Golden Hind by Daniel Filipe - Occre - 1:85

Good evening everyone, this is going to be my second build. The package arrived today.

While i was waiting for the model i did a basic research about the Golden Hind and some plans showed up.

What do you think about this deck?

Having cannons on the upper deck.. like HMS Revenge..

In my opinion, I really like the ideia of having cannons on the upper deck.

That’s why I’m requesting your opinion on this subject. 🙏🏻

If we consider the ship without that deck, its guns are on its only deck, which seems right. The ship would certainy not be lower if it had another deck above the gun deck.

 

Small ships often had just one deck, and the temptation to arm the highest deck seems to always have been very strong, so I see no reason to expect Golden Hinds highest deck was not armed.

When it came out this must have been a fantastic book.
I have this book too. But with the current information available, this book is no longer recommended ( in my opinion)

 

 

Cannons on the main deck are possible. But only light calibers on this relatively small ship

Thank you so much, i have now a better perception about this. It makes sense when it comes to the stability and center of gravity. 
Maybe tonight I’ll start de construction 😋

It is going to be a challenge because i have some future upgrades to make on the ship.

The Occre brand tells me to glue the cannons that come in the box, directly on the wood. I really don’t like to see that on a model.

I think it’s possible, creating some supports inside, painting black to give that darkness.. 

I think I’ve seen a post here on the forum but can’t find one talking about that.

Replacing the metal doors for wood ones, placing some rope on the gun ports, rope for the small cannons on the upper deck, (just four).

Glued the frames and started sanding the two small supports at the bow.

It will be more easy when planking the strips.

I must leave 4mm for the keel. On the Polaris i sanded to much and now I want to prevent that 😅

Good evening,

Before starting planking the deck, i need some advices about the size of the wood strips. 
I think they are too big comparing with the scale.

What would you do in this type of situation?

What are the dimensions of the planks?

The width of the strips.

For me, the width of the strips should be smaller. 
They have 5mm i think.

5mm on this scale is wide.

But there are no strict rules

For deck planking in this era.

Doing some work before gluing anything. Reduced the strips from 5 to 4mm. Now I like it. Having space for a 10th wood strip instead of 9. 🥳
