petehay Posted April 9, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 9, 2013 Here I go with my first build log. I am hoping that this little $9 POF kit will help me get my feet wet with planking. I've had trouble deciphering the instruction sheet and have complained about the poor quality photos included. I sent a copy of the instructions to MSW member Mahuna and he got me started. The original images are the kit "in the bag", an attempt to show the small size of the pieces, and a shot of the keel, transom, bow, and strip wood all stained with Minwax Jacobean stain. The instructions say you can soak the 1/16" strips in water for 15 minutes and they will be pliable enough to make the curve. My attempts at this just ended up with a lot of crimped wood. I resorted to the Midwest procedure of adding ammonia to the soaking water. I then used tiny clothes pins and medicine bottle caps to form the half circle. This was much better. My peterboro was built similarly and the ribs were installed after the canoe was removed from the formers. This made you be careful not to glue planks to the formers. I like this design better, where you can glue directly to the frames. she may be small but this is still a fascinating build. I wish I knew ME had these when I made my order. BTW - After watching your Swift build, I hope to enlist your help when I get to the actual planking. My knowledge is small, but I'll pass it on just as those that have helped me. I was showing Tammy your build log tonight and now she wants to build one. We may be luring her to the dark side . Actually she trained under a plastic surgeon and can tie better then most Doc's. I enjoy planking and the wood stuff and I can see that glint in her eyes when she looks at rigging. I just had her checking out Gil's amazing Vicky and you should of saw her. She also does chain maille jewelry so she likes that small tedious detail work. I definitely used 2 different techniques on the peterboro vs the Swift. The canoe was all CA glued and the Swift nearly all PVA. Using PVA requires more time and working but the results are better. The Swift allowed me to plank without stealers,which made the planking abit more difficult, as did using full length planks but it was more an excercise then anything. Could I do it and achieve satisfactory results. I started on these small ships to give me experience and I'm finding I'm beginning to love them as much as the tall ships. petehay Posted May 14, 2013 Author Share #26 Posted May 14, 2013 Playing with some false battens to try and get feel for the plank shapes. The framework is very fragile once you start sticking pins in it. The ribs started as 1/16th square but after fairing they are a bit smaller in places. I originally bought this kit for planking practice before I started my AL Virginia 1819 sloop but I might need to go the other way and plank the Virginia as practice for the lifeboat.
