Hello Harshil,

I just read through your superb log and will follow along to completion.  I have gotten plenty of ideas that I may borrow as I progress farther along in my build of the Confederacy.  Your craftsmanship and attention to detail is up there with the best.

Hello all, and happy new year! It has been a while since my last update. I hadn’t worked on the model for nearly three years, as I relocated to Australia and was busy settling in. I’m happy to say that I’m now in a position to continue the build and have even set up a dedicated room as a modelling workshop.

Given the long break, I went back through my build log to remind myself where I had left off. I was surprised by how much progress I had made, and I initially thought it might be difficult to get back into the groove. To make the transition back to model building a bit easier, I decided to start with the ladders (since they will mostly be hidden anyways).

To begin, I cut grooves for the steps using a chisel and then rounded off the forward-facing edges of each step. The steps were glued into position using a square. The photos below show this stage of the process.

For the ladders to fit properly into the companionway, I needed to trim the bottom of each ladder so that the steps sat parallel to the decking. Once adjusted, I glued the ladders onto the coamings, making sure the bases sat neatly and securely.

Below are photos of the result. Note that the coamings, gratings, and the ladder base have not yet been glued in place yet. There’s no specific reason for this, other than keeping them removable in case it proves useful later on.

Some other pending items that are at the back of my mind are:

1) How best to protect the printed tiles in the cabin. I am considering using a self-adhesive clear film (similar to a book cover protector) and cutting it to shape to fit the tiles. Open to other suggestions for this.

2) Deciding whether to carve the scrollwork and figures myself or use the castings for the stern. I think I may be biting off more than I can chew with the carvings and will likely end up using the castings.

3) Determining the right time to start working on the rudder. For now, I am planning to work on the gun carriages before returning to the instruction manual and continuing with the remaining bits and pieces that I didn’t get to earlier.

As mentioned before in my build log, I am always open to suggestions and constructive feedback :)

Hello Harshil,

as always very good work!

The last picture shows the ladder ending upwards towards the grating as it is shown in the instructions. Regarding this detail, I thought by myself that this would have meant that every man going down or coming up the ladder had to step - or run in case of haste - over the grating. What when the grating was put aside for any reason? So I decided to glue the ladder showing forward instead of aft.

Perhaps I am totally wrong.....

Greetings Werner
