I think these were all wood, so brown may be a more appropriate color. If you don't have brown beads, I'd go with black.

No, certainly got no brown beads Tom

Got a lot of colours from when I used to make my own flies, but they are all mostly bright

I think black may be the best but if anyone has any thoughts please feel free to speak

I could put a bit of tape round to protect the wood

Two things.

When i was building the Corsair, I'll keep the beads just as it is in the manual.

Black and silver and it looks just great !

For shaping the mast, I also use the drill.

And a little tape on it and softly with sandpaper go over it .

Be careful with your hands, it's getting hot !

Loads of things to stick on

I think I am about half way through  :mellow: 

 

 

Cleats, rings, rope holding down the cupboard, the blocks for the steering gear   

Still got rings and stuff to put on the outside of the hull

I am still waiting for the chains as they were out of stock but CMB are expecting them in tomorrow   

I had a bit of a rest from sticking to wrap some rope round the bowsprit

 

 

I really didn't fancy the brass hoops they said to put on

On all the other masts they are rope so why brass on the bowsprit

If it's an awful mistake I just don't care   

The brass hoops would have been a ******* to do anyway   

 

Finally, my guitar kit is on the way

I won't be able to do to much when it arrives because I broke myself buying it   

But as soon as I have saved up for whatever finish I decide to give it

I have an idea what I want it to look like

I just need the experts to tell me how to do it

Now I have blisters…...

I want to use the electric drill but that won't work.

So I take the power sanding machine and that works

Hard at work today with mostly small stuff

Stuck some rings into the hull and then did something very fiddly

The steering gear (Helm)

 

 

That actually went a little better than expected

If anyone who doesn't know how to thread blocks   

I dab of CA on the tip and twist it fine   

Then use at least three hands and various tweezers   

 

I then went back to the bowsprit

 

 

I don't know if what I did was right, or if indeed there is a right way

I spot glued the deadheads and dead blocks to the mast and then wrapped rope over

I think it looks fairly neat and pleases me   

 

The cleats and chocks were of course easy

A drop of CA on some paper and a set of tweezers   

As you can see I also did the anchors and the boat/launch supports

 

Cripes 19.40 and there's golf on

Hard at work again

A rest from the ship 

I am doing the larger of the bowsprit yards 

Before

 

 

The drill is there to make sure the blocks holes are clear 

After

 

 

I have the loop of rope going between the two halves of the mast to attach this yard

I personally find this sort of work harder than ratlines by a long way 

Especially with the thick stubby fingers I possess 

Friends marvel at how I can do anything like this with my fingers

Well I got the bowsprit finished

 

 

I must get a sheet of something as a background   

The loops to hold the first yard weren't quite right so I will have to have a think about that

I know they are mostly held in place with the ropes though

The ribs and trucks went perfect and I think they look good left as they are

I did get rid of the one dark one I had in the middle there       

I think I am pretty tight for numbers with those

Back to the boat tomorrow to get a lot more fitted to her

I hope the nozzles come soon so I can get on with the Will

Bit more adding stuff today

Threading rope through and knotting in places that sometimes turn the air blue   

Fixing the anchors mainly and some rope I am not sure the use of   

 

 

Starting to look very busy at the front

Getting close to the deck being done, then it's on to the masts

Looking at others builds, especially Slogs, I do feel a little inadequate sometimes

Then I come back down to earth and say "****** it, what do I expect"

Been exercising my eyes and fingers today

 

 

They are not the easiest things to put together  :mellow: 

Got a few more to make yet   

I also did a couple of small jobs on the ship

I made a couple of spare masts to hold the launch

 

 

I think they look a bit heavy for the job, but they are the right size for the upper mast

I also put a handrail on the stairs over the steering gear

Not happy with the stain though

 

 

Obviously doesn't look as bad as the macro but I am not 100% happy

Isn't it amazing how quickly dust collects though   

And how bad it looks in a macro

Well Mick, exercising your fingers really payed off. Very nice.

 

The spare indeed look a bit heave for the job. It takes away the view of your launch and that is a pity.

Maybe you can use a smaller size?

And as for the stain, if you don't like it, maybe you can make it a little darker.

You are certainly moving along at a fair lick. That new links/chains you have look very nice and doing a great job on them.  My finger tips were numb after squeezing the links round the deadeyes  .

 

The 'business end' of your ship is looking great, probably one of my favourite areas on a sail ship I think.

Done a bit on the Endeavour today

Lashed the launch down, added the light at the back and some rope and chains the use of I haven't a clue   

 

 

Main thing I did today was make a start on the guitar

That will be a very off and on build as I need to save for the finishes, If you want to follow the blog the address is in my signature with all the others

According to the AOTS the chains should be attached to the rudder a bit higher than you have them, probably closer tot he step where your rudder changes colour from white to bare wood.

I will amend that   

I did have a problem fitting the rudder as I must have made a mistake somewhere very early on as the hole was blocked and I had to drill it out and the angle wasn't quite right    

Not a clue what I had done wrong

I did have a look at the photos and the plan and I couldn't see how I could have made the problem

But hey, when you try hard enough you can do anything

Hard at work today on the Endeavour and the guitar body

I finished the ropework at the bow and also fitted the flag mast but didn't glue it in place

 

 

The bowsprit is now firmly in place and does NOT want to be moved   

The last thing I did was put the chainplates and deadeyes on the port side 

 

 

Not the easiest thing is the world as the last time I did this I had made my own with twisted rope   

These did not go in easily as there was only the smallest of indentations to fit them in to

What I did was make big grooves on the strip that went over them so that it fitted well and secured everything

Then I stained the wood to match the Cherry strip on the hull

I will attach the chainplates to the hull when I have the shrouds on to get the angles right

I also made a start on the foremast top but that wasn't worth a photo yet   

I will finish that tomorrow and also give the guitar another gentle sanding

I have been working quite hard on the guitar the last couple of days

But I have also been doing boat bits

I have to admit I haven't finished the foremast top   

What I have been doing is destroying my fingers making up blocks

That is fixing the length or rope to a block

I need quite a few   

If anyone whats to know how I do it   

For speed I simply get the block on the surface in the correct position

Holes facing up and to my right as I am right handed

I get the length of rope you need in my left hand, folded in half with the end protruding in an O

I put a drop of CA on the furthest point of the O

I then put the O round the block, or deadeye with the glued rope in the groove

Right finger on the block, pull gently with the left

Make sure the rope is sticking to the correct part of the groove and that it is coming down the sides nicely

Pick up block with right hand and twist

Put a bit of glue on the rope below the block and twist, tightening the rope onto the block

Job done   

I would have made 3 or 4 in the timer it took to write this           

One thing

You can't afford to shake

I did quite a bit of work on the lower section of foremast

 

 

There are a few more blocks to be fitted above the top and then she is done and I can start on the middle section

I need to rope some more blocks first though

Aren't there a lot   

 

Also been hard at work on the guitar which is getting close to the painting stage

Here is what the body looks like

 

 

No point showing the neck as it is all masked up to keep stuff off the fretboard

She's not looking too bad though

I cannot decide whether to mist a translucent coat of green over the maple front or leave it clear coated natural
