Well, I have reached a milestone of sorts so I thought it was time for an update.

The five double frames are complete.  They took a long time to finish but by the end I had a good system down and the scarphs and chocks had gotten easier and more consistent.  The single frames should go much faster.  But who is in a hurry, this is a hobby after all.

I used a variation of the mobbsie/Grant method for the scarphs.  The razor saw was used to cut the side line and a tiny Ryoba that I bought in Japan decades ago to cut the long side.  With the futtock in the vice the saw lays really flat and it is simple to cut to the razor saw line.  Then a quick dressing with a file and it is done.

    The five double frames.

This is one of the middle frames.

The D frame, which is the front end of the model, has a coat of Wipe On Polly just to see how it will look.  The contrast with the ebony bolts is nice.

If you click on this macro photo to enlarge it you can actually see the sandpaper scratches in the ebony bolts.  180 grit was used.  Photography stuff fascinates me.

Only rough sanding has been done, the plan is to do all the finish work at once when the single frames are complete as well.  I do not plan to attach anything until she is a lot further  along.

Thanks to all those who follow and the "Likes".  Special thanks to Grant and mobbsie for all their help.

I have been practicing on my Sherline lathe so that I can get get good enough to turn the cannon and mortar out of ebony when the time comes.

Hey Carl, Grant, mobbsie and Greg,

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.  I really am enjoying the process.

Grant, I do most of the cutting in the morning and assembly in the afternoon.  The Admiral requires a little attention in the evening.  That keeps my shipyard privileges in place.

mobbsie, don't worry I will make those scratches go away.  I certainly could not see them with the naked eye.  I did not know that they were there until I enlarged the photo.

Greg, full speed ahead for me is dead slow for Grant and mobbsie.

Managed to make some progress.  The inner bulwark planking on the quarterdeck has been completed.

Now we'll concentrate on getting the rails on all around.

Hope everyone is ready for the (long awaited) change of seasons. Here, in the Northern Hemisphere, it means a decrease in shop time as the great outdoors beckons.  But I hope you all have had a healthy and productive winter 'building season'.

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.   Anything worth doing is worth doing correctly and since I am a late bloomer in this area it does take some practice.  I attempted model ship building 15 years ago or so and without the MSW community I stalled pretty quickly.  Now whenever help is needed it is right here.  Special thanks to Grant and mobbsie who started this group build and kindly allowed me to tag along.  I learn something new from them every day.

I guess it's about time I did something....

Gunport stripe (for lack of a better nomenclature) has been sanded, re-sanded, ports cut, re-sanded some more, gaps filled and sanded again...  I've applied one coat of wipe on poly to the stripe and to the counter to protect it.

Anyway... onward to the port side.

Once the port side is finished, I'll add the ebony chain wales and the French version of the billboard which runs from the stem, past the first port to the start of the second port.

Mobbsie has posted a little bit of research on his log, dug up for us by Wayne, that suggests the use of "nails". And I agree with Mobbsie's rationale of the weight/shock factors requiring extra strength - at least it makes sense to me......

.....which is a roundabout way of saying, I'm going to go ahead as previously described and shown in my test piece!

Mobbsie - your definition of being "behind" is, shall we say, questionable?!!! Knowing you, you'll have the shell room finished by tomorrow evening!

    Hi Grant,

Your test piece has come out really well mate, I reckon you should go for it.

I'm going to be a little controversial here and say that I think nails were used rather than bolts and certainly not treenails. When you consider the weight the clamps had to take plus the shock and pressure applied when the Mortar was fired, nails would have a tighter grip and a lot less play over time.

Bolts or Nails it makes no difference at this scale as they will be the same size and the same system will be used.

I shall be a little ways behind you for a while whilst I wait for my LoS to arrive.

Hmmm... Toni added "bolts" to her deck clamps.  Danny apparently didn't or he just didn't cover the installation.  Remco treenailed.  Alexandru appears to have bolts.    From just that sampling,I'd say go either way... but, logic to me says bolting would be more secure.  Or maybe a mix..

Edit:  I realized that this probably isn't much help... not definitive.

Mark's post suggests to me that perhaps there is plenty of room for "interpretation" here.

So, I've gone ahead and prepared a test piece using a "spare" Mortar Pit Deck Clamp.  This has used 0.5mm Copper Wire, using the template I showed earlier, then sanded back, blackened with LoS, and then one coat of Wipe-on Poly applied.  I've just placed it on the model to get an idea of what it will look like in situ.  In the picture, you can see the treenails in the planking below as a comparison. Pay no attention to the light coloured "dots" on the right hand end of the test piece - they were from earlier treenail tests.

I think this is looking okay - not overdone.  Grateful for any and all opinions/comments.

Thanks to one and all for your very kind comments and hitting the like button.

A very happy birthday David ( scratch ), hope you get whatever it is you want mate.

Wayne, thanks very much for input on this matter and the information. It's leading me to believe that Nails were used rather than Bolts or Treenails.

I shall be following Grants method and sizes and to be honest there is no difference between Bolts or Nails. Cheers Grant for steering me in the right direction.

Once I get my LoS I can carry on with them but not for just now. I will however be working on the Shell room and I must thank Rusty for the heads up on the need to be extra vigilant on the measurements with regard to the Shell Room and Mortar Pit Beams.

    Thanks Guys and Be Good
