Gratings:
Started glueing 1mm x 1mm strips of basswood on basswood squares. Once dry I will cut them in 3mm pieces. Then I will turn them on edge and glue the pieces together. Once dry, a frame will be made around it and installed on the decks. (I am using the example on pg 113, 114 of Ship Modeler's Shop Notes 1 from the NRG).

Next, slowly planking the deck. The wood strips that are located where the gratings go are 8mm and 9mm wide and all other strips are 6mm wide. The average length on all of them is 200mm. Planking the decks towards the edge of the inside of the hull wall is another exercise of patience. Unlike most ships the hull wall goes straight up but on the Fluit it bends inward. Lots of trail and error.

Last couple of days have been in the 70's F (20°C) (rare watm weather) so spend time cleaning up the flower beds and edible garden.

Finished the tiller and whipstaff. I will install this when I am ready to put the back deck in. I built it in a way that once installed it actually works.

Gratings have been glued together and need a good sanding. Also made the mast holders (don't know the name) and the railings with the reiling pillars.

Did some more Sculpey work. These two faces/heads need to be identical, but they are not. Will need to adjust this or leave it as is.

Can you silicon cast your sculpey work? Maybe not worth it in this case though.

That I have never done before but probably could.

Silicon casting is kind of costly and troublesome but would allow you to duplicate small parts accurately.

I am going to look into this and see what the costs are. Thank you for recommending this to me.

Always felt, planking a deck is a bit like mowing a lawn, easy, but very satisfying. Nice work on your decks and for the rest of the build it’s really come to fruition after your earlier struggles.

Today till Saturday on and off rain so no garden work. We get much needed rain whereas the South and the East of the US are floating away as they have too much rain.

Hello, I believe earlier we had talked about silicon casting as a means of reproducing parts accurately.  There is a better method, using blue stuff and epoxy resin; far cheaper and easier. I’ll link a video that shows how to do it. Hope you and others around here can benefit from it.

Now that there is less work in the garden I am continuing work on the Zeehaen and working on the windlass. After the 1st try, which went in the wood box the second attempt is much better. I use walnut as I have a lot of that and I like working with that wood.

This will be an 8 sided windlass. After I pm'd Ab Hoving on this he msgd., me that the Dutch in the 17th century used either a 6 or an 8 sided windlass. It all depended on how large the ship was and how much power you needed to haul material.

I have a jig to plane 4 sides to a 45 degree angle.

After sanding the windlass barrel, added the ratchet teeth for the pawl bit. Painted the holes matt black. Added the supporting posts on each side and installed the complete piece on the upper deck. Added the anchor rope and put the excess into the holes of the hatch cover.

I will also add the square poles that fit into the square holes.

For a change of pace looked through the 2 mast and accessories plans en ID'd all the parts that make up the different masts. Using the measurements from the index of the book and the plans and multiplied it by 2 figured out the sizes of it all. My model is twice the size. Plans are 1:75 and model is 1:37.5. It is going to be a rather large model. I knew it was going to be big, but not "that" big. I'm not even going to think about when she is finished and where I am going to put her.

Now that my wife has retired I have less time to work on the Fluit. Went on vacation to Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles. Snorkeling, sailing and checking out the island. There is only one shipwreck, the Dutch Brigantine Sirene from 1831.

We are doing a major house cleaning and donating many items to Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc.

I worked on the deadeyes and the necessary iron work that goes with it. The tape with the lines under the wale show the angle of the iron work.

2 small boats.
I have tried out several methods as well as what is described in the book of Mondfeld. I saw on the Dutch modelbouwforum.nl a method that I am using. It has been challenging. Lots of trail and errors.  I find it about as difficult as building the hull of the model itself.

My woodworkers club had reps. from Diablo and Freud. The Diablo rep showed us a new type of sanding technology. It is a net made of a ceramic blend and does not clog or tear. It lasts longer that regular sandpaper and made in Switzerland.
Personally, it works great, better than anything I have used before. The 220 grit I use feels like the 100 grit regular sandpaper.

Between the little vacations, the flower and the edible garden I find time to work on the small boats. I have the most difficulties with the smaller boat. The shape is a tough one. I decided to build both boats with 2 layers of planking as I made many mistakes planking the small one. (I don't know how people work in scales of 200 and up, mind boggling).

Both have the first layer of planking completed and have started on the second layer which should hide the mistakes I made on the smaller boat.

46459493_445FluitZeehaen2smallboats.thumb.jpg.71c0dbe2bc49d67d63ff175678600761.jpg

It is good that the smaller boat goes into the bigger boat and when I add 2 masts, 4 sails and the rigging you don't see much of the smaller boat. I am not sure if I am going to add the mast, sails and rigging to the boats. This may look like someone left a pile of junk on the deck and forgot to clean up.

What are the suggestions?

Out of curiosity, how long are these boats?  Also what is the thickness of the planks you're using?  It strikes me that the planks must be tapered and possibly spiled quite a bit to cover the surface.  Of course that's much more easily done on the second layer as you're doing.

I think some neatly stowed masts and gear would look good in the boats, though I imagine in actual sailing conditions the crew might cover the boats with a canvas tarp.

@Meriadoc Brandybuck

Large boat 18cm long x 6cm wide x 2cm high. Small boat 15cm long x 4.5cm wide x 2cm high.

Planking on small boat 3mm wide x 1mm thick. On large boat 4mm wide x 1mm thick.

The spilling is difficult on these boats. But I am trying that.

Covering the boats with canvas is an option but then everything is hidden and wasn't really done around that time.
