Very impressive kit. Are you planning on leaving the acre of wood planking just varnished or are you painting the hull?

I am Saving planking for Dr. Per. I hope he has a remedy.

Yes that is one of the options in the design. But I already have 2 R/C boats. So I am going to leave this one for display only.

Would that be big enough to convert to RC?

So let me share some of my first impressions of this kit. First off have I said this boat is a monster? She is very big! I am looking forward to a lot of nice detail.
The pictures below are the result of about 90 min of tinkering. All of the parts fit together vary nicely with almost no sanding. You will note that the laser burn marks are still evident. What you see in these pictures is also almost completely without glue. Everything is snug and tight. It to some force to get it together, but I am ready for sanding and fairing.
The plans are excellent. The instruction are good. They could be a bit more detailed, but they come in several pamphlets. One for each language. I forgot to mention that each bundle of planking is labeled! With dimensions and what it is to be used for. I have not seen this on any other model. The labels are in 4 languages.
PS you will note the mat it is laying on is 33 inches wide! This is a whale of a model. Not sure what the admiral will say when I try to display it in the living room.

Well when you are getting frustrated with your current project there are only a few choices on what to do:
1. You could continue on. From My experience bad things happen in this situation
2. You could burn the model and give up
3. Or you could just put it away for a bit and turn to another project. The only downside of this is the evil stares from the admiral. and she says "Another project?!!"
Elsewhere on this site there is another log of this wonderful kit. Seeing that build reminded me what was on my shelf. One thing led to another and now you will see the results.
Being a huge fan of America's Cup I just had to have a nice kit of a famous boat from that series. I think this is one of the most beautiful boats there is.
So without Further ado I give you the Endeavour!

Stunt flyer - Not yet.
Sam - No one came! I guess the great weather gave everyone something else to do. But I did complete the fairing and started to shape planks. But it has been a busy work week and I am traveling this weekend. So this build will have to wait until Monday.

Floyd - Have you done any planking yet?

Scary & Tedious yes! But the club is coming over today so we will all be doing something similar.

Looking good Floyd.
You are now doing the part I hate most. I find it so confusing/tedious.
Good luck.

So let me offer an update as we go into the weekend.
The first picture shows the false deck and scrap for grabbing (thank you Mike)
The last Picture shows it in the vice. Let the Fairing Begin!

Dave - Thanks for the tip. I thought I would post some pictures of my variation of your solution. Besides what else can I do while waiting.
As you can see I put some Alcohol is a squirt bottle and then I kept the Q tips wet for about 90 min.

Several members of my clubs have been doing the Longboat and have had the same problems. It was discovered that if you only use white glue you can redo a frame or part. One member had to redo most of his frames. By saturating the part in iso alcohol and wrapping it the glue dissolved after a couple of hours. In your case it might no take as long. Do one frame at a time.

Thanks Dave. I guess I may not finish the fairing this weekend.

Try isopropyl alcohol regular strength. If you can get 99% that would be better. Just keep the joint wet or wrap it in plastic wrap. After a while the glue will disolve.

Ok so how do you loosen PVA that had had a chance to dry for a couple days?

Also, pardon a bit of critics, looks like the second bulkhead from the top is not fully inserted, it looks higher then other bulkheads. Or it was just dry fitted on that photo, not glued?

Mark It does look that way I will have to go look now.

Floyd,
Looks pretty good. But re-look at the bulkheads. From the lower pic it looks like #4 and #9 are skewed slightly. I'm hoping it's camera distortion.

Ok Sports fans! its been a long a patient week. But every time I passed the bench this past week. I would pause and install a bulkhead. On my way to work and on my way home, often also just before bed. So here is the result -
A few comments -
Since the transom is exposed. I think I will make that out of boxwood using the sheet provided by Jeff.
I am interested in methods others have used to fair the bow blocks. These are tiny suckers!
If you look closely at the Macro picture below at the bow you will see that the glue is still drying on the final bulkhead.

It is in my build log, here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/6801-18th-century-longboat-by-mike-y-model-shipways-148/page-2#entry201485
I just made a jig that makes sure that
* keel is 90 degrees to the table
* bulkhead is 90 degrees to keel in all projections
That is enough to get a proper alignment. No need to mark bulkhead centers, they will automatically match if all angles are straight.
But, again, any kind of 90deg jig will work!
Or I misunderstood the question? What alingment is problematic? Do you have some photos illustrating it?
-
Nirvana reacted to fnkershner in 18th century Longboat by fnkershner (Floyd Kershner) - Model Shipways - 1:48
So Mike please share your solution. How did you make sure they were aligned with the keel? Ie the center of the bulkhead aligned with the keel?
-
Nirvana reacted to Mike Y in 18th century Longboat by fnkershner (Floyd Kershner) - Model Shipways - 1:48
There should be at least 10 right ways to align the bulkheads properly That is a good part of our hobby - each builder solves the challenges in a different way, very interesting to compare the solutions from different people!
