for the doors i have tried a few times to bend the 1x4 sapelly to get the curved top but its to sharp an angle and too small a piece

i ll give it a go again with the electric plank bender (soldering iron) but i am not sure if i stil lhave enough of the wood left

i tried with a solid door (2 strips of veneer glued to the metal door part) it needs a doorknob to finish it off

doesnt look too bad

Adrieke, doesnot look bad at all. Of Course you are designing now your own "Adrieking of the Mississippi". Maybe it is an idea to glue two or three thin horizontal strokes of dark wood spreaded vertically on the doors, than they are not looking that massive.

HI Bill

i like to keep the curve at the top. i got an idea in my head that i ll try out over the weekend

i have done a few more windows and dit a bit more planking

all holes are now almost to the correct size so only a bit of sanding should make the windows fit

post-622-0-15207200-1364991976_thumb.jpg

i did the same for the windows on one of the curved walls.

Adrieke, Wow, she is looking very nice! I love these old paddle wheels, and am seriously thinking of heading in that direction for the next build, and leave the rigging behind for a bit. I love the idea of lighting, it adds a great amount of ambiance to the model.

thanks for the nice comments geoffrey and robbyn :)

i choose this one because after my first small build i wanted to have a bit more wood working experience before starting on a bigger fully rigged ship

adding the lights was a bit of challenge after seeing carlosys model but its actualy not too difficult :)

thanks for the comments Wim,John,Sjors and Dcironfist :)

although i have run into a bit of a problem

if you look closely on the picture wiht the shutters you will notice that there is not enough room to put the shutter next to it

first i couldnt think why then it dawned on me that the orginal metal windows where smaller then the holes. about 0.6mm on all sides

that translates into 1.2 mmm. i made the windows to just fit the holes leaving only about 9 mm between windows with the shutters each being just over 5.1 mm.

the only option i got is to grind of about  0.6 mm of each shutter

Adrieke, sorry about that. How does it look if you overlap the window frame a bit with the shutter ? Grinding off 0.6 mm of each shutter will affect the appearence of the tapered side of the shutters for which reason two shutters can look as one (and there are a lot of shutters to grind off. . . :( ).

John

i have tought about that but i would need to cut into the frames because i have installed them sticking out about 1 mm.

my idea is to grind of the taperd side where it sits against the window.

Agree, that appears to be the best solution without affecting the "look" of the shutters.

Sorry to hear this Adrieke, and it's indeed the best option to grind the shutters a little bit.

To keep both sides of the shutters equal it's maybe better to grind both sides, it is an option.

Cheers,
Wim
