I am building the cannons from an old Essex kit.  My guess is that the wood of the carriage has hardened with age and makes it impossible to nail into.   I am thinking that I might need to glue the brass stirrups to the carriage rather than nailing them on.  Wondering if you have any other suggestions?  Thanks......Rick

Chris is right, drill pilot holes a few thousandths smaller in diameter than the nails.  Epoxy will hold up, but nailing is cleaner and a better way to go based on my experience.  If the holes you drill are a tiny bit too large and the nails are not tight, a touch of Epoxy (or maybe CA)  when you insert them will serve
