Thanks a lot

The blocks that are on there now wer fixed to the crosstree before assembly

I have got a few eye bolts to fit before it is finished but the plans showed the blocks attached direct to the crosstrees

It's for me easier to attach them.

But your way is also good and I'm to late for that.

My vote would be for a green guitar top.  PRS did a beautiful green quilted maple top as part of there range which I fell in love with.  Are you going to use traditional aniline dyes for staining your guitar?

And I want a totally different finish

That sits on a black base to give the effect

I am hoping to get a bit of a sunburst effect by just coming round onto the top with a tiny misting line of the dark paint and also taking it over the front bevelled edge

Ok questions please people

Couple of things on the plans

One I am fairly sure of the other not   

 

 

Now I am pretty certain that this is showing two blocks joined together 

A D is a 4mm single block and am M is a 5mm one

On the side photo they are still shown joined

I am presuming I am right, am I ?????

There are a few of these dotted over the masts

What are they for???

 

 

Now this one I am not sure about at all

Is it a 1mm slot??

Is it two 1mm holes and if so are they joined with a groove ???

And what is it for anyway ????

Yes, the first picture is two blocks stropped together. Since they are on the mast cap, one of the two is for the yard lifts and the other could be for the sheet or tack of the sail above.

 

The second picture is a sheave in the mast, like what was one the cat heads. I believe this was used for raising and lowering the topmast. This can be simulated with two holes and a slot, which is how I would do so you don't weaken the mast too much.

 

Hope this helps and someone please correct me if I am wrong.

The first one is a violin block which is a lift for the main yard not two blocks joined, the second is the sheeve which is used with a tackle to pull the upper mast up into position and then a fid (a small wooden chock) is placed through a hole in the bottom of the upper mast which sits across the cross trees to hold it in place and the tackle is removed.

These masta and yards look like they will be the most complicated parts of the build

I have the same on my masts , those sheeves…..

I try to make them on a spare part of dowel that I have left, and it not works….

I try the milling machine and that also don't work.

So, no sheeves on my mast then….

I think when I go further, I damage the mast and that is not a thing that i want to.

Greg and Tom answered your questions but might add that probably easier to fake the mast sheaves with a couple of holes and a groove.  I did 0.3mm holes and groove in the 2mm ensign staff and today did 1mm holes in the cat-heads.

 

Once you drill the holes use a steel rule and a new No.11 blade with a sharp point to score a line between the outside edge of the holes, joining the two.  Doesn't have to be deep then use the point of the blade to pick out the material between the scribe marks.  For the 1mm holes I also used the point of the drill at a shallow angle to 'scrap' up and down the groove by hand to clean the edges.  Didn't with the 0.3mm for fear of breaking it.

I am getting quite close to painting but the problem is I have to save up for it as I busted myself buying the kit

Hi all

Just to let you know I have been busy busy

I have spent most of the day making these  :mellow:

 

 

They seem to take forever

Half the time is spent sanding CA glue off the fingers 

I have nearly finished the foremast then I have the three yards to make and they are nearly as complicated as the masts 

 

Been hard at work on the guitar

The photo won't look much different from the other one to the uninitiated 

 

 

Can see that the constant laquer/sanding had brought out some darker areas

Also if you compare this to the other photo you will see that this one is much much smoother

When the front is perfect I have the sides and back to prepare but they won't take long as the Basswood is much easier to work on

But it didn't work at all.

So I leave it to the two holes.

Besides that, I paint that part black, so you don't see it at all…..

It is certainly a striking colour and I hope the translucent candy apple on the front will compliment it

They do a translucent candy apple green for the airbrush so I am hoping that will make my life a lot easier

 

Busy again today as well

Finished the foremast

 

 

Very happy with how it went together

It wasn't easy though and I will sit down and study the plans to see if there is an easier way

 

I am now working on the first yard for the foremast

 

 

Seems almost as complicated as the mast with all the stirrups, foot ropes, booms and I don't know what else 

The work after the hull is built and finished is, I think, the most difficult and I hope rewarding part of the build 

I am getting Sjors in as soon as I open the bag containing the ropes

Yes, two more masts to go, eight yards and I think it's called a gaff

I make a batch of blocks every now and then trying to remember to run a drill through all the holes

I bet when I come to threading the cotton through some will be blocked

You make everything at one I see….

 

I don't do that.

I finish first all the lower part of the masts with all the holes and blocks.

Then I do the shrouds and ratlines.

After that I go to the next part of the mast and finish that.

Then I make the yards and spars.

When I do that all together I think that I not know where everything goes anymore or I place the wrong yards at the wrong place….

And on the drawings I mark all the things I have done with a yellow marker.

So I can see if everything is there and don't forget things.

It's funny to see that everyone has his own way of building.

But you have to do what works for you !

Just to show one of these violin blocks I am making here is a photo

 

 

Whether I am making it right I don't know

I glue the 4mm to a loop then put a spot of glue on the top of the 5mm and glue it to the 4mm

then wind around

I did try crossing the cotton under the 4mm but I didn't like the way it looked

It then looked very much like two blocks 'tied' together

Were the violin blocks one piece IRL?????

The first ones I made were more like the one at the top

They did not look as good though

 

I finished the first foremast yard

 

 

It took me a full day as I could not do too much before resting the fingers

I had to make most of the blocks as well

I would have to say that so far this has been the most difficult part of the build

It still needs the fancy bit making to go round the mast and hold it in place   

At least the next one is a lot more simple

Had a fantastic night at the theatre last night with The Admiral

Solid Gold Sixties 50th Anniversary

Celebrating 1963

I was 13 at the time but the music was something else

Some of you may not remember some of these groups but we saw.  The Fortunes, The Searchers, Brian Poole and Chip Hawkes (Chesneys father) from the Tremeloes, P J Proby and headlining Gerry and the Pacemakers

Absolutely fantastic

 

I was so up I managed a bit of work today and finished the Foremast yards 

 

 

Completely done now and ready to fit

I have also made a start on the main mast making the top and shaping the lower mast

 

I get the paint for the guitar Monday I hope and then I will be concentrating on that for a bit

Once I actually start painting it shouldn't take long as the paint and laquer system is made to work together and coats can be laid down 15 minutes apart

The guitar is about ready for painting

Took a lot of work but I think I am there

It is difficult to tell without laying a coat of paint on there

Being lazy   

Did a bit of work on the lower mainmast

Stuck some stuff on it

I think it actually has less bits on it than the foremast   

I was thinking of doing the wooldings but that went up in smoke when I decided to prepare the guitar body for painting by screwing a length of wood on it to be able to handle it and hang it

I also made sure my airbrush was clean

So it is depending if the guitar paint arrives or not what happens tomorrow

I have done a bit more today

Maybe not as much as I would have as the guitar paint arrived and I did a test on some wood I had already coated with the Ronseal that was on the guitar

 

 

I put the marker lines on to see what cover there would be and as you can see there was very little

That was 5 or 6 passes with the airbrush

 

On the ship I have almost finished the lower part of the mainmast

It's amazing how much less there is on it compared to the foremast

Tomorrow I am going to start painting the neck on the guitar and also possibly the body front

To keep you up to date, I started painting the guitar today

I started with the neck and that went very well, just how i wanted it

 

 

Then full of confidence I started on the body front

That didn't go so well   

I got some ripples

I think it was a combination of too many passes in a coat and too much air pressure

That meant the paint was a bit too deep and the air blew it up into ripples

 

I will have to smooth that off now and have another go
