I am building the cannons from an old Essex kit.  My guess is that the wood of the carriage has hardened with age and makes it impossible to nail into.   I am thinking that I might need to glue the brass stirrups to the carriage rather than nailing them on.  Wondering if you have any other suggestions?  Thanks......Rick

Chris is right, drill pilot holes a few thousandths smaller in diameter than the nails.  Epoxy will hold up, but nailing is cleaner and a better way to go based on my experience.  If the holes you drill are a tiny bit too large and the nails are not tight, a touch of Epoxy (or maybe CA)  when you insert them will serve

Have you considered replacing the strips with black cardstock and just using glue?

You can simulate fasteners with drops of glue that are painted.
