Hi Les

 

Regarding your question about the copper sheathing or plate to prevent chafing, here is a picture of the copper plate on my mast. The color varies from the area above where the boom jaws do not rub to where they do.

 

I would suspect that at the area where the gaff jaws are positioned most of the time that the area underneath would be shiny from the constant motion to port and starboard as the boat is under way.
