windlass with ropes and all. Satisfied with the results.

Did that oops fixing to my cannons and learned a bit about making holes without thinking about the use for them...

Now my caravel got that look

Tomorrow I hope will work on sails, to let them ready for the final effort. I´ll varnish the hull once more, with a marine varnish, after filling the small gaps that are still there, too. Seems she´s getting ready to explore the Atlantic.

As of today. I´ve got some minor work to do before putting it to varnish, but hope to get there till next weekend.

Noob error - did not put much thought about the deck and when was planking, let it go the full lenght. Now I see I should have cutted them so my planking would not look like a fake one. Thinking on put some lines and dots on that, before varnishing - don´t know how it will look like after that, but...

Think I´ll be more careful next time with bringing the planks together. Got this minor gap to fill, now.

Well. That´s it. Would love to have some critics on what I´ve done so far. When I look to this hull I get very proud of it, but I´m not so naive that I can´t get some directions from more experienced builders. ^^

When I modeled houses I always had the thougth of putting a removable top floor or roof, so the interior could be explored by the client/viewer. It´s like magic, when u take out the roof and people can look inside to perceive details they couldn´t just one minute before. That´s something I´m thinking on doing with my next ships. Anyways, the windows are something magical too, to peer inside a tiny openning and see how wonderful Doris´ work is.

    (well, I´m really enchanted ^^)

Well, let´s talk about tiny pieces and a lot of work. After returning to my ship, I got her waxed with bitumen, as I said before. The general look is like that:

The hull got a dirtier aspect, which gave some spirit to the caravel. Then, I got to the canons. They came in lead, as those deadeys I hated - painted them in black. The canons base were made of laser cut wood, so I sanded it to give a hand made quality and since the canons are from the 1400´s, I kind of liked the result - shaby, a bit bitten and no one alike.

As the canon base, the ladder came in laser cut wood. The first impression was of a child´s toy. After a lot of sanding and varnish, it got like that:

The next images got the same process

Atm I made some holes on deck´s rail, for water draining. Still working on them. That´s all for now. ^^

    And today´s work.

Finished oppening up the deck´s rail. On the original plans the ship got 4 on each side, but after seeing some images, decided to put only 2 on each side, on the lower portion of deck (considering the ship on still waters).

Fixed my anchor machinery, holder, whatever (don´t know the term in english, yet

Varnished and gave some glue to my canons. Loved them, by the way.

After reshaping and painting some fittings, fixed them next to masts. They´ll hold the lanteen sails ropes so they can be maneuvered.

Then I got some real work. The kit lacked the rudder brackets, which on plans are shown as brass fittings. So, I improvised those things from some nails and stuff to get like that:

Used the drill to soften the sides and bring them fit to the rudder and got this

And then fixed the rudder to my ship. My main will was to have a functional rudder, not a still one.

Got my ladders to the ship, but had to cut out some steps from it.

And that´s all for today. Tomorrow I´ll make ready my sails while I wait for my deadeys (can´t really understand why it gets so long for those to reach me). Well, final picture is my complete set of tools till now. ^^

Ulises, hope I get some more soon, 3 more ships already coming. =D

Al, São Paulo is a busy city, a place to work and make money that never sleeps. I found my peace, now, when I work on the caravel; think she gets me to another dimension - it´s a time to forget my problems. You´re doing a great work, I´m sure u´ll get yours all pretty and neat. =D

Sam, they´ll be mobile, but not by wheels. The canons in this case were just put on the carriage (a simple base, really) and adapted from cannons from fortresses. The gunners had to move them through sheer force. Since the small caravels had great manoeuvrability, the cannons usually hadn´t to move. Later, the "caravela de armada" got new guns with a firing deck and all. Well, as for the tools, still don´t know what is to have too much

Vivian, thanks for posting these pics.  I am learning a lot just from looking at photos.  I need to visualize things before I really get a grasp of what the H someone is talking about.  I wanted to say thanks as well for your recent encouraging reply to my Bounty build.  And also to mention (off the wall) that the gentleman who gifted me this kit lived in Sao Paulo for many years.  In fact his wife was born there.  The world grows smaller every day; despite Mauna Kea's efforts to enlarge it.

I am far from an expert but I have never seen cannon carriages like that before, unusual.
