The ability to vary the speed of the drill is also an asset because different materials and grits often require different speeds to achieve the best surface and minimize wear on the abrasive A backerboard that carries the stock through the sander may give you better results for making very thin stock. However, beware of throwbacks! Fine sawdust can act as a lubricant on your fingers.
